Hello! Old member lost previous login.
Im partial to coir and WBS, however.... im curious. If we assume society collapses (no i dont think corona alone will do this but it brings up the possibility that multiple issues affect regions and create an "every man for himself" scenario.
Assuming long term failure of society what is your process of producing edible mushrooms? I was thinking of using a substrate sawdust/woodchips as producing woodchips is very possible.
If reduced to foraging/limited materials what would you use to produce edible mushrooms? (also interested in psychedelic but mainly edible varieties)

I think it depends on the species you intend to grow. I do know oysters are similar to doing cubes. Shiitake requires woodchips, etc. RR has videos using laundry baskets and straw logs. Check out his videos!

Mulch and leftover newspaper if they even have any left anymore. And reuse old plastic grocery bags for fruiting oysters.

There's a cool video on YouTube of a mushroom farm that these dudes run using basically nothing. Definitely nothing high tek they keep mycelium alive on cotton balls in plastic bottles, they reuse shopping bags to hold substrate, starting fires under 50 gal drums with make shift hoses going to other old rusty drums with just small holes and rocks on the lids to make a 2psi steam sterilizer kinda things. It's nuts! Broken down shack in the woods as a fruiting area they say they produce 500 bags a day or something like that

I would inoculate logs with wild mycelium of wood loving species that I find around and hope it works. Find an oyster cluster and stuff a few whole fruits into a hole I drill/cut out of the center of a dry log then pray to the mushroom gods for food haha.
Gonna be too busy doin other stuff to survive, at least at first, to dedicate time to attempting a sterilized grow.

I'm pretty sure each of us will be "the shaman" in our roving apocalypse gang. I've been thinking about this, too.

Cool video run for. Thanks!
I love how they are recycling banana waste, coffee. I use newspaper, mulch, coffee and recycled things.
Imagine what those people from that old video can do now.
I need to fire up some oysters. One of the coolest oyster farms I’ve seen is from a guy who gets the leftover cotton waste from cotton farms. And pretty much gets all his is grate for free: he also has an 18 wheeler size autocleave.

Yeah seeing how these farms work with simplicity and without lots of technology really helps to wrap your head around how it's possible to let the fungus be it's strong natural self and just plain help it grow. Definitely good food for thought.

Every day I go out there and groan and bitch my way through a wood-splitting session or drop some trees and somewhere throughout it clicks in my head how lucky I am to have all the chips and dust I could possibly use, and I brighten up considerably...
Can't wait to delve into oysters again and really get something kicking when the temps warm up here. Keeping them from critters without enough bins= the current challenge. Gonna be running some agaricus soon and luckily we have plenty of friendly horse owners nearby. Wild straw substitues everywhere. Moose have been dropping by every other day or so now as well so am close to starting my moose poop experiments (not with edibles though). There are so many raw materials to be used... Wanted to use some of these spruce-dominant chips to start some wine caps but due to coronavirus I won't be able to go to Anchorage to pick up the spawn i saw on CL. So angery... Guess I'll have to start my apocalype growing after the apocalypse. Definately looks possible I'll be finding alternatives to toilet paper before I worry about running out of ways to cultivate mush. Back on point though... it's like... a super great hobby for barebones times if you have a few key items. I've actually been wrapping my mind around doing a sort-of-for-laughs tek for people who want to grow mushrooms in Alaska using like an old cast iron pan under the woodstove to dry moose turds, using fireweed stalks instead off straw, growing them in a coffee can, etc lol. It's a lot of fun to think about the different ways we can improvise and adapt.

I just fired up a dry ass crispy plate of 3 plus year old oysters to celebrate the apocalypse: I’ll probably grow on yard mulch collected and use old grocery bags for spawn bags.

I've read you can keep cultures alive for years by just throwing some agar wedges into a jar of sterilized water to float. Anyone care to enlighten me?

I'd rather throw a culture on a slant with a craft stick in it and be sure it's stored right. You can also store a culture in mineral oil to keep it going but again. Slant.

I figured slants are the best way to go. I just thought the water idea sounded neat.

Also, it's worth considering the fact that there may be no long term storage of mycelium due to power grid failure and gas shortages. Spores would be the only long term storage.

Or get SAB game on lock. Lmao. For cold storage a cellar could be made with cultures and food, packed in straw for long term storage and stocked with ice blocks during the winter. I watched a video about it on YouTube a while back they said this storage method would give them cold storage damn near clear through the summer I don't really remember the exact details though or what there climate was like just thought it was interesting.
