You don't need iso, it is just perferred. You can use soapy water if you want.
Don't know what Star is, link ingredients.

thanks for the reply!
I'm shifting away from iso, but find iso has some advantages in some cases since it evaporates quickly and leaves no residue behind.
star san is acid based - used primarily by home brewers. After diluting it, it works out to be less expensive than iso... and it's still available at the moment as the world is going into corona lockdown. https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00IA1Z4UW?tag=duc12-20&linkCode=osi&th=1&psc=1

Oh yeah. That stuff. I don't think you should use it because it will etch plastics. So if your spraying your SAB or plates it will make tiny cracks in the plastic that will allow shit to take hold.
Also it is a sanitizer not a sterilizer, but i guess so is ISO.

thanks Sockadin, good to know about the reaction to plastics. Soapy water or stricter procedures may be the answer for me.
Is there something that you could just spray on that would be a sterilizer? haha, that would be awesome

I used this stuff all the time sanitizing my 55 gallon stainless steel drum back when I was making moonshine. Dunno how would work for mushroom purposes.

Sounds weird, maybe its just my luck, but I have been using lysol disinfectant on my gloves and when wiping down jars and agar plates. Have not had issues yet

Well it is a acid and acid does etch but I have seen no visible damage to any plastics I use it on. I have also used it inside my SAB just to get rid of the leftover I had already mixed it up didn't notice any effect positive or negative just wet walls in a SAB. Star San almost seems like it evaporates slower than most other liquids though the suds or bubbles it makes last forever lmao. At least it seems like they do.
