Tobacco, Chemistry Help
    #26547099 - 03/20/20 04:32 PM (4 years, 1 month ago)

I read that fresh green tobacco leaves contain virtually no carcinogenic TSNA's. MY question is: If I harvest the green leaves, dehydrate them in a food dehydrator then vacuum seal the dried herb, will this prevent the nitrosation of pyridine-alkaloids in the tobacco?

No. TSNAs are formed when tobacco alkaloids react with nitrates, both of which are already present in the green leaves. The drying process just gives them a nice dose of heat and time to let the TSNA forming reactions occurr. Burning the leaves probably helps form TSNA's, too.

What's your goal, here?

I'm confused what TNAS are exactly. Have any of you extracted nicotine from Rustica tobacco to make vape juices out of? I wanna learn to make it for myself this year.

N-Nitrosamines are formed by flue curing of tobacco.

If you just dry the leaves with a food dehydrator or in the sun, you have no problem with them.

They are hanging the leaves in the smoke of a fire and wonder why it picks up carcinogens.

Flue curing, whih is done to just about all tobacco but snus, makes it more dangerous.

"American Spirit" tobacco too, flue cured and therefore more toxic.

Can you explain that further? Wood smoke certainly contains more N-nitrosamines than sun cured tobacco would have, but it's not like other curing methods will produce no N-nitrosamines, since there's plenty of amines and nitrates in tobacco leaves. You could freeze-dry the leaves then extract and purify the nicotine (i.e. make nicotine gum or vape juice) and minimize the TNSA content, but if you're packing the tobacco in a pipe or some rolling paper and lighting up it would seem like you're getting a bunch of N-nitrosamines no matter the curing process.
