Idol Worship! Idol Worship!
    #26539058 - 03/16/20 05:08 PM (3 years, 10 months ago)

so there's a statue of a Buddhist Monk I want, it was made around 1900 and it's Burmese, Beautiful, and I bought my friend a Nataraja/Dacing Shiva Statue for Christmas, he loves it and was wanting one for awhile, however i've got a problem, it's the second commmandment:

Quote:

Exodus: 20:4

You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, punishing children for the iniquity of parents, to the third and the fourth generation of those who reject me, 6 but showing steadfast love to the thousandth generation of those who love me and keep my commandments.

why am I so lustful for a buddhist statue that reminds me as a symbol of Faith and Peace? I see the four immeasurables taught in Buddhist litarature:

Quote:

1: Immeasurable Loving-Kindness
2: Immeasurable Compassion
3: Immeasurable Altruistic (Sympathetic) Joy
4; Immeasurable Equanimity

I don't know if I should buy this statue, it cost $400 and is one of the most beautiful statues I've ever seen, I already got a couple buddha statue's here at home, I don't worship them, but they cool looking and bring me Peace, are'nt they by nature made for humans to be naturally attracted to sacred statues and symbols? and why can't I say thank you to a symbol for representing Good/God? light some incence and relax, meditate, praise God?

Why does such a devout Christian have a Hindu quote in his sig, ya know?

I identify with the Christian title because where the name came about in the story in the Book of Acts, but that's just by natural definition of what I believe basically happened back than, why title yourself as anything? does'nt that just breed conflict and antagonism?

I Don't see how this could be considered trolling, it's an honest question going on in my life, are you high?

Oh so very high

But that’s besides the point.
If you follow the 10 commandments, you’re a pretty devout Christian. Doesn’t mean you can’t also be other things. It’s not so much “labeling” you as it is “defining”, if that makes any sense...

I think Sri Aurobindo got it right. There’s something to gain from the teachings of every religion. Integrated Yoga draws heavily from Biblical ideas.

And that's sorta the way I see it, integration, like a giant puzzle, the Bible has legends that the Garden of Eden was in the east, i'm thinking India!

IDOLATER!
INFIDEL!

Seriously though, would the idol distract you away from the glory of God, the Formless One, or guide you towards it?

Well, here's something i'm thinking about, if I take a Giant crap that hurts my asshole I feel unclean and embarrassed before God (distant, away), but a lovely statue of Buddha makes me feel peaceful, reflecting a unspoken sacredness, though is just a peice of art, it makes me feel clean and confident (close, near), what's so wrong with art? that aspect is clean, but i'm also partly attracted to honoring the aspects is symbololizes (a mature, intelligent loving peaceful human being), I think i'm getting use to the idea of getting it,,,let's wait on Saved7 response though!

That big poo is an aspect of God too. You can be as close to God doing a poo as praying at an altar if you have the right mindset.

Also, how do you know the monk was a mature, intelligent, loving peaceful human being? He could have been a piece of shit murdering tyrant for all you know. Don't judge a book by its cover.

True taking a crap, God is there, but it's even the mundane seperated by the sacred that I get conflict or distance I guess.

the monk has no name or may have a name, it's what it symbolizes, I guess your questioning who the mold of the statue is made after? or who was the one to made the statue at all? it's burmese so it probably was a Muslim hating begot, sad to say, but it means something different to me, like an Edgar Degas painting of ballerinas, he was a Jew hating asshole, but what a stroke of the brush!

our rational mind may not accept this but there is a way of putting a living consciousness into an idol/statue:

By Sri Aurobindo

The Stone Goddess

Quote:

In a town of gods, housed in a little shrine,
From sculptured limbs the Godhead looked at me, —
A living Presence deathless and divine,
A Form that harboured all infinity.

The great World-Mother and her mighty will
Inhabited the earth’s abysmal sleep,
Voiceless, omnipotent, inscrutable,
Mute in the desert and the sky and deep.

Now veiled with mind she dwells and speaks no word,
Voiceless, inscrutable, omniscient,
Hiding until our soul has seen, has heard
The secret of her strange embodiment,

One in the worshipper and the immobile shape,
A beauty and mystery flesh or stone can drape.

I don't see God in this statue I'm thinking about getting, I see a symbolic sign of a mature Man, the best Human Being you can be, stirve for it, and honor it in another,,,as far as there being Consciousness in the statue, or in anyway inhabiting it, that's a bonus!

My opinion if it makes you feel good get it! just dont worship it like its go and nothing else is. My beilef is that all religions have truth in them and i have said this alot lately but they are each part of a story no reason you cant takes things from different religions and make them your own. At least for me my connection with the creator and the rest of the creation is a personal thing and i think each person has to find there own way and their own relationship with god.

So until recently i thought altars and stuff like that was a lil creepy but recently put a shiva statue surrounded by some pyramid shaped crystals and made kind of a altar. I did this on my dresser wich has a mirror behind the shiva and crystals. i didnt even think about the mirror at all..lets say a little birdie told me the most important part of that space is the mirror and not to forget that god is in everything including me. Thats important i dont think we should get caught up in "worshiping" a idol or statue because we have everything we need already inside of us but i see nothing wrong with having some statues around if it makes you feel peacefull GO FOR IT! just remember there is NOTHING sacred in that statue that isnt already part of YOU!

I think the bible needs to be taken maybe less literally.  When they speak of "false idols", they don't mean statues of gods or prophets.  False idols can be anything that you're obsessed with instead of God.  Money, power, drugs, etc.  It doesn't mean you can't use any of these things, just that you don't "worship" them in the sense of the drug addict seeking his salvation through a constant fix, the greedy one in power seeking constantly to protect his fortune, etc.

That's my interpretation.

God asked me to choose a God Symbol to use as a central altar piece, with the strict instruction that it was, of course, about GOD and not about the SYMBOL.

I chose a 8cm sphere of Shungite, which is 2 billion year old fossilized carbon of microbial origin.

Fossilized early life, as a hommage to life.
Fossilized carbon, to honor the main building block of DNA lifeforms
A sphere, because it is only One, Formless.
a black sphere, such as a black hole, and a universe from the outside
8 centimeters of carbon because it has a special meaning in my spirituality.

So, a black sphere of 2 billion years old life.

God ewanted a central altar piece to symbolically represent Him.

He was pleased.

its not about the piece it self its what it represents and how you treat it.
