Amanita augusta?
    #26548622 - 03/21/20 10:48 AM (3 years, 10 months ago)

My first thought was Agaricus augustus (until I remembered it was March).

Found under oak along trail.  Pieces of other fruits had been kicked around by oblivious mountain bikers.  (I am a NON-oblivious mountain biker.)

Dry cap has hard, sharp pyramidal warts that refuse to budge.

It appears to be an Amanita species, and it also appears to change color, note the pinkish blushing on the stem just above the annulus.

What about A. novinupta? Mind you I'm not very knowledgeable on the California species.

What about something from the Amanita rubescens group? It appears to have red staining.

Looks quite similar to the rubescens that I've found in the past.

Both of you guys are good, because both point to A. novinupta, directly and indirectly.  (I think.)  I was back there today... found that some animal, or human animal , had upended a few of these, so I split the stem and found that it "blushed" at me with red staining.  I just don't really get where the pyramidal cap spikes came from on my original mushroom.  Maybe two species are here?
