Jar Question
    #2653914 - 05/08/04 03:26 PM (20 years, 8 months ago)

I have just bought 10 1/2 pint glass jars with plastic snap on lids... will these jars be ok? I will put tinfoil around the top area to seal it but If these jars do seal perfectly wouldn't that create a vacuum inside the jar which would suck contams inside when I opened them? Which is not desireable to say the least.

I have been slowly collecting together all the stuff needed for the past few months and my syringe arrives in a few days so I can finally start... not going to leave anything to chance

It would be alot easier and safer(less chance of contams)if you just got the right jars,as Domey said,.
If you start cutting corners now,you are doomed to fail later.
Not wishing you bad luck or anything, just giving advice!

you could just leave the lids off completely and use foil as if they were drinking glasses.I have used glasses with a foil lid before and it worked great, same thing.Just buy real reynolds wrap,so its heavy duty foil.cut a bunch of squares, cover the jar with one and smooth down. Now put a rubberband around it to hold it down. Then place another square and do the same thing. Then when they are done, just remove the top piece of foil, carefully without loosing its shape, innoculate through the layer of foil thats left and place the top piece back on looser than before without the rubber band..There you go,it will work fine.Just be as sterile as you can and your golden.just be careful not to rip the foil, thats why heavy foil is important, dont get cheap.

Butternut squash are softer than acorn or other types of squash, which makes them easier to cut and prepare.

You dont have to worry about a vacuum seal if you use breathable tape over your innoc holes

I live in the UK and it's very hard to get the correct jars, I was lucky enough to find un shouldered glass jars. I think I will try the tin foil method.. thanks Butternut
