I know WBS, brown rice flour, rye, and oats, etc are good grains to use for colonizing myc. However, what ingredients do well? If I was interested in trying out other mediums, what would I look for in a medium? Do all rice flours work? If not, what is missing? I am curious with experimenting with different flours, rices, grains, etc. Where can I go to find out what combo of things that myc will take hold to?

Basically everything(vegetable cellulose) .I am not joking. I have grown cubes on paper. I have grown cubes in a Cedar mix . I have grown cubes on Pasta. Spent butane cannabis, random weeds from my back yard, grass, seaweed,(30%) coffee, so many things... just vermiculite. It grows on anything you get to the correct water content.

So is it really just moisture when it comes down to it?

It's the right amount of moisture. Some grains hold it some don't.
Rye grass seed Brown rice Whole oats Rye berries Wheat berries WBS Safflower seed black oil sunflower seed Barley Deer corn Popcorn Lentiles Nijar seeds Grass clippings Cigarette Butts and coffee. (TL did it)
Sometimes you got to get creative, I'm working with Safflower Seeds and Black Oil Sunflower Seeds cause it's what is around in my area. But also I like the shake ability of the harder grains and seeds. I have no idea how it fruits, haven't gotten that far yet. But I love that it's like shaking little rocks in a jar. Easier than brakeing up oats.

Like Ed said, Millet boiled with gypsum is the industry standard. Lost of people have had problems with oats due to a specific bacteria that resides between the germ and the Hull, although I’ve used solely oats for a while now.
If you can find Millet (which is the main grain in wild bird seed) that’ll be our best bet.
