Brown circle from where it was connected to the log but other than that it seems to be the exact same as the rest of the mushroom...the texture in the 4 photos is what the underside looked like I had my daughter she was super tired and passing out in my arms and we just went walking to see horses and goats I didn't bring my foraging gear so I had nowhere really to store it...But if I can get a TI to chime in and say it's highly possible it was indeed lions mane I will get up right now at 11 pm and go snatch the specimen it's a two mile walk from my driveway :super:

4 mile walk in the middle of the night just to recover the specimen and the colonized log... #Motivation

Now that I have the log and some logs gathered from the same dead tree what can I do to get a patch going and how do you drop it's spore?

Whatever happened here?  I wasn't sure what to think.  Would Lion's Mane look like this in early stage?

Doesn't really resemble the cheese polypore when cut open

Looks more like a young Trametes pubescens and they're known to winter in the southern states.

That second pic appears to show the teeth-like structures one would lopk for in a Hericium species, but its difficult to say for certain.

Sounds like a good idea to dry out a sample for further study.

I like your idea of trying to grow more yourself, so you can see a fully mature specimen. Maybe it would be easier to ID then?

Good luck, brother!

The inside was all teeth like structure that is what has me stumped on this one the inside looks nothing like polypores but I could be wrong and it's just a really fresh specimen of one...I am definitely going to try and grow out a new specimen and let it grow out completely

Thanks for the help everyone

If there are actually 'teeth' consider Climacodon pulcherrimus. Tyromyces seems inline with what I can make out.  As previously stated it's certainly not lion's mane, at least you got some exercise.
