Licorice is incredible * 5
    #26544233 - 03/19/20 09:03 AM (3 years, 10 months ago)

No other food i know of has such strong lover vs hater ratio. Seems like it's a minority of people that fall in between.
(just for clarification purposes i'm referring to black licorice. All other sorts are a different category of confectionery.)

Personally i funking love licorice. Any other licorice lovers here?
I live in Australia and Daryll Lea used to completely smash any competition. These day their licorice is half as long as it uses to be and more chewy.
I've switched brands to 'Licorice Lovers'. I prefer it due to the texture but it's a more aniseed flavour.

On another note, i don't mind sated licorice by the way but t needs to be moderation. I can't smash a bag of that stuff like i have seen another guy do. From what i've experience salted licorice is usually a very hard variety too. That hard texture is a huge put off to me.

In the UK i rember these Haribo like bags of licorice squares and rectangles and stuff, some of it was pink or white but mostly black. Anyway, it's so terrible, I can't understand how it can be enjoyed.

It's ok.  I don't love it but I don't detest it either.  Having a liking for the taste does help with the consumption of absinthe.

I absolutely hate black licorice.

My roommate is a 'jagermeister girl' in addition to her regular day job and a few weeks ago she brought home the most disgusting bottle of cold brew coffee jager that is still sitting in our freezer. Even she tapped out and she ordinarily loves that shit. I normally love coffee flavored things, but coffee and licorice? Wtf were they smoking and where can I get some?

These are pretty good, they took the only type of thing in "licorice allsorts" that is any good (clear licorice gummies with candy balls on the outside, no coconut stuff anywhere) and sell a bag of just those.

The worst are those licorice gummies that are just salty instead of sweet. I think they might be a Dutch thing or something. Just horrible.

I only like red licorice. Black licorice is way too strong for my liking. But then again, some people LOVE IPA beer, but i cant stand the drink!

I used to love the fruit flavored rainbox licorices, red is good too.  Black is okay but not my favorite

I wonder if there are like licorice purists, who look down on people who don't eat purely black licorice? Licorice connoisseurs

Red (and *any colour/flavour licorice)  is a commercial con on the public so that licorice lovers can buy pseudo licorice for their partner to justify their own purchase of real licrice... Just to be clear, i am not saying that 'other flavours of licorice' are bad. In fact i am very fond of the raspberry variant. What i am saying is that they're not real licorice. They're confectionery pacifiers for the haters whom developed relationships with real licorice lovers.
Seriously no one goes out of their way to buy non-black licorice.

You mean licorice root. It's a natural expectorant, it loosens phlegm and mucus. Traditionally you'd just chew the root but it's good as a tea as well. Particularly with peppermint.

As for the candy though, Basset's hard licorice sticks are by far the best. So hard that your jaw aches after chewing one. It's candy for masochists:wink:

Guys, its a home remedy of course, but black licorice has slight anti-COVID activity on account that its licorice extract has antiviral effects.

Just like champagne is best drank French, Dutch licorice is the best. The Dutch are THE licorice country.

We have dozens of kinds.

My favorite is honey licorice.

They do actually contain liquorice, just minor insignificant amounts. The same way that white chocolate contains chocolate but you wouldn't know it.

You're right about Darrell Lea letting their game down, even the number of times I've gotten stale liquorice. Liquorice lovers are definitely the safest bet.

Absolutely true. I ordered some salmiakki with pepper inside not knowing it was hard candy, it was still really good anyway until it all spilled out in my bag and melted. My backpack is sticky now and smells like ammonia now and I don't use it.

Never been a fan of Daryll Lea licorice, too chewy as you mentioned. For licorice I find the cheaper the better for some reason.

btw ever tried tyrkisk peber? That's an interesting one, licorice + a bit of peppery heat. It has that salmiak flavor in there but it's pretty edible and not as overpowering as the Dutch stuff.

Nah it's more like a hard boiled lolly. I think they have soft versions but I didn't see it where I bought it (Lollies ‘N Stuff).

So you like the soft texture? I could never get into it, I like it rubbery lol

Rubbery is okay in a pinch but if it crunches its a no go for me. My parents go to town on Humbugs but i absolutely hate them. Either way i'll keep my eye out for them. Never heard of Lollies ‘N Stuff (unless that's that joint at Southern Cross Station). I'm a real country lad, sorry. Even if they're hard i'll buy them just to try this flavour you speak of.

I may love licorice but sausage isn't meant to taste like that. People think they're being fancy adding the thing but they're ruining a perfectly decent food.  I honestly despise fennel. I'm honestly curious to real world use of Fennel because it just sees over the top to me.

It's an Italian thing. My mom's side is from Sicily and they'd always put bowls of fennel out after a meal because it supposedly aids in digestion.

To be fair, Koods post a video earlier relevant to this matter, and while i've never consumed an extreme amount of fennel, i definitely have indulged in licorice more that i'm proud to admit and i can attest to its digestive catalyst properties.

I don't care, still totally worth eating!

A friend of mine very likely has COVID. Because of knowing herbalism he went for chewing licorice root to get at the licorice extract and indeed this seemed to alleviate things for him somewhat.

Licorice root is well known to be effective in respiratory ailments.

Of course he also 5x a day dissolves a teaspoon of neat vitamin C in water and drinks that.
That in itself mitigates for instance flu symptoms greatly.

Apparently the ammonium chloride in salty licorice is supposed to be there for respiratory related medicinal purposes as well. I don't trust it though.

Whats there not to trust about ammonium chloride? Both NH3 and HCl are physiological molecules, as is NH4Cl itself.

As long as its foodgrade.

There is the aspect of ammonium ions being a waste product that the body goes to great lengths to eliminate, though I guess it is a small quantity in the licorice. I just think of ammonia/ammonium ion as a poison basically, and I don't think it belongs in my lungs if it can be avoided. Don't like the idea of it being added to cigarettes either.

I eat two vitamin C pills close to daily as well. I love the taste of them but i hate the smell. They're not concentrated though. I used to work at an organic farm with unlimited bags of (concentrated) ascorbic acid (powdered form) available due to one of the investors being a chemist mad about the chemistry and science behind everything. I always say that if you're sick and not getting the runs then you're not taking enough vitamin c. The ascorbic acid i used to get was very concentrated and so much better than the store pills i'm buying now. While i'm new to the helath benefits of licorice i can totally back up as accredited as i am to the consumption of vitamin c.

For anyone wondering what the fuck vitamin c does it basically acts as fuel for your immune system. Keep that tank full so that your immune can kick some viral ass.

For something to be licorice it has to contain liqorice root extract, only the black stuff is really licorice, just like "white chocolate" isnt chocolate and "0% beer" isnt beer.

Yeah yeah, I was joking.  But I do love twizzlers.  I love when people call twizzlers liquorice.

I remember Baskin Robbins used to have a "Tiger Tail" ice cream that was orange and licorice. For some reason nobody seems to want to make orange ice cream for the most part though, even though it's an awesome combo (see orange creamsicles). Meanwhile, orange sherbet, which is trash, is ubiquitous.

That's the one. When I was a kid, I lived in a small town and every summer an ice cream stand would open for the season and I'd always get tiger tail.
Good memories.

Damn black coffee w/ Ouzo or Sambuca is a staple aperitif at my place... Its such a perfect flavor combo.

https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26545160#26545160

I was eating the brand Daryll Lea. I was bitching about the brand earlier in the OP but I bought two bags over Easter because i coudn't get anything else. One for me, and one for my dad. Mine was shit but my dad gave me a couple of strips from his and they were incredible and soft like it used to be. I bought two more bags recently, one i ate entirely last night and the other i've begun on tonight  I must admit that i'm sold on Daryll Lea again.

Twizzlers are straight up inedible. Theyre just gross red tubes of congealed plastic.

I think sambuca is made with black licorice though and that stuff tastes alright.

Come to think of it isnt the fact that eating a large handful of black licorice can give you serious health problems enough to tell you it shouldnt be a food
