Why do I do things?
    #26523690 - 03/08/20 10:13 AM (3 years, 11 months ago)

Yesterday I took 2.5g or so of shrooms. Great long trip, slowly merged into many many bowls. During the trip, I had a lot of introspection. One thing I realized and is affirmed by the people around me is that there are certain social things that I just don't do. The weird part is that I got really understand why people do it. It always very mundane tasks as well, like texting a friend just to text a friend. I don't think it's a big deal and I do think it's pretty common. I just do think it affects creating long term friendships. I definitely don't have any negative feelings about it, I'm just curious.

I'm wondering what are things people do, that they don't understand why?
There doesn't need to be even any attempt for the reasoning of these things I just wonder about other people.

I am similar. It doesn’t seem at all natural for me to call or text people, especially if I will see them within a month or two. I am 40 yrs old and only recently am trying to call my parents once and awhile. They are the same way.... months could go by without a call or text.

I don’t really have answers for you, but I might try to reorient your quandary a bit.

You are asking why we do things we do.

But, it seems more that it is a lack of doing a thing that you are talking about, namely, staying in contact with others. I have to remind and force myself to do it. For the longest time, I just assumed it was “just the way I am, the way I was raised” now I realize that being able to maintain contact with people over time and distance is valuable and advantageous to me. My personal feeling plays much less of a part now, or at least they are put aside for higher goals. Such as trying to achieve and maintain relationships with the people who I care about.

You don’t have to text to pursue deeper relationships, but if that’s what the people you want to connect with are doing, it sure helps to learn how to do it.

Different personality types generally employ different strategies. Not sure what you mean by not understanding why? I think there's always some logic to things done even if based off feelings. I suppose to a degree everything we do have some feeling involved.

You make a good point. I suppose it doesn't apply just to texting, more just maintaining relationships overall. I mentioned it to a good friend today he understood. It's not that I don't want to, these are more things I don't even think of.

I would be impressed if there were any simple "why's" to anything people do.

to me it seems that we learn routines out of repetition which develops into habits.

what triggers the habits ranges from simple stimulus  to complex intellectual determination of what would be suitable (an overriding attitude).
sometimes the modus operandum is a non-participation habit or a habit of not doing what is common or expected. Different kinds of personal history can lead to opt out mentality.

To answer your question better you need to study experimental psychology; you would have to learn how to make your question more precise and then design and execute experimental data collection to derive your answers.

Following my second trip continued to reflect upon how I act and how people act towards me. There have been a few things that people have told me that give me a better idea. Thanks, I'll be working on this.

I'm fascinated by the fact we often choose to do things we know cause ourselves (and others) pain and suffering.

It's really interesting. I suppose at it's most basic level it comes down to survival and want. Nowadays people seek more a just survival, or even in some cases redefine it altogether. Something I wonder is "Why do people choose themselves over others?"

'Coz you wanna'

Is the first thought. But it's simple and complex.

Humans are like computers, but also organic. They have infinite shades of variety, everywhere from 1 to 100 so to speak. (Of course that's simplistic.)

We have quantum brains.

Do YOU really wanna do stuff? Or is your mind sending you message requests to engage in certain behaviors?

.  A related question is : I'm wondering what are things people do, that they don't know they are doing? Fidgeting being an example, or simply shifting position, more often than necessary.
.  This is partly done out of a habit of avoiding that which is uncomfortable. As it is not pleasant to be aware of how avoidant one is or of how uncomfortable just being 'in' a body often is.
.  This constant shifting is what might be called "semi-conscious". It is obviously not unconscious in the Freudian sense of repression, but also is so ignored as to be outside of fully conscious choice.
.  Careful observation of people will confirm this. Of course during the current social distancing opportunities for observing this may be much more limited.
