Thank you obtuse! I was blown away myself to be honest, but I’d been watching temps in this specific area for two weeks, it paid off, it’s also the earliest I’ve ever seen them! Ohh nice! I hope you have some luck in the paddocks this year!

Hahahaha thank you Blazer! I hunt in the bush miles from civilisation, it was actually nice to get out away from all the stress and negativity from this virus, I hope it doesn’t completely fuck up people’s hunting efforts this year.

Nice work webetrippymane

My first season since I was a reckless teenager.

What a year we are having. I dare say I’ll meet a few fellow hunters on the NW this year due to the tight restriction that will be in place meaning not many people moving about the place. Bush hunting will be good for mental health.

Thank you friend, I’m in the south and things are good early, not much rain for the next fortnight will slow things down a bit, good luck out there, hope you can get yourself a haul for the coming months. :mushroom2:

as a side note it is illegal to collect anything from a national park in Tasmania.

if you get caught you will get fined

Kind of sucks considering most of the good spots in Tas are far out from the city in national parks, hope it’s removed before the end of the season.

I don't see how they could police it.  And when I googled it, I think closed only in the sense of closing campgrounds and boom gates.

Yep I agree difficult to police at this point. Let’s face it we are the last people looking to break the social distancing rules whilst hunting

If I’m successful this year it’s going to be a hell of trip for my first experience in 20 years. I work in health care too so expect I’ll need some serious time to prepare my mind. Anyway for whatever reason I feel this is the year so I’m pretty excited and nervous for sure.

But I love bush walking so hunting gives me even more desire to get out there.

I plan on heading up into the hills this weekend for a scout, don’t expect to find the subs but I’m sure I’ll find some spots to get back to as the season gets into full swing.

As a side note for you experienced hunters.... do you have any idea at this early stage what kind of a season you expect?

It is an early season.  but that usually means an early finish, say may.  but it may also mean you might get a second wave in late july, August before temperatures rise again.

I'd give it a fortnight anyway before going on a hunt, I've found pins so far, only one mature specimen, little rain the last week and warmer temps will slow things down just a lil. they cannot man all of the parks and reserves, there are 100 different ways in/out of them if you know what you're doing.

And in regards to a first experience in a while, dont do what i did and ingest 5.6 dry of subs, on my second ever trip, have not touched them since.

Could you (or someone else) give a rough estimate as to what time subs and azurence would pop up at close to sea level (20m-5m is the alltitude of the spots)
Last season was my first season and what I found in 3 different spots were big patches of subs and azurence in late April and ofc May but I was wondering if this would mean early for the spots here also.

(Photo attached was my first ever pic I stumbled upon after work one night)

Happy Foraging and
Ty to any answers lol 😎👌

Psilocybe azurescens don't occur in Tasmania, all the mushrooms in your photo are Psilocybe subaeruginosa.

But this shows really good evidence, for the fact that maybe Psilocybe azurescens is actually Psilocybe subaeruginosa, but we need to do genetic analysis.

The season has already started, and I would assume that as soon as the temps at sea level get down below 6 degrees C.  That can be as early as late March, mid-April.  so my advice is to go have a look now.

Psilocybe subaeruginosa are hugely variable.  Depending on substrate, nutrients, and environment - let alone genetics - they have a variety of appearances.

I have been saying it for years but it would be great to do a genetic study across all the phenotypes that we find in Australia.

I have found Ps. Subaeruginosa from Umbonate, to wavy to ones with just flat caps, there are heaps of genetic diversity in the species depending on substrate/growing conditions. As obtuse said, there needs to be more microscopy work done on each to know for sure.

Hello.

Just wondering if anyone else in Tasmania has ever come across a scorpion in or around their house?  I found this guy on my bed!!!  luckily I had been up for around an hour or so.
I was told by a friend that the do sting and that it's quite a painful experience but that was about the worst of it.

But you see I have a cat, and Im not sure what would happen if she got stung.  I would hate to lose my cat to one of these little buggers :frown:

I will search the internet about them when I get the chance, but I just wanted to see if any of you already have experience with Tasmanian scorpions?

Thanks

As a child when my parents were living on Bruny Island, i woke to find a scorpion in my bed.  Naturally i freaked.

I was a curious kid, and in the following months found numerous scorpions living under rocks.

Not sure on how poisonous they are, but yeah that stinger looks like it would hurt.  Jack Jumpers are bad enough!

Hey blessed, the sting is about as bad as a bee sting. They aren't poisonous, as obtuse said, jack jumpers! they're probably worse

Still not a lot around yet, some are from at least a fortnight ago and have almost started to rot. I say another 14 days things will be good to go.

Nice Umbonate bois, probably why people think they’re azzies.

Hi all,
Seasoned hunter, first time poster.
Having a ripper early season kicking off about 2 weeks ago with a few subs popping in the usual places late last month and then really had a good look over the weekend resulting in almost 1kg wet. As for tripping, jumped right in with about a 5g dry dose and golly gosh was it intense in the best way possible.

Also loving the huge abundance of Amanita Muscaria out and about, Found some beut's in a pine plantation.

Happy Shrunting for the 2020 Season everyone- hope to meet, safely from a government mandated distance, some of you soon

Good shit Shrunter! Nice to see others finding some goodies, how did you find 5g? I had two 5.6 experiences last season, fucked me up. :mushroom2:

Thanks Mane, yeah the 5g was good, myself and 2 buds all had a very decent trip. Kicked in quick, giggled our tits off for maybe 2 hours then things got a bit deeper and we all needed our space. had some awesome open and closed eye visuals. only downside was not being able to sleep due to ingesting a bit late. ive tripped on less weight and for sure on more after building a bit of a tolerance but i would say these were some of the most potent little numbers i ever did munch.

Hi all, first time posting here. I hope you are all staying safe and loving life.

I hope this is allowed but I am wondering if anyone could share some suggestions for places to look in the south that are not closed? I do not like the idea of getting caught by authorities looking for shrooms in a closed area while we are in lockdown.

I know some areas like knocklofty and waterworks remain open, but surely they're not good spots. Any other tips? I normally hunt on the Mt. PMs welcome if you don't want to share publicly.

Hello fellow Tasmanians

Hope your week is going well, and that you've already got your $750
Welcome to the Shroomery FunnestFungus :costanza:

Thanks obtuse & mike20 for your post concerning scorpions, thank you. I've found out that there's really not much more to find out about them.
Im hoping to speak eventually with a pest controller to find out exactly what species it was and whether or not it will F up my kit-Cat :coolcat:.  But for now im just fixing up any gaps that
they can crawl through.  Im on the second floor so unless they also live somewhere within the block of flats, im guessing that they climb the outer walls and find hole or cracks to enter/hide.

:drinkndrive::illsaveyou::manvsfish::drunkdriver2:
On the subject of heading out, it seems that each state has it's own set of rules, but I did see on the news tonight, that in NSW, people are not allowed to just go for a drive unless it's a valid reason;

Shopping/essential services
Doctor's/medicine
Work
Visit to vulnerable family or friends (not 100% sure if that's still allowed)

99% of any other activity will result in a fine.

We are all currently allowed to go exercising, but im pretty sure that if you drive far enough away from your house, say 10ks or more, the likely hood of getting a fine will be quite high.  I would like to call the police about it (might still do that) and ask what is allowed or not.  But again im pretty sure that you can't drive for 20 ks + away from your house and try to use the "im going exercising" excuse,
as they will ask why you couldn't just go for a walk or bike ride in your own suburb.

So partly for that reason and another, I've decided not to hunt this year.  I've been using Magic Mushrooms since 2011 and have only missed one season as I had a mental breakdown a few years ago.
In a way it will be good to have a break from shrooms (I may skip next year too) cause if you take too much, you'll lose the magic, then it just becomes almost an un-enjoyable experience.

Anyway, have a great week and take care

Travel in and of itself doesnt result in the spread of a virus. Coming into contact with people who are infected, or being infected oneself and coming into contact with others apparently do. Travel doesnt necessarily result in either of these. This is an unecessary measure of control and profiteering.

While that may be the case for a section of the government or the police force, one reason I believe it's important not to just go for a drive is because if you're allowed to go for a 30min - 2 hour drive just to get out of the house then that means I am too allowed (and 50 thousand other people who want to go for a drive too).  So, it becomes possible that many people will go for a get out of the house drive at the same time.  This then brings new problems;

- Going to the toilet (1 is not so bad but what about number 2?), and where exactly are you/I going to go to the toilet? it just start to create problems as far as the virus having the chance to spread, and just like gravity this virus will seek the easiest route.

That's basically why I believe fishing is not allowed, a lot of people would go out and then a situation would occur where in some places people would group up.  And let's not forget the people who have absolutely no regard for their fellow man.  All this and more is why I think this driving rule is in place, they know that a portion (maybe 25% of the population) will break social distancing rules, that public toilets could be come a place that the virus takes hold and then nearly every person that uses the toilet might not only catch the virus, but then go home to their own suburbs and start to spread it all around there (eg the gas pump they use, the stock in the supermarkets they touch but put back down, and the possibility of coughing the virus all over the place, making things even worse.

I really do think that we are in a not good situation due to how contagious this virus is, yes we'll get through it but like the song says, this winters gonna hurt like a mother aha.

So I recently asked the Tasmanian police about driving to places for the purpose of exercise.  I was basically told that it's currently ok to drive somewhere that's say is a 30 min drive for exercise purpose.  So basically at this moment Tasmania is not as strict as VIC or NSW.  That could change of course but the main thing the police officer stressed was to keep social distancing, at which time I told him that the way im dealing with that is that I haven't showered for a month .

But still be careful because it will ultimately be up to the cop that pulls you over that will have the final say, so it seems for now driving around 10 plus kilometers or around 30mins one way to a destination from your house is allowed/should be ok in Tasmania (btw, I'm in the north).  Just don't push your luck cause if a fine was given, based on what I've heard on the news from other states, it won't be a cheap fine.

If any one else want to ask a police officer to confirm that I was given correct information then please do and let us know what they tell you .

Have a great weekend :borat:

Hi guys

I spoke to the police again today and was basically told that it's not really allowed to go for a drive too far away from your house (if for exercising).  Some of you maybe lucky that you can walk to shrooms from your house, but for the rest of us that need to drive up to and more then an hour (cop today said a 30 min drive is not allowed, and that's not just for easter but the general rule now in effect), so....

It is my advice to all Tassie hunters to only hunt for mushrooms this year if you have them within walking distance from your house, or it's only is a 5 - 10 min drive away, of course you don't need to listen to me, but for your own good, I would cancel your plans for hunting this year, sorry to say that. but it's your call of course.

Just to give you an idea of how much we need to change our lifes, I asked the police if my next door neighbor could come to my house and play 2 player games on the xbox
(His door is 4-5 meters away!!! ( I live in a block of flats)).

Guess what he said????? (I rang the main Launceston Police station in the city)

I dont want to derail this thread further, but i feel i need to say something.

Geez man you need to stop talking to the police. They're not saints, they do not know the best thing to do in all situations. They gang bashed Rodney King, they racially profile, they ruin peoples lives with unjust jailing, excessive fines, many have a superiority complex and enjoy controlling people. Is it okay for them to do any of that shit?

If you get robbed or someones murdered, sure call them. But stop being so dependent and needing to be told what you can and cant do. Be an individual.

Really man, just listen to yourself "Meester poweece officer can i pway xbox".

Hes not your father, just go and play some fucking xbox with your mate if you want to.

hello OOISI

First of all, im sorry to you and my fellow Tasmanian if in trying to share about the impact that this virus could/will have on peoples plan to hunt this year, that I've given people a headache. It was honestly not my intention, so sorry.

We're all adults here so, Im just giving my 5 cent worth.

Maybe I should end this topic like this, I won't be driving to the places I normally go to because according to not only what I was told by police today (I asked from the going to exercise point of view) but also basically because it's on the news nearly every day, that is..... go too far from your house and you'll be giving back the government the $750 they just gave to you (not you, I mean you people(s)).

Again sorry.

that's it, no more on that subject

On another subject I saw some mushrooms just near where I live, not actives but still mushrooms never the less.  So I was thinking for those that don't want to risk driving too far for shrooms, that maybe we could share the local in-actives we find around the suburbs as we go for walks where we live instead ?

Hope you have a good Easter OOISI

I have a question for you guys.

I’ve been gifted a spot at sea level that fruited last year. Now obviously the restrictions are causing some issues and I don’t want to get into a debate over if we should be driving too far etc but I will be checking this spot at some stage and yes it will require some travel.

So my question is this, would mid next week be a bit early to be expecting to find subs that a mature at sea level? If no restrictions I’d go. Or am I better waiting a bit longer?

My gut says get down there at day break next week for a quick scout and see how things look. I have some other spots close to home I’m pretty keen on but for helping my ID purposes it would be great to lay my eyes on some early to help me ID close to home too.

So what would you guys do?

Noone can really tell you when exactly is the best time to check your spot, if the weathers favourable for the fungi you're hunting then just go and take a look.

Sometimes its only a matter of days before it completely comes alive, sometimes its longer.

Would be nice if there was some magical person who could pin point to the day spots they dont even know so you dont waste any time or fuel.

@myrealname,

Fair enough. I assumed it was perhaps still a bit early in general for the coastal area. I’m as good as new to fungi collecting so thanks for that advice. sounds like you are saying it could well be up and going already and only one way to find out.

Today's expedition to the Waterworks Reserve in Hobart resulted in this find. Found in decaying eucalyptus leaf matter, creamy brown gills on the younger ones and smokey brown on the older ones, golden tops and very purplish stained stems that are quite thick. They've been sitting on a piece of paper for an hour and there is a medium brown pattern but its not the "dark blue/brown" colour that people talk about. They seem to be bigger than the ones I've seen on here, so wondering if they are indeed Psilocybe Subaeruginosa? If anyone frequents the waterworks area, would you mind uploading a picture of what one should look for?

Please dont post an identification request in the official psilo thread. Create a new thread to ask for IDs. I would say those are Cortinarius sp.

By the way, that isnt purple staining, that is the actual colour of the mushroom. Subs are indeed smaller, they have white stems that stain blue.

I also have a guide here, https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26552041 with photos of subs. Thats what your looking for.

Please do not post ID requests in official psilocybe season threads. Make a new thread in the forum for ID requests. You have nothing active. I posted a link to a sub guide in my post just above yours, my advice is to read it, it should help you.

As already mentioned this is a Cortinarius sp. likely Cortinarius
archeri
.  As already mentioned we request that you please do not ask for ID's in this thread.

These are really common and are one of the species often asked about because of the vibrant purple colour.  These are poisonous and have been responsible for people in Tasmania getting poisoned through confusion.

Not looking for an ID, I’ll post that later. But this looks promising.

@myrealname,

Fair enough. I assumed it was perhaps still a bit early in general for the coastal area. I’m as good as new to fungi collecting so thanks for that advice. sounds like you are saying it could well be up and going already and only one way to find out.

My last stop before returning home for breaky.

Hey Guys!

First season picking here, pretty new to foraging and new to this forum but not new to shrooms . Went for a hunt today, found a couple potential subs but still waiting on spore prints. Anybody have any tips for a newbie? We have been looking in wooded areas with lots of pine needles and decaying wood on the ground but we haven’t really had any luck. Is it still too early to be looking? I know they grow in man made wood chip gardens as well but with the current situation we are a bit wary of poking around in suburban areas too often. Anyways we are in north east Tas, any advice or places we may want to check is greatly appreciated. Happy hunting :mushroom2:

Long time reader. First time poster.

Came across some P. Alutacea today in the North of the state. Still no subs for me

Found one walking last night. Was a productive day. Have 2 new spots I plan to hit which I expect to have to myself so hoping to take some pics of them growing if I get lucky.

@alutacea that’s awesome mate. I’ll be hunting for them soon too. Actually I’m surprised they are out already.

Very happy with them as my first active find, I basically stumbled across them when checking out potential Sub grounds.  I have just ingested 15 caps which I’ve been assured is a very small dose so I’ll see how that goes.  Any Alutacea experience advise would be great

Now to find those elusive Subs up North.  Any finds from up this way yet ??

A day and a half of searching around South Hobart and it's hills was pretty fruitless :frown:

Found this one beside a fire trail at 260m elevation, but that was it.

First time picker, havent had any luck finding and subs yet :frown:

Anyone had any experiences with Gymopilus around Tasmania?

I'm fairly certain I've seen a bunch of them and might put up an ID REQUEST tomorrow if people think they're worthwhile.

When you say “north” do you mean Launceston areas ?  If so were they in mulched garden beds ?

Newbie here. I've been trying to look locally around my city for a few days due to restrictions. What are my chances of finding some psilocybe mushrooms around the Launceston Gorge or surrounding areas?

If anyone thinks they can help me in the area, I'm pretty desperate so private message me if you prefer.

Thank you.

If I can give you any tips, check each mushroom you find for holes in the cap and around the base of the cap and the stem for holes, if there are holes the mushroom most likely has bugs in it. Open up an old one and see for yourself, since I learnt this trick I haven’t vomited on shrooms! Happy hunting, we’re finding lots in the south! Keep an eye out for moss on the ground, especially peat moss, we find lots under small ferns and amongst dead/ decaying wood. Happy hunting!

Hello bonkestrudes

When I started hunting many years ago I started looking around the Launceston Gorge area but was unable to find any.  But as there is a lot of bush land around the gorge, there's a good chance that you could find some.  As you walk around Launceston keep an eye open for any woodchip beds (parks and some walking tracks) as magic mushrooms love woodchips and they can grow like crazy in woodchip beds.

I've noticed that scattered around Launceston there are little reserves that could potentially have magic mushrooms growing in those areas.  The two first things I would do if I was you would be to go back over previous season threads, Victoria seems to have most post per season so I'd checkout around 2010 - 2015 season threads.  Go through from page 1 right to the end.  This is a great way to see many pictures of subs (magic mushrooms) and also as people occasionally post great advice within these threads, it's a great opportunity to learn a lot.

And second is to just get out there and start looking around.  You'd be surprised just how they don't need a large area to start fruiting and you could be driving/walking straight pass them.  I'd also suggest that you bring a camera if you are able to.  When taking photos it looks a little less suspicious when looking for mushrooms.

Next, be aware of impostors (looks like a magic mushroom but isn't).  here's some picture of subs beside some impostors.
(The one on the left is not a magic mushroom but a type of mushroom that can really stuff your internal organs if eaten)

And

Some Galerina patagonica I saw yesterday growing a few cm away from Psilocybe subaeruginosa:

If you're thinking about eating some subs, learning the difference could save your life. From the top they are almost identical to some populations of subs growing in grass in the open. They seem to be less common than subs, but I see them every autumn in wet forest.

So the main thing to remember is to learn as much as you can about subs and to take spore prints and make id post for any and all mushrooms that you think might be an active (magic mushrooms) for the first few years until you become very confident to know what is a sub and what isn't.

Also, checkout this thread
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/16164170#16164170
It contains pictures of habitats where subs (magic mushrooms) were found.

I hope that helps you and any other new members

hey guys! this is my first season and after many hours spent searching through pine forests and bush land up here in northern tas, I finally came across my first cluster in no better place then a mulched garden bed while walking to the shops this afternoon.. 😂 they were all still tiny pins but I took the biggest one for a spore print just to make sure they’re subs.

New account, old forager.
It has been an interesting start to the season, but it is always my favourite time of year! I hope you are all playing safe and being careful out there.

Interesting seeing a few really bad ID requests in this thread so far... Don't know, don't eat it. And please don't rip them out of the ground scissors are your friend.

I have had a slow start to the season, checking out my usual places lower on the mountain. It was too dry last week but is probably worth going out again now if you haven't picked them all yet .
Had an explore at one of my other spots and it was fun to see where subs were popping and not compared to the last few years. They always keep me on my toes the little guys do.

Has anyone had any luck with spore prints in spray bottles to help propagate when hunting?

Always nice to be outside.

Hey Guys, pretty new to the game and this is my first proper season (partook in the last bit of 2019 but had no luck), I've been doing my fair share of research about P.Subs for a while now and have been hunting quite extensively in my local areas.

Due to the current isolation laws, I'm quite restricted in elevation and have been hunting in pine plantations in the south of Tas. The area, based off of multiple sources I've read, seems perfect for wild subs to pop up, all except that these spots are at sea level. I have had no luck and I'm wondering if this is due to the elevation difference between myself and findings posted here. Will waiting for colder weather potentially give me more luck at this level in Tas? Thanks guys  Happy hunting and I'm glad to see all the finds so far, it's getting me quite excited!  Attached are some pictures of some pretty, yet inactive finds in the area so you can get a gist of my hunting area. And an unrelated fairy ring bc that's always lovely.

Hi All. Hope the early season is treating you well.
It’s my first season hunting and so far I’d say it’s going pretty well with a small find in a suburban mulch bed of about 8 fruits and yesterday I found my first wild sub when I was out getting some firewood and stopped by a small rainforest creek I know in the north of the state.

After stumbling across the wild sub while the dog was doing a piss I searched around for an hour thinking there must be more but couldn’t find another pin let alone patch.

So I have a question for the Tassie Guru’s if I can. Is it common to find lone Subs in the bush ? Where you find one there has to be others right !!! Or is it I case of too early in the season up north and bigger flush’s will occur in this area as the season progresses ?

Thanks heaps for any info provided and happy hunting

Nice that you’re finding fungi but make your own thread asking for help on IDs, it clutters the thread and makes it longer than it needs to be, none of those are active.

Make your own thread, IDs arent generally allowed in seasonal threads it’s for actives only, none of the species in your pics are active, good luck out there keep trying.

it hugely depends on the geography of the area, if it was a slope or gully or had a water source nearby and it was a single sub it’s more than likely spores have washed down from a larger patch in rain and it’s been ideal conditions and fruited, that’s just my experience. Have a really good look around the area you found the single one and follow the creeek you may find a heap more.

And i'd like to add that it's probberbly still too early up here in the north for subs to really get into the swing of things.
I'd say in around another 2-3 weeks things should really start to take off.  All we need is the :shroompick: and the temps to drop.

Thanks.
Was a slope in a gully leading down to the creek which is where I found it sitting out by itself growing out of the alpine heath ground cover.
Further exploration of the area required I think

Hi guys,

I’ll post an ID on this a little later today but excited to see what you might think.

Could I have found my first liberty cap? In a cow paddock in the NW.

Hi guys

New to the forum and new to hunting. Thought I might share this little find. Was out and about last week down South and came across these beauts.

Have been out a couple times since but no luck at all.

Can't wait for some rain!

I'd say in around another 2-3 weeks things should really start to take off.  All we need is the :shroompick: and the temps to drop.

Thanks.

Man... its the most frustrating thing when you find a wannabe sub (but a diff species and not psychoactive) growing in the same habitat a sub would.

I don't know why nature has to play with my feelings like that. Such elation mixed with such disappointment when you actually identify it isn't a sub.

Subs will grow anywhere given the conditions, found a bunch of semi mature specimens in the sand approx 30m from the tide of the ocean.

Actually enjoying not being able to visit my regular spots, makes the season interesting again having to search locally and find microclimates. These are two of my favourite shots I think I’ve ever taken, fungi is such a magical thing, never thought I’d find them on the beach.

Natural selection, to kill of idiotic people who don’t know what they’re doing is my guess. Hahahahaha! Is frustrating though but I’ve found flushes of subs within flushes of galerina, mushrooms are opportunistic bastards and will fruit anywhere given the chance.

I wouldn't say that just yet.  It's my experience that some places will fruit early, but the majority of patches need the temps to drop considerably (it needs to be consistent cold temps),
and the :shroompick: to fall before they'll start to fire off :mushroomgrow::mushroomgrow::mushroomgrow: in most places.

Btw, nice subs you got there SmurfHunter

Sorry bud, wasn't asking for an Id there, just popping in a few pics of inactive that I have found in my area I have to hunt in, so people could get the gist of the area in question, and the fungi that also grow. I am aware none were active, just wanted to show my territory to elaborate upon my question. And after going through all the years threads, I've seen you're an avid member and could potentially answer the question I had regarding elevation and environment. Any info you have on the topic on the original post I made would be greatly appreciated, if you have any to share . No worries if not, and apologies for cluttering the thread, figured it would help my case but I understand now it's probably a bit of an nuisance

Your spots are at, well close to sea level? Yeah i find elevated areas are better off. This is because elevated areas are cooler and tend to get more rainfall.

That’s no worries at all! I misinterpreted your post and mustn’t have seen the previous one sorry about that. In regards to elevation etc, it largely depends on moisture content of the area and how much sun it gets As some spots will take longer to fruit in the season if they are receiving more sun of a morning that dries the dew and most of the moisture in the area, best bet is to find areas that are shaded by the morning sun, And in regards to elevation from my experience it’s again in regard to dew and how much moisture is around it usually takes a bit longer for them to appear in lower areas closer to sea level. I hunt at mostly 250-300m elevation. I found my earliest subs this year at 800m elevation after watching rain in a specific area for two weeks, you just have to do the man hours and you’ll eventually be able to pick out spots just while driving, Subs will live on any decaying wood matter that is wet and cold enough but love lignin rich substrates like eucalyptus forests etc. This is just my personal experience from picking in southern Tas, obtuse and others may be able to help a bit more. Cheers.

No worries mate, I appreciate the information!! I'll set out for higher ground nearby after this weekend of wet weather hopefully. I know of some hills with westerly facing sides (away from morning sun), dence in eucalypt and within exercise distance. I'll have a poke around and post up any finds I get. Once again, I appreciate it!

Found a small amount about 1 and a half weeks ago in South Hobart, residing underneath bracken at the edge of eucalyptus forest near a creek.

I have searched more of the South Hobart area stretching towards Fern Tree numerous times in the last week and have come up completely empty handed. Went out today as the rain bucketed down and searched in wet eucalyptus gullies but to no avail. Can't seem to find any no matter how hard I try! I have tried searching in drier areas too (fire trails stretching towards Mt Wellington) but again, nothing.

I believe the weather needs to cool in the areas you are searching, but firstly there needs to be a healthy down pour of rain. I'd try a day or so afterwards as well.

They are about. My recent post was from a spot at a beach right at sea level, 5g or so dry, southern Tas. Just have to find them. All of the best spots for down here are still really sketchy to visit because of quarantine but they are around. Will be everywhere soon enough after this rain. The tassie psilocybe community is small, we should all make a conservative effort to use spore solutions in water bottles and spray it everywhere there is decaying wood matter haha! 5-6 printed caps would be enough to fill a bottle with millions of spores, give it a year or so and they would be everywhere! :mushroom2:

So the spray bottle of spore prints is effective? Do you just cut up the prints and put in spray bottle with water, shake and spray when hunting?

I found a few in South Hobart today, but also saw different species ripped out and discarded which was a little sad. More subs sure to follow soon enough even though this this rain has been completely overrated.

That's a great idea, I only wish that the Launceston City Council used woodchip for garden beds like they do in Melbourne. Over there, they use woodchips everywhere!!!!  :sporedrop:  :sporedrop:  :sporedrop:

yeah these were all found south of Hobart, luckily i have plenty of land they grow everywhere! lots of abandoned cattle paddocks around the area too. they seem to love the combination of moss, eucalyptus leaves or rotten limbs and cow shit.

how is your season going?

Mine... ie. SA's? Its just starting out. My patches were burnt in a bush fire, so i have to kick my behind into gear and start searching. We are a Hot Summer Mediterranean region as opposed to Tas, Vic and NZ who is Oceanic temperate... much more favourable for subs.

one way to get the person's attention that you want is to select quote (on the right side of each post).

I’m certainly finding that the two areas I’ve located Subs In the NW both at sea level went bananas this week.

Funnily I think I saw my first fellow hunter, an older guy walking in the rain with an umbrella and smoking a dart. Was a funny site and we just gave each other a grin. If I see him again I’ll see if he’s up for a chat.

Haha nice. I've always wondered about this... is there some sort of mushroom hunting etiquette that you are meant to follow?

I swear since I started hunting I view every bush walker as a hunter when 90% are probably just out getting exercise.

@funkadelic12 i feel the same about the bushwalkers.😂

As far as an etiquette I’m not sure but I’d love to meet a fellow hunter out there and have a good chat about the shrooms and whatever else comes up.

I no for sure a few people have been really sus on my behaviour especially when I’ve come out from under a Bush with a big smile on my face....I guess now that I read that back it’s no wonder anybody would be sus on that behaviour 😂🤪

If they look at you questioningly, just tell em you jerked off in the bushes. They'll be sure to leave you alone after that.

Hello!

Long time lurker, first time poster on here.

Visited my usual spots this season, but they all got poached. :frown: Networks were torn out. So decided to take a walk through a trail I hadn't been before.

In all my experience I've only ever seen subs on their own, a few groups here and there, never a proper patch like the one I stumbled across the other day! Check out this patch of beautiful matures I accidentally stumbled across! The rich colour and the immaculate caps!

[embed=425,344]http://www.

This is my first proper patch find . Never seen so many grouped together like that!

That video is crazy!

Can confirm that they are definitely out and about in the South. All over the mountain. Went for a look yesterday, and hilariously ran into one of my friends in a pretty obscure place. They showed me a close but new spot and it blew my mind :mushroom2:.

I sprayed some spores whilst hunting and will update next year on results. Method was to cut up four spore-prints into small pieces (they were left in the fridge since last hunt), placed in spray bottle, filled with tap water, shaken thoroughly and sprayed around my usual spots and other random places. Hopeful!

Hey all! I'm KesselRunner. Southern Tas.

Been almost a decade since I used to pick in my late teens, used to post on here but forgot the details so made a new account.

Went for a walk today and checked out the places I used to back in the day. Kunanyi/Mt Wellington, waterworks etc. Unfortunately the waterworks patch I used to have the most success at had been properly cleared. Many footprints off the main trails as well. I heard that on Sunday, the area had a lot of people looking. Like 30 people apparently.
Ran into some young guys, saw them picking frantically through the scrub and thought shit, they've found a huge patch. Kept walking and ran into another one of the guys. The one I talked to had an American accent I think. He said they hadn't been picking before but people told them to come up and just start picking (I think he even said "and eating"). I said it's not that simple and asked to check his ziplock. Various species in there but no actives. I showed him what a sub looked like, told him not to do what they've been doing, and said don't touch the slimy ones. Also said I wouldn't use those bags any more either.

A bit worrying, for both their health and the ecology of the area.

Also, @MadkuntMushie that video is amazing! As Gandalf once said, "Keep it secret. Keep it safe." :mushroom2:

I think I’m having some beginners luck. Good suburban find in a mulched garden bed right next to the road. I did a lot of research prior to this season on when and where to hunt and it seems like it’s paying off.

Man oh man. I thought I was going well get a bag full every trip but the size of those monsters. I’ve seen some decent subs but they look next level.

Well done friend

Just introducing myself to the other tassie pickers! Would love to see some of you out and about...  It's my first season picking and I think I am already getting obsessed as I can longer go for a run without stopping every 5 metres to examine the earth haha. Finally had success yesterday, found around 4 grams dried worth of mushrooms, mostly on a moist grassy hill next to a major road. 240 metres elevation / Southern Tasmania. They love open hills with bracken and leaf litter i've found. Around 60% I found were small and many are still pins (which I did not pick).

Waterworks was my old hunting ground during the 90's.  I would start looking early March to get on top of the rhythm of the season. There would always come a point mid-April where people started trashing spots all up through that valley, leaving rubbish, crushing mycelium, turning over any old mushroom.  It got really frustrating.

One of the reasons I stopped picking there was that exact reason. First few times I'd find a couple a dozen per walk, but eventually tapered off to nothing over the years. It felt as though too many people had found out about it and had no respect for the area. Keen to find more local places to go and get back into the rhythm

Super chuffed with our haul today. Finally got the chance to get out and about in some better areas and after a while of looking in eucalypt forests, southern Tas at around 340m elevation, we found a big patch spread throughout a roughly  10×10 area. To people without luck yet, just keep looking and hopefully you'll find the jackpot like we did today, because they're clearly out there! Approx 14 grams  dry but unfortunately couldn't get them absolutely cracker dry but you do what you can , they're still pretty snappy.

Nice finds
Chuck them in a container with some DampRid or other desiccant (make sure it doesn't touch the mushrooms as you don't want to be ingesting any form of desiccant), seal it up and check in a week or so.
If they were dry enough to begin with, they should now be cracker dry.
If you notice the desiccant has clumped together or looks moist, carefully replace it with a new batch, making sure the container is dry before refilling.

With an air-tight seal, a layer of fresh desiccant and a cool dark space they should keep for years

This was my last days haul and obviously I have enough for a long time. Maybe 75g dried for the season so far.

My objective is just to find another bush patch or 2 this year. Located 3 so far but all in the same area.

Anyway loving everyone’s photos, bloody excellent work. As a noob I can certainly say to those who are still struggling just keep looking, put in the hrs in the spots you identify as good ground and for sure you will find them. On my days off I’m been putting in 2-5hrs per day walking around. I love the bush though and combined with a bit of music I usually don’t want to return home. So stick it at I’m sure with the number of different patches I’ve come across that if you keep at it you will locate them.

Hey all,
Been lurking for a while so thought I'd post some pics.
Used to hunt years ago (mainly up north) but this is my first season down south.
Found about 70 in 3 trips so far.  First two trips were to a usual spot and found a whole steep hill had been very much picked over, but still found a few.
Then today I was up the East Coast for work and thought I'd try a few spots on the way home.  The pic of the massive (and going very blue) one on the plate is from a spot right next to the beach, 4m from a carpark!!!]

So here's some pictures of Galerina (impostors), Make sure that you NEVER eat these as they will stuff you up big time!!!!

Below is a comparison of Subs (on left) and Galerina (on right)
.
(notice the difference in gill color?)

If you are new or recently have started hunting for magic mushrooms, make sure that you inspect each and every mushroom to make absolutely sure that it is in fact a sub

And remember to make an id thread on this site for any mushrooms you're not 100% sure about.

And if you can't do that for any reason? then chuck out the mushroom in question (it's just not worth it)

btw, I haven't seen TimmiT around for awhile but here's a picture of those yellow worms he likes.

And lastly.... I haven't seen Nevermind on this site for many years now, so if you're reading this, I hope your going well :thumbup:

I find that the best indicator is the stem strength. If I have any doubts I kneel down and gently bend the stem. Subs hold extremely well, they are tough and firm. Other mushies and especially gallerinas just break.

I found my first glowing yellow worm this year too, strange little creature that I’m sure will show up on a trip at some stage?

Furthering off of other people's warnings, here is a Galerina right next to a Sub that I found the other day. Noticing the gill colour difference could really help you out. Stay safe everyone, the Galerinas are lurking

This is the best way I have found too, no one really mentions it that much, subs are very woody, even water logged they will still have some rigidity to them. Galerinas and subs will grow together as well which can sometimes make it hard to tell what is what especially if the subs are getting old.

That's a good point about when they're wet! I find that even when wet they're still a hell of a lot more robust than other mushies. They also seem to have a more elastic nature when wet.

Another thing I've noticed is that the blue bruising isn't that prominent when  wet, and immediately after picking they may not even bruise. Once they get a chance to dry a tad the blue bruising then starts to show.

I noticed this in the early stages of my  hunting career after picking wet subs... they wouldnt bruise. I was like 'wtf', then thought I'll take them home and identify them anyway. Once I got home, the bruising had appeared and there was one very happy Funkahdelic human.

Woo hoo! What a great Fkn season! I found my first one on the pipeline track in fern tree on March 23rd! Bloody unheard of! I’ve been getting a big hail every week, despite the parks restrictions.

Check out these I found in Neika this arvo! I’ve never seen anything like them. Growing in a huge patch in the open. Sorry for shitty photos, it was a bit dark at this stage...

LOL!!

Got a heap of mates who fly in once a year for a weekend of massive partying, so trying to get enough dried for 10 or so guys to have a BIG arvo/evening!!

Out of interest, does anyone know how long they take to sprout again after being picked?
Does it take a big rain event?
I've found a spot 40min drive away that is worth the drive if I find what I found there last time, but not if they haven't re-grown.

Hey guys, this is my first season pickin' and I've got a solid amount of lovely subs  I know the dosage changes from shroom to shroom but just wanted to know a rough estimate of how much to consume for a good trip if they're dried before I gobble down. Was thinking of grinding mine up and putting into caps so that the dose is consistent. Thanks

I find that it is completely dependent on environmental conditions. I generally aim for good rains. I can't be bothered to head out until the next decent rainfall to ensure the juiciest and freshest are on selection.

I like to grind my mushrooms for consumption but storage always in wholes. I find there is decent variation between individuals, but grinding helps to average out the potency. I can only fit 0.5g of pulverised material in a gel cap, but having one every 30 mins for 2 hours can get you somewhere beautiful :mushroom2: Eating them straight can also be a nice experience. Probably aim for around 1g and work up from there remembering the levels are not linear.

Does anyone else get the mushroom tetris effect after finding a few friends?

I'd say wait at least 2 weeks minimum.  Even if it doesn't rain, mushrooms will still grow (just slower).  This is due to micro climates and the dew and frost overnight that will still help water most mushrooms.

Here's some pictures back from 2016, the first was taken on the 9/4/16 and the last image was taken 2 and a half weeks later.  Same mushroom slowly growing (I went and took new pics ever 3-5 days).

A life of a Sub

So if I was you, i'd wait around 2 weeks between revisiting a particular patch

I always thought the same until today. I came across some really nice, fresh looking Gallerinas and when inspecting one I noticed it's stem was almost identical to a Sub's in terms of rigidity and how fibrous it was.
The only determining factor of the stem was it's annulus and lack of bluing.
This was a bit of a shock for me as I've always found Gallerina stems to be quite flimsy.

Is it just me or are they bloody potent?!

Have dried and ground all of what I have which has come to about 25g.
Last night I thought I take a little test sample, 3/4 of a teaspoon (about 1-1.5g I'm guessing) in hot water with a squeeze of lemon juice, no taste at all!
But bloody hell, was just on the verge of full on hallucinations.
Had to concentrate to move around, typing on the phone was almost impossible and rolling smokes a huge challenge!!

I have found on the odd occasion Galerina's that looked almost exactly like a sub (stem and cap), but what I find to always be the case is that the gills will have an orange tinge to them.  That for me is the main indicator besides the other ways to tell them apart.

Over the years that I've been on this site, the subject of potency has been discussed, and from memory Subs are quite potent compared to other active mushrooms, not the most potent but maybe in the top 5 (or close to) shrooms around the world if I remember correctly.  But it is also likely that it's you too, some people need more for a certain effect, others need less for the same effect.  Seems like you may be one of the lucky ones.

Never had cubes but friends have said subs blow them out of the water dose for dose. 5g of subs is enough to put you on a psychedelic rocket ride to the depths of the universe for 8 solid hours.  I did it twice in a month haven’t tripped since. Be careful with subs they are extremely potent.

Cheers for the great trip description

Another question for you all....found a fantastic spot today, around 200 grams wet along a 10m stretch of road with another 3km of similar terrain to explore later!!
The only issue this is a reasonably busy road, busy enough that a parks and wildlife vehicle went past and had a bit of a look at me.
Has anyone been approached by parks or police in Tas?
Do you just pick and don't care who sees or thinks what?

As far as I can tell the police don't really target hunters in Tas but I'm sure if they were bored and drove past they might stop for a chat :frown:

I have found a few close, especially if they have to grow through some ground coverings, but nothing quite that long

Season End Date? [Re: Zezima4eva]
    #26677242 - 05/17/20 04:36 PM (17 days, 16 hours ago)

Hey all,
Can anyone give me a rough end date for the season down here? It’s my first season of picking and I am having some awesome beginners luck that I don’t want to end ☺️

This is yesterday’s haul, featuring the biggest (had been albino before drying) sub I have come across so far!

Was also wanting some opinions on taking old, worn out shrooms. Found a couple of massive old monsters the other day that I decided to leave on the ground as I wasn’t sure if they would have lost their potency.

Thanks for any advice!

Those Were Still Potent. They Don't Just Lose All Their Potency From Maturing. The Active Levels May Drop A Tad Bit, But They'll Still Put You On Your Ass.

They May Contain Some Bacteria, From Growing In The Wild, Which May Or May Not Give You The Shits, But Making Tea Fixes That Problem.

Hello. I am a real newbie when it comes to mushrooms, myself finding it hard to even get focused and study them due to overwhelming anxiety/depression. I would be immensely grateful for anyone who can give a few tips on good places to look, and what to look for, in Tasmania.

Hi Tassie hunters,

New here, though I lurked online last year

Loving everyone's photos, so impressive!

I've been consistently finding small patches in my area around Hobart, found a patch of eight pin babies yesterday, I'll go back and get them after it rains.

I've just been drying them out on a sheet of newspaper, they are drying but not quite brittle dry yet. I've seen descriptions of other ways to dry on other threads, but can anyone tell me if it is a problem if I dry them this way? Seems ok, no mould, just very shrivelled...want to respect my lil magic friends and keep them potent.

Will be my first time trying subs, I am more familiar with cubensis. Looking forward to it.

Grateful this small community is here to chat with

I first tried drying mine in my ensuite under the IXL heater with the fan on and it wasn't fast enough.

Now I put on a piece of paper in front of a fan heater on it's lowest fan and heat settings.  They dry to a crisp in 6-8 hours, then I chop really fine and put in a glass jar with a teabag filled with salt to take anymore moisture out.

Hopefully this works as I need to save most of what I have until early next year

Apparently it's not a good idea to grind or chop them up if your planning to store them for quite some time (as it degrades the potency faster).
It's better to store the mushrooms whole and then chop/grind up when you need.

I've gotta take a picture or two, so I'll be back later with some pics of my drying and storage setup.

Oh ok, cheers.

Lucky I'm still finding them then!!

Got about 25g chopped and about the same drying.

I don't have the ability to freeze them so how would you store them for the long term?

Haha, the tetris effect is closed eye visuals of Tetris after playing too much. After a solid hunt, I get CEVs of their little golden tops, maybe I ingest a little bit by accident

If you want them to be good by early next year, it is worth investing in a cheap dehydrator and storing them whole with desiccant. Even with good preparation, some of my leftovers from last year smell a little funky.

I follow the below method and it’s extremely easy and cheap, though a little more involved than other methods. Making your own desiccant is definitely to way to go in my opinion! I add in one extra step where I pre dry them using a fan over night, then put them in a airtight container with desiccant for a week or so, then put in my stash jar also has a pouch of desiccant in it. They are all nice and cracker dry now!

On another note, added about twenty minutes to a walk I do most days and struck absolute gold!:

hey mate, whats the chances of bacteria when the mushrooms you pick are almost pretty much dried out from lack of rain?

Hello allegory.temple

Just letting them sit on some newspaper is not a good idea.  You need to ether use a fan or a food dehydrator to dry them asap and then store them asap in a air-tight container or jar,
*you'll need some damp-rid product too.

if you can, get a fan like this;

If you do use a fan, it will have to be drying the mushrooms consistently for at least 3-4 days.  After fan drying you'll need to put them in a airtight container*.
(*scroll down for more info (my reply to Rumblefish)

If you use a food dehydrator, just make sure you use the lowest heat settings.  the mushrooms should dry within 12 hours roughly (this depends on the size of the mushrooms you're drying),
then pop them into your storage container*.

Here's my very simple storage setup

All these things can be bought at Coles.  They should still sell that particular food container, and last I checked, they still sell the hippo (damp-rid).

Last year I had 2 of these containers full (one was only half full) containing over 200g of super dry shrooms, so there's heaps of room.
I'd suggest to all new hunters to get these things and then your storage problems will be problems no more .

Last thing is to just store the container in a cupboard or drawer out of the way, and I see no reason why they won't last a year or 2 easily :borat:.

Hi all.

Launceston based first season picker here. So far I’m having a good season finding a few 300-400g fresh bush patches and having a great time learning.

I have found a couple of smaller finds in mulch beds around town but nothing substantial.

I was wondering if suburban subs are a thing in launnie ?? I have covered a lot of mulched areas for no huge results so was thinking is it too early in the season ? Temps and moisture still not at optimal levels ??

I keep seeing these crazy finds in Melbourne in city mulch beds and think surely our climate is reasonably similar.

Advice from any northern hunters would be greatly appreciated.

That's awesome, cheers!!

Drying mine infront of a fan heater and they are super crispy after 2 nights.

Was then cutting them up really fine but apparently this can make them less potent, so will stop that for now.

Think I will just go straight from heater to container you mentioned as mine are very dry!!

My understanding is that Melbourne councils use just the right type of bark mulch for them to grow in, where as Tassie one's don't.

I used to live up north and the one spot we used to get heaps now has an electric fence around it.

If down here is anything to go by, you'd be amazed where they are.  I have found over 500g along side roads with mature Eucalyptus at sea level!!
Just keep looking for those micro climates, oh and they seem to grow where braken does!!

Great thanks so much for your tips. I need to get a better set up before picking more, though I am confident the ones that have been air drying are not lost! I've actually used a low heat hairdryer to move them along. I'm trying to be subtle and discreet from the people I live with, makes the whole thing a bit more difficult...

No id say thats bullshit. I doubt it has to do with using the right mulch, in a few odd cases that may be so. A good grade of woodchips i think would be key. You dont want bark but wood chips as well. Though they can grow on pine bark, albeit not well.

Melbourne is a big city, and from my gatherings they tend to use a lot of woodchips for landscaping, i would say the majority of their woodchips come from Gippsland where sub spores would get into the woodchips. I believe more often Melbourne councils lay woodchips thicker, and perhaps replenish them more often.

The key is that Melbourne has lots of spores cycling through the city and lots of established patches of subs on woodchips.

Tasmania and Victoria both share an Oceanic climate and Tas is further South so i dont think that has anything to do with it.

Areas that get some sun but not too much.  Also protected by from too much wind.
I have found them along the edge of a large area of bracken but walked all through the bracken and found none.
Needs to be reasonably wet but not too wet, eg. the ground seems to still be soft where I find them now, even though it hasn't rained for a week.

One area I have found heaps has tracks going NW/SE.  They are hardly never along the southern side of the tracks as this gets more sun and the soil is harder from being baked.
And finally, Eucalyptus foliage creating mulch is a winner too!!

When Picking Wild Mushrooms, It Is Important For One To Note That Wherever They Are Found Growing, There Are Likely Animals In The Area As Well.

A Deer/Other Animal Could Walk By & Piss All Over Them.

Someone Walking Down A Trail Could Stop To Take A Piss & Piss On Them Unknowingly.

Rats/Field Mice & Other Animals (That Usually Carry Bacteria) Could Nibble On Them.

There Are Hundreds Of Examples. Just Know That A Sun Dried Mushroom Has Been Out There For Awhile, Atleast 2 Days. The Longer They're Out There, The More Time Something Has To Mess With Them.
