IDK what I've been doing not owning a Rice Cooker * 2
    #26552953 - 03/23/20 11:47 AM (3 years, 10 months ago)

Since I expect to eat a lot of rice in the foreseeable future, I decided to get me a Rice Cooker.

If you don't know it: Its a cheap appliance, $20 or so, you throw in your rice, seasoning and water in the bottom pot, put on the steamer pot, put the veggies and fish etc in that, the lid on top..

First it goes in cooking mode, then automatically to warming mode for up to 12 hours.

Basically you stuff your ingredients in it, slap it together and switch it on, then later you have a ready cooked meal, just needs a stir and some soy sauce

It comes out perfect if you stick to the correct proportions and waiting period, or longer.

What have I been doing for 47 years, boiling the rice then steaming it wrapped in a towel while steaming the veg and fish meticulously

If you're one of the many Shroomerites who helped themselves to a big bag of rice, do yourself a big favor and get a $20 rice cooker. You can just skip cooking rice dishes, or devote all your attention to another aspect of the meal while your rice gets cooked perfect to a T and your veggies steamed too.

I think I have a rice cooker somewhere, but its huge, I had a smaller one for just doing like a cup, but it broke, I just use my instant pot, 3 minutes at pressure with 10 minutes natural release yields perfect rice, never tried putting a rack in at the same time to steam veggies on top though, it might work, but I didnt buy any fresh veggies, I can just heat my can of veggies on the stove while the rice takes 13 minutes to cook

If you do a lot at once you can just freeze the rest, some types of rice are really good frozen and reheated. Others can be kept in the fridge for days and used for stir frys and fried rices

I love my rice cooker, don't use the veggie tray much though because I'm not a huge fan of steamed veggies

I dont really eat rice being low-carb and all, but my partner does, and she lets the pan overflow every fucking time

There is this congealed mess on the stove at least three times a week

Damn mine doesn't have the upper steamer pot, it just does rice, I usually just fry up veggies with some meat but that's a cool idea.

Going to try cooking raw chicken in the steamer pot of my rice cooker at some point this week, will use a heartier brown rice with a longer cook time so it'll cook through. I bet the chicken juice falling down into the rice bowl will make it pretty tasty. The chicken itself might lack some flavor from not being browned first, but nothing that hot sauce can't fix.

I'm against microwaving food, but in case of contingency it it prudent to have one.

Yup, and the gas for it, obviously.

I've got one of those MSR Dragonfly stoves that runs on anything you put in it. Diesel, gasoline, kerosene, jet fuel....

Of course it prefers white fuel but it comes in handy when the power goes out. I used the shit out of it when our power was out for two weeks.

I wish I had two of them.

Best appliance i've ever bought is a small counter top oven. Perfect for pizzas, reheating, toast, baking, everything, so much less fuss than waiting for a larger oven to preheat etc. Use it almost every day.

Never understood rice cookers though, but I am intrigued. Usually I buy those little rice packets that you stick in the microwave for 90 seconds...

Yes! Those counter top ovens are boss. Some are even convection "ovens" and work really well.
