Alternative substrates for monotubs
    #26548113 - 03/21/20 05:03 AM (3 years, 10 months ago)

I work in the greenhouse industry and want to get yall's thoughts on these alternative substrates. I know coir is king, peat is not preferred, but what about these:

Parboiled rice hulls - https://www.riceland.com/pages/rice-hull-products/

Wood fiber - https://www.hydrafiber.com/

Pine bark - https://www.klsupplies.com/products/mulch/composted-pine-bark

They will all work. Not great but i bet you will get flushes.
Rice hulls dont hold water well.
Wood fiber sounds terrible too, use it for wood lovers...
Pine bark will be the hardest but i bet you can use it as much as 50% in  poo and it would be fine.

I wouldn't use any of these but  wouldn't be surprised with success.

Welcome to the shroomry :hi:
I would suggest sticking to coir, poo , or straw untill you know what your doing.

Cool thanks!

I am just going to have to break down and buy coco.  I am going to give the wood fiber a try in one tub and see.  It is a 70/30 wood fiber/peat blend and has the pH adjusted to 6.  Will also add about 20% vermiculite.  Any other thoughts?
