Spawn Bag/LI/Slurry Issues

Ok here’s the deal I’ve had multiple runs at Grain slurries and liquid inoculate into spawn bags with about 4.5 qt. I had no problem getting anything to grow on WBS but I switch to oats. I have prep about 30 bags all failing with no growth. I’m following Eat’s slurry tek and liquid inculcate tek, so I guess my question is what are some common mistakes that could cause this? I’m now switching back to white millet(pretty close to WBS) and bought a new pressure cooker with a gauge. Is it possible if my pressure cooker was never getting to 15psi to have growth never occur? I know my sterilize technique is ok because Ive had over 100 agar plates transfers that all uncontaminated. I’d appreciate any insight.

What tek are you following to prep the oats?

That’s weird nothing would grow.
I only use wbs and sometimes let it sit in a bucket of water for three days just scooping out a strainerful to make jars here and there with no problems.
Recently I got a new kind and it’s got either wheat or oat mixed in there and if it soaks even a little too long somehow gets crazy bacterial. Def seems like prep has to be on point with some grains.

I've had to set my PC times way higher than most of the teks advise because the oats in my area are really lousy and seem to be loaded with contams. I'd still get growth with recommended times but it'd be infected as fuck.
I've had weak LC not jump to grain because I was impatient and didn't let the myc establish enough before pouring it. Maybe something similar happening here?
Edit: To answer OP's question about the PC, even if something was wrong with the pressure or time, you should still see some activity after transferring to grain in my (admittedly limited) experience.

I’m going leave them around for week or 2, hopefully something grows. I’ve seen multiple accounts with slurries and LI only taking a week at most to reach full colonization. That’s why I’m concerned when after a week I have 0 growth. I’m going have to go back to g2g **sigh** till I can get this LI or slurry down very frustrating when g2g can take up to 3 weeks.

See WBS was fine with franks method but I switch to oats. I’m going back to millet So I’m hoping one of the changes addresses the problem. If I’ll be back posting on here.

Try prepping oats on the dry side. I prep my oats no longer than 20 minutes at a rolling boil. It’s easy to overcook oats if you boil the shit out of it. And if you are adding moisture always good to go on the dry side. And maybe use less inoculant if it’s not sticking to the grain.

I’ve only used lc a few times and li in the form of ultra soft agar that dissolves when you shake it. Both worked great but like you said wasn’t done in 4-5 days. Took almost that long to see significant growth but once it recovered it did go fast cuz it was everywhere.

Simply a patience thing, all bags show growth although limited. I’m sure I can tweak my technique to get results just attempted some Blended LI in jars hopefully I’ll see an improvement.

That's excellent! I've also found that in reality my colonization times tend to go a lot more slowly than the insanely fast times people here have shown. Time, experience, and good genetics will all affect colonization. Glad to see things are finally progressing for you.

Correct me if I’m wrong, the boiling process allows the seed to hydrate than the air dry stops the excess moisture from causing bacterial contamination. I’m using millet what would be tell tell sign I got the moisture right?
