Contamination?
    #26544896 - 03/19/20 02:32 PM (3 years, 10 months ago)

So I foolishly rushed into this and although I did follow instructions from the kit I bought upon researching things further I made some rookie mistakes. Out of 12 jars 3 seem as though they've 90% colonized but have all but halted growth. The other 9 jars are maybe 40% and seem to have been contaminated. So my question is of the 3 that have been more "successful" do they look as though they've also been contaminated? Should I even bother trying to rinse off the non colonized substrate and fruiting these? I am aware now that foil on the lids is not wise for incubation and I had them incubating in a room that has ambient light through 2 small windows. I used a glove box and sterilized with high % rubbing alcohol between jars. As of now I'm fairly certain my verm layer got wet and ruined things. And the ambient light plus contam caused early pinning in some jars. It's been about 5 weeks since inoculation. Pretty much should I scratch everything do more research and start fresh or try and fruit the 3 that seem semi successful? Pics are of front and back of the 3 jars that seemed possibly ok. I hope I got the pics right... 1st time posting

Those pics don't look obviously contaminated. They probably stalled
from lack of proper gas exchange from tin foil lids. The ambient light
is actually good at all stages of growth. The pinning in the jar is most
likely from contamination.

As far as washing off the uncolonized portions and trying to fruit.
I don't know I've never done it. Take the tin foil off and see if they'll
Get to 100% if not then I guess you only can try to fruit them.

What did you use in your jars?

Thanks for the advice! I just am not 100% on what different contams look like. In many of the severely stalled jars there were white puffy spots sort of things growing on the mycelium and sort of a "hard line" of white that was on the edge of some of the mycelial growth that looked roughly like a turkey tail mushrooms shape and consistancy. Its possible that it's normal. On others between week 3 and 4 a light grey fuzz began appearing sort of overlapping the end of the mycelium which seemed to coincide with when it stalled. Nothing in the stalled jars was super obvious like what I'd seen looking at various contam pics on the web.

I ordered jars from what I believe is a reputable company. Heres what they claim is in them- "We have combined special organic brown rice flour with vermiculite, mineral water, Liquid worm castings and Bee pollen. Each jar has four pre-drilled holes in the lid and a top dry layer of vermiculite for added protection." I also got the kit from them which had some bogus instructions that upon doing more research seem to be poor advice

It's not as bad as you are assuming. These jars are stalling because of FAE, the substrate is overly hydrated and it's MS which means your gonna have some losses.

Rumfor69 has it right, take the foil off and see if they start to colonize the bottoms. They look like pint jars and mycelium can have a hard time colonizing packed pint jars.

You can leave them as they are for a week or birth them and wash the uncolonized substrate before dunking and rolling in vermiculite.
