Add Anti-Bacterial Soap to a Syringe? (A drop of Lysol seems to work well)
    #26548586 - 03/21/20 10:32 AM (3 years, 10 months ago)

If I added a small amount of anti-bacterial soap to a syringe, would it "clean" the spores inside the syringe? Or will it kill the spores too?

One way to find out!  I’d imagine if it kills microbes, it kills spores too, but ya never know til ya know, LC

I would maybe make a soapy water mixture then go 10% soap water 90% distilled.

Soap itself is more antibacterial than the antibacterial chemicals they add to soap. Soap rips apart cell membranes. Spores may last but it may be time dependent

I see. So it would have been added right before using the spores as the spores have a short life span in a soapy, antibacterial solution?

Quick, some one get the microscope and do a soap water slide with spores.

People add rinse aid to syringes all the time to prevent clumping. It could work I think.

I have old prints that are not viable I can send you if you get a micro... They won't germinate for shit but you can use them like med students use cadavers.

Thanks for the offer. I actually have a ton of spore prints at the moment, ready for experimentation.

Vendors used to add a dash of jet dry to spore syringe  solution so they could get more syringes per print. Theory was it Helps break up the clumping of spores.

Jet dry? I see.

So today Im attempting an experiment. While in the SAB, I made a spore syringe using a half pint jar (good but a quarter-pint would be better). First shot in the clean water from a syringe then added about a 1/3rds worth from the inner circle of a medium sized spore print. I then swirled the mixture well. Then i sprayed half a second of Lysol Anti-Bacterial spray into the half pint jar with the spore solution. I swirled the mixture again real well, then added a little more spores from that inner spore print circle cause the water looked too clear for my liking.

Lastly, i shot up 5 PF jars using the Lysol spray to clean the needle. The only mess up I may have done is that i might have got two spore syringes mixed up (one syringe i used for scrapping spores off the spore print), but since this is a test of the effectiveness of Lysol, its likely not a big deal. Time will tell.

Wish me luck.

Good luck, homie.  You gonna do one with the soap too?

Yes. Like Dawn clear soap would be cool right. I might even try some natural alternatives like Citrus Oil or Cedar Oil.

So I would be curious to see this done on agar. Mid if I hop on board?

Please, be my guest! I would hope that making a spore solution with a small amount of anti-bacterial soap would help clean the spores of a "dirty" spore print, leading to easier agar work.

Let us know. I just assume adding anything would probably increase the chances of contamination especially if it is something that doesn't come sterile because there are always organisms that can tolerate stuff like that.

Kizzle... Sweet signature picture.

I'm thinking two syringes. Both with distilled water, one with 10% soap solution.

1 spore print in a shot glass. Distilled water syringe goes first as a control, soap water gets sloppy seconds.

Both to agar...and wait.

Sounds like a good plan.

In Nature, looks like Cinnamon Oil is the best out there: https://healthyfocus.org/8-powerful-antibacterial-essential-oils/

Might have to try that after the dish soap experiment :strokebeard:

OH good! A mad scientist consortium. :uptosomething:

I've wanted to try something like this for years with a polysorbate product called Tween. It's fairly common in plant tissue culture.. another hobby

Going under a stay home order after tomorrow so I guess I'll have time to play. I'll be using Tween 20 and keep you posted.

Here's an interesting article regarding fungal spores and surfactants..

https://publications.waset.org/4655/pdf

Thanks for the inspiration LC :highfive:
Maybe this time I'll actually do it
