Depends. Things are changing very very rapidly. They just started putting up some of those drive through testing centers and I honestly don't know how things are done there, but I suspect it's part of the reason for the increased case # despite the fact that we aren't seeing much of an increase in hospitalizations. The hospital admission criteria the triage nurses are using RN to admit suspect COVID patients is [fever > 100.4, dyspnea, O2sat < 95 in healthy patients or < 90 in patients with chronic airway diseases, persistent cough] possible GI and URI symptoms are considered as well. If you state you've traveled to an area known to have COVID-19 and you present with those criteria, you'll get tested for it STAT. Otherwise yeah they will do a ruleout for flu and such first.  If you don't meet those criteria and you state that you've been in direct contact with someone known to have COVID-19, they'll send you home and tell you to stay there and away from that person for a week or two and see if you develop symptoms and come back for a test if you do.

Just a quick glance at these numbers from yesterday, and not doing the math on each one; but Florida and Louisiana seem to have the highest growth rates in the country. Two of the most tropical and humid states.

The louisiana case is interesting. In florida I think it's due to social factors. It's a nationwide running joke that people in florida are pretty stupid, and a lot of them are very old. I know that's not a scientific analysis by any means, I'm mostly just trying to explain the disparity between what I'm hearing on the news and what I'm seeing at work. The ER is ominously quiet these days as many people are avoiding it for things they'd normally come for b/c they think they'll catch COVID there. A lot of nurses are calling it "the calm before the storm", but I just... remain unconvinced that things are ever going to play out as severely here as they have been elsewhere. This coming from a person who was about to shit his pants over this thing last week. And frankly, if I were living in new york, I would be shitting my pants. So maybe I will be in a few weeks, but...

10,000 new cases in the US yesterday. 7,000 today and it’s only noon.

This country’s response with all the time we have had is an utter disaster.

It’s riduculous information. Like your entire respiratory tract is not connected to itself. You get infected in the nose and you breathe through your nose it’s in your lungs. Stop spreading bogus information from your secret highly connected medical geniuses.

Not necessarily. Seems a lot of folks are experiencing nothing but loss of taste and smell from this virus but never have other symptoms which suggests it is lodging in the nasopharynx and not progressing further down the resp. tract

I dunno about that.  Seems to be spreading just fine here in Florida.  The hottest most humid state in the nation.

I could swear that someone told me the other day that they were having more severe cases in the South and there was correlation between hot areas and severity. Maybe humidity? if I'm not used to high humidity, just being healthy in Florida - at least during the summer is a shock to my system, and I've got good lungs(for now)?

That said, the amount of misinformation floating around is mind boggling. I have genuinely no idea what's going on. All I know is that so far about 10% of cases here in PA have required hospitalization - which is a number I'm not too keen to tangle with.

Its not surprising most of the infections originate in the upper respiratory tract. It’s actually very hard to get infectious agents deep into the lungs. Which is why it takes days to weeks to deveop pneumonia.

Let’s remember that Trees theory is that if you get infected in the upper respiratory tract first it will protect you from getting pneumonia. That is totally bogus.

When they say "require hospitalization" you have to take that with a huge grain of salt. What sort of case "requires" hospitalization is totally dependent on the circumstances and just... whoever is calling the shots...

I'm betting the admission criteria in New york is stricter than ours, and that it's more lax than ours in more rural areas. When they say a case "requires" hospitalization, that is just a reflection of the rate at which people are actually being hospitalized, not a reflection of the rate of people who would have died if they had not been hospitalized. Seriously though I'm just struggling to understand why things don't seem to be panning out as badly here in Houston despite the fact that we are a massive travel and import/export hub.

I see no appreciable upturn due to increased testing, nor downturn due to social distancing. At best we are simply treading water

So what happens is the virus often enters through the nostrils and gets lodged in the mucous/cilia in the nasopharynx. The dendritic cells stimulate the adaptive immune response. In certain healthy people this may happen quickly enough that the virus never progresses further than the nasopharynx. There are so many factors to go into this. First is how and how much of the virus got into your body in the first place.

Also the antibodies that people are carrying around to other coronavirus spike proteins appear to be mitigating the severity of infection. I have to admit that I have misspoken on this account before, claiming that nobody could possibly be immune to COVID19 without having already been infected with. Some people may have enough other coronavirus antibodies to handle the job.

If I'm looking at Spain's numbers correctly, it looks like for those aged 20-40, 14-20% of those who get COVID require hospitalization. The death rate for that age group is pretty low, .2-.4% (so far), but how much would that increase if hospitals are over-run and quality of care drastically decreases?

Close to 1 in 5 being hospitalized is no small number, if you're requiring hospitalization that will not be a fun experience at all

Yeah I was reading your criteria for hospitalization up the thread, and it did make me a feel a bit better. In my mind for a little while hospitalization conjured up some pretty gruesome images in my head.

..I really don't want to be put on a ventilator like ever if I can help it :uhoh:

I imagine density in NYC is a huge factor. Houston is a huge and massive hub, but people aren't constantly on top of each other like they are in NYC - very few other cities in the country even come remotely close. Vast swaths of the population don't depend solely on public transportation as a way to get around, and I'm assuming things, in general, are just a bit more spread out, luckily.

The death rate for the flu in that age group is infinitesimally tiny. Like .01%

Just your daily reminder thatnthis isn’t the flu

Hah, classic example of "koods assumes the dumbest possible interpretation of what I said". I said that pre-lung infection is better than direct lung infection.

Your rebuttal skills are bogus

That's a good point that I hadn't thought of, but to be fair, a LOT of cruise lines dock at the Port of Galveston. Additionally we have the biggest import/export hub in the country and we're #2 after toronto for most diverse immigrant population in north america. Houston is a major relay for international flights. So yeah
