Hey Guys!
First season picking here, pretty new to foraging and new to this forum but not new to shrooms . Went for a hunt today, found a couple potential subs but still waiting on spore prints. Anybody have any tips for a newbie? We have been looking in wooded areas with lots of pine needles and decaying wood on the ground but we haven’t really had any luck. Is it still too early to be looking? I know they grow in man made wood chip gardens as well but with the current situation we are a bit wary of poking around in suburban areas too often. Anyways we are in north east Tas, any advice or places we may want to check is greatly appreciated. Happy hunting

Found one walking last night. Was a productive day. Have 2 new spots I plan to hit which I expect to have to myself so hoping to take some pics of them growing if I get lucky.
@alutacea that’s awesome mate. I’ll be hunting for them soon too. Actually I’m surprised they are out already.

Very happy with them as my first active find, I basically stumbled across them when checking out potential Sub grounds. I have just ingested 15 caps which I’ve been assured is a very small dose so I’ll see how that goes. Any Alutacea experience advise would be great
Now to find those elusive Subs up North. Any finds from up this way yet ??

A day and a half of searching around South Hobart and it's hills was pretty fruitless
Found this one beside a fire trail at 260m elevation, but that was it.

First time picker, havent had any luck finding and subs yet
Anyone had any experiences with Gymopilus around Tasmania?
I'm fairly certain I've seen a bunch of them and might put up an ID REQUEST tomorrow if people think they're worthwhile.

When you say “north” do you mean Launceston areas ? If so were they in mulched garden beds ?

Newbie here. I've been trying to look locally around my city for a few days due to restrictions. What are my chances of finding some psilocybe mushrooms around the Launceston Gorge or surrounding areas?
If anyone thinks they can help me in the area, I'm pretty desperate so private message me if you prefer.
Thank you.

If I can give you any tips, check each mushroom you find for holes in the cap and around the base of the cap and the stem for holes, if there are holes the mushroom most likely has bugs in it. Open up an old one and see for yourself, since I learnt this trick I haven’t vomited on shrooms! Happy hunting, we’re finding lots in the south! Keep an eye out for moss on the ground, especially peat moss, we find lots under small ferns and amongst dead/ decaying wood. Happy hunting!

Hello bonkestrudes
When I started hunting many years ago I started looking around the Launceston Gorge area but was unable to find any. But as there is a lot of bush land around the gorge, there's a good chance that you could find some. As you walk around Launceston keep an eye open for any woodchip beds (parks and some walking tracks) as magic mushrooms love woodchips and they can grow like crazy in woodchip beds.
I've noticed that scattered around Launceston there are little reserves that could potentially have magic mushrooms growing in those areas. The two first things I would do if I was you would be to go back over previous season threads, Victoria seems to have most post per season so I'd checkout around 2010 - 2015 season threads. Go through from page 1 right to the end. This is a great way to see many pictures of subs (magic mushrooms) and also as people occasionally post great advice within these threads, it's a great opportunity to learn a lot.
And second is to just get out there and start looking around. You'd be surprised just how they don't need a large area to start fruiting and you could be driving/walking straight pass them. I'd also suggest that you bring a camera if you are able to. When taking photos it looks a little less suspicious when looking for mushrooms.
Next, be aware of impostors (looks like a magic mushroom but isn't). here's some picture of subs beside some impostors. (The one on the left is not a magic mushroom but a type of mushroom that can really stuff your internal organs if eaten)

And

Tas75 said: Some Galerina patagonica I saw yesterday growing a few cm away from Psilocybe subaeruginosa:

If you're thinking about eating some subs, learning the difference could save your life. From the top they are almost identical to some populations of subs growing in grass in the open. They seem to be less common than subs, but I see them every autumn in wet forest.
So the main thing to remember is to learn as much as you can about subs and to take spore prints and make id post for any and all mushrooms that you think might be an active (magic mushrooms) for the first few years until you become very confident to know what is a sub and what isn't.
Also, checkout this thread https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/16164170#16164170 It contains pictures of habitats where subs (magic mushrooms) were found.
I hope that helps you and any other new members

not sure if this is appropriate for this thread but was just wondering if one of the more experienced people that frequent the tassy forum, blessed or obtuse looking at you, know of any good books regarding Tasmanian mycology? like field guides or just anything really relating to tas in particular?
