did i overheat my rye spawn?

hi all, first-time user/poster here, long-time lurker. had somewhat successful grows in the past making my own grain/substrate/monos. for reasons i won't get into, making my own spawn isn't an option for the time being so i bought some rye bags from a trusted, popular vendor. knocked them up with various MS strains (i know, i know, i'll get agar going whenever i can also do my own spawn...) four days ago at a ratio of roughly 1 : 1.66667 (pounds of grain : cc's) with the exception of one bag which got twice that ratio. i've always colonized at room temp, but decided to get a heater to run intermittently and speed things up. i've never used heaters/incubators for fear of leaving them running or losing control of temp, and that's what happened - i accidentally left it running for about 3 hours while i ran errands. pulled all bags out of incubation room as soon as i noticed and placed a thermometer in there; it got up to 91 before i removed it to measure temps elsewhere, but my thermometer/humidity gauge may just be inaccurate. i've ordered jars in the meantime to get back to what i know.
my question is this: did i totally cook my bags? only four days in, no signs of col/myc yet, now at about 76 with one bag at 73 (strain can handle colder climate). i obviously have to wait another week or two before i expect to see any growth or contam, but at what point should i either consider re-inoculating or throwing them out?

Definitely warm, but I don't think you totally killed them, if low 90s is accurate.
I'd wait to around 3 week to a month before you call it a loss and start over. Try to keep that temp in control in the meantime lol

lol okay thanks, they're all staying at room temp now. and if anything i think the thermometer is running high - the room feels like 76-78 to me, but the damn thing says 82

It's better if you can keep them 68-72°F these higher temps your hitting are only going to make it nicer for contams to grow more than it helps mycelium grow faster. Especially seems how you used MS syringes. It will probably be about 2 weeks before you see good mycelium growth.

when i removed the bags a few days ago, i set them in various conditions to test col temps, since my thermometer might be inaccurate. most bags now reside somewhere around 72-74F. two bags were placed back in the incubation room which, without additional heat, stays 77-79F according to the thermometer.
all other bags are emitting a faint earthy scent from the filter patch, but the two put back in the unheated incubation room smell strongly of... pineapple/peach syrup, like you'd find in a fruit cup or can of preserves - wtf? is this indicative of contam?
edit: just found first myc growth in a few spots in one of the room temp bags

Sweet smell like that can sometimes mean a bacterial contamination but you'll still wannna let them try to colonize

yeah i have no choice but to let them colonize anyway, and they're isolated from the other bags
the smell is sweet and definitely sour, which usually means contam, so...

Right, all ya can do sometimes but they may still give ya some fruit who knows. Especially if your goal is to get a clone on some agar to transfer until clean.
