Apocalypse Cultivation
    #26549993 - 03/21/20 11:46 PM (3 years, 10 months ago)

Hello! Old member lost previous login.

Im partial to coir and WBS, however.... im curious. If we assume society collapses (no i dont think corona alone will do this but it brings up the possibility that multiple issues affect regions and create an "every man for himself" scenario.

Assuming long term failure of society what is your process of producing edible mushrooms? I was thinking of using a substrate sawdust/woodchips as producing woodchips is very possible.

If reduced to foraging/limited materials what would you use to produce edible mushrooms? (also interested in psychedelic but mainly edible varieties)

I think it depends on the species you intend to grow. I do know oysters are similar to doing cubes. Shiitake requires woodchips, etc. RR has videos using laundry baskets and straw logs. Check out his videos!

Mulch and leftover newspaper if they even have any left anymore. And reuse old plastic grocery bags for fruiting oysters.

There's a cool video on YouTube of a mushroom farm that these dudes run
using basically nothing. Definitely nothing high tek they keep mycelium
alive on cotton balls in plastic bottles, they reuse shopping bags to
hold substrate, starting fires under 50 gal drums with make shift hoses
going to other old rusty drums with just small holes and rocks on the
lids to make a 2psi steam sterilizer kinda things. It's nuts! Broken down
shack in the woods as a fruiting area they say they produce 500 bags a day
or something like that

I would inoculate logs with wild mycelium of wood loving species that I find around
and hope it works. Find an oyster cluster and stuff a few whole fruits into
a hole I drill/cut out of the center of a dry log then pray to the mushroom gods for food haha.

Gonna be too busy doin other stuff to survive, at least at first, to dedicate
time to attempting a sterilized grow.

Vegetarian animal poop and straw. Straw is any dried grass stalk.

I'm pretty sure each of us will be "the shaman" in our roving apocalypse gang.
I've been thinking about this, too.

Cool video run for. Thanks!

I love how they are recycling banana waste, coffee. I use newspaper, mulch, coffee and recycled things.

Imagine what those people from that old video can do now.

I need to fire up some oysters. One of the coolest oyster farms I’ve seen is from a guy who gets the leftover cotton waste from cotton farms. And pretty much gets all his is grate for free: he also has an 18 wheeler size autocleave.

Yeah seeing how these farms work with simplicity and without lots of technology
really helps to wrap your head around how it's possible to let the fungus
be it's strong natural self and just plain help it grow. Definitely good
food for thought.
