Can I copy my whole system to CD-Rs?
    #2653966 - 05/08/04 05:40 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

I'm getting rid of the computer I am using now and buying a new one. Is there a way I can transfer everything (including "my favorites") from this computer to the new one, using CD-Rs? I want to copy everything that I have downloaded/installed on this computer since I bought it. The new computer will already have an os, so I won't need that.

This computer runs windows xp and the new one will too.

Can you wait until you get your new one, connect them both to a LAN and transfer the files over the network? It'll save a lot of time.

Don't copy EVERYTHING.

You will have to sacrifice all your installed programs, don't try to copy them or you'll end up with a huge mess. But you can save your profiles and customization for all of them.

I'm not sure where IE stores My Favorites, but I believe it's just that My Favorites folder. Yes you can make a copy of that.

Without saying, you can save all your music and videos. You can also save any loose data (uninstalled stuff) including documents, articles, etc.

Good luck. I for one would just keep the HDD's (unless they are slow and unweildy) or just get a big 80GB enclosure to backup the data. If you haven't a backup HDD (external, preferabbly) you will realize the pain of losing all the data you've been gathering for X amount of years. So get one now!

Yes, you can export all your bookmarks in IE using the import and export option in your file menu. You can also save all the installation programs as well, but you can't just transplant your entire HD content onto another.

just best to start over and re-download everything but favorites for IE. Some if not all programs have files that go into the windows system and it is very hard to locate tham. Best bet is to download them again and save them to a cd-r...
