Tiny contam in first tub. Not sure what to do.
    #26551094 - 03/22/20 02:26 PM (3 years, 10 months ago)

Just spotted this tiny greenish spot. Tub is about 8 days old I expect pins any day now. Should I cut it out? Leave it be? Burn the house down? I have another tub going next to it and a 3rd starting tonight.  Thanks!

It is mould, getting it this early spells disaster

You can cut it out but make sure it's mould and not bruising

I think it’s bruising but the myc doesn’t look healthy overall.

How can I make sure it’s mold?

Cut it out more mold will follow. Looks like bruising to me. Doesn't look raised or soorelated

I’m hoping it’s bruising. It’s very tiny and it does look kind of blue to me now that I’m staring at it more. The pic is super close up. It’s smaller than an inoculation loop and hasn’t gotten bigger all day. I’ll see how it progresses overnight.

Thank you all for the replies!

It looks like bruising to me, keep an eye on it you will know very soon if it expands or stays the same

Looks like bruising to me, kinda hard to tell in that pic. That tub doesnt look very healthy to me anyways tho. Looks kinda dry. I see spots on the wall from died water, the coir looks like its dried out in spots, and bruising and the yellowing/oranging going on in spots could definitely be caused by drying out.

Have you got the lid on? Has it been on during colonization?

Yeah I’ve had the lid on upside down. I’ve struggled with surface drying out. I’m misting 2-3 times per day but there are spots that seem to dry out very fast.

Close the lod and turn it when it starts pinning.  Give it a good soaking first though.  Opening the box 3 times a day will give it enough FAE and turning it when it starts pinning will help get you a decent pinset

Ok thank you! It actually just started to pin but I started a new tub last night and will have the lid completely closed for that one and follow your advice.

The blue/green spot has not grown at all in a day so I believe it is bruising from being too dry. Learning a lot from you guys!

Definitely add a top layer of coir after mixing the spawn. I’ve got super low humidity and was having insane problems with my surface drying out following the teks and things other people do. Top layer was seriously a miracle for me.

If your surface is drying out constantly then you’ll probably get enough air with the lid snapped on the tub unless it’s got a rubber seal. It took me a while but I eventually figured out with my low RH a top layer and keeping the lid snapped on shoeboxes kept it perfect until the shrooms got tall enough to dub tub.

A casing layer definitely helps the microclimate at the mycellium level. Keeps the surface moist and the humidity up.

Ive run tubs all kinds of ways. Layering spawn and sub like a multi layer cake, mixing spawn and sub with and without casing layer, mixing spawn and sub and adding an extra quart of spawn on top as a casing. They all have advantages/disadvantages.

Uncased can dry out on top depending on the RH outside the tub, how much air is exchanging, how tight of a seal you have, etc. If I see my tubs drying on top before its pinning, but after its all colonized, I just use a spray bottle that makes a fine mist and give it a good spray. That tub is fairly dry, so you might have to spray heavier to get it rehydrated on top. After that you wanna have a thin layer of really fine water droplets on the surface for evaporation. Water evaporating off the surface helps trigger pinning.

Dont let the next one dry out :super:

Great tips everyone! Thank you so much! I’m starting 10 more jars tonight. Lots of opportunity to experiment with these suggestions. I’ll try tub closed on the one I just started and a casing layer on the next one 👍

Just wanted to update everyone. Was able to harvest last night and wound up with 42g dry. New tub is still looking great with lid down. Tiny water droplets across the mycelium and coir looks damp but no puddles. Excited to see how that one turns out.
