so i started this tray of vegetables 2 weeks ago with then intent of building a garden and transplanting them. well this weekend, a cold snap rolled thru and its about 40F with misty rain. i wouldnt mind getting out and finishing the garden but i dont wanna do the transplants and the plants die due to cold. any suggestions? i feel i need to do something other than leave them in the tray.

You could plant them in pots for the meantime so that they don't get rootbound.

You could make a raised bed and cover it with something translucent plus hay to keep some heat in there. Some Brassica sprouts survive in 40F anyways, they just need some support against the wind and animals. If you have a few squash sprouts or other things that really need it hot just repot those and keep them indoors.

i was planning on a raised bed, maybe possibly do a mini greenhouse idea?

I personally would just re-pot them all until you can put them out. It's a lot of work, but it will be worth it in the end. Their health and vigor will start to diminish, the longer you leave them all in a tangled mess like that. I lost lots of plants doing just what you did by starting too early. As a matter of fact, I had that same situation going, until I painstakingly re-poted them all in individual pots. I also bought a cheap greenhouse to house them in until it gets warm enough to put them all in the ground. I actually manged to get most of the cold hardy stuff in the ground already, and it's all been there since the end of January. This also depends on your climate too.

You could try a temporary cold frame/hoop house setup if you're okay putting a decent amount of effort into it. It'd also depend on where you're planting them and how they're arranged.

Beans often aren't happy getting transplanted, and like hot temps. Plant a few bean seeds directly in the garden when you're planting the potted plants as a backup.

Lots of time to resow still. I only have a few seeds started; most are sown in April and transplanted late April to May. Zone 6 though.

I'm in zone 7, and you can keep plants out all the way until November here, and sometimes even December.
An unheated greenhouse will extend your season almost indefinitely, depending on what you're growing.
I started all my cool weather plants, greens, garlic, kale, cilantro, etc, all the way back in December indoors, and then I moved them out to the greenhouse. I put most everything in the ground in late January, and I have had a nearly full garden ever since. It even got down into the 20's some nights, and it didn't even phase any of my plants. One night it got 14, and it froze all my plants solid, especially the container grown plants inside the greenhouse, and as soon as the sun came out, and the pots thawed, they all survived.
Of course you can't do this with warm weather plants, but lots of greens, and stuff will grow outdoors all year round here, so I assume zone 6 wouldn't be too much different.
I'd at least start up a bunch of cool weather plants, and see what you can get

I think I'm in the colder half of Z6! I find that when I start seeds in March the plants get root bound in their pots so take a long time to bounce back after planting out. I've done some side by side plantings of seeds and potted plants and if the potted plants are put out early or are root bound, the direct seeded plants always catch up. So I'm going more and more to direct seeding as it's way less work than starting seeds indoors. My plants get hit by late frosts when planted out in March / early April; usually they survive but have to regrow from the roots so are delayed anyway. I get super impatient to start each spring... But have learned the hard way to wait. It may also be that the last few years have been colder than usual. A hoophouse would be awesome! Wish I had room for one.

I see.
Well, you can always just get a cheap greenhouse like mine.
It was only $50 bucks, and it's well worth it to be able to have seedling going outdoors a month or two earlier

This is the one I got.
You can actually walk inside it and move around a bit too.
It was only a little over $fifty bucks at Walmart.com.
Just by having this, it extended my growing season by two or more months, and it's had plants out in it since January.
