I find that 3-5 plants in a 20-25 gallon container works alright as long as you space the plants as far away from each other in the container as possible. All my poppies are growing fast with the arrival of warm weather.

Is Papaver somniferum var. album the only one with white seeds?

Yes, the classification of var. album vs var. nigrum is based entirely on the color of the seeds and not the color of the flowers AFAIK.

I see. I cannot find any other varieties of Album besides " Peshwar". I read poppies will cross pollinate, Can album and Nigrum cross? I cannot find any info on crossing poppies on the net.

Yeah, all p som will cross and you can get some crazy flowers by crossing different varieties. Peshawar just refers to a locality where there are many different poppy cultivars grown, so I'm not sure if my peshawar is the same as yours etc. I know there was a pink peshawar poppy going around a while ago. There are surely thousands of different var. album local landraces and cultivars grown around the world, Turkey for example is a hotspot of poppy diversity and has hundreds of different var. album cultivars and landraces that differ by morphology and alkaloid composition. The vast majority of poppy cultivars are industrial varieties which is why they are seldom heard of, most hobbyists work with common ornamental cultivars like danish flag for example.

I'm gonna post some pics of my poppies that I've started in peat pots to place outside when the time comes to work the soil up.

Cool thread! Here are some Papaver somniferum, some Papaver orientale, and some Eschscholzia californica, that I started indoors. I also have a few outdoor beds as well, but they are mixed in with dozens of types of wildflowers. These will eventually all go in a bed all to their own very soon!

Cool, i would like to see how the transplants go. I was going to start some of mine indoors but directly sowed them instead. It has been over a week and noting has popped yet.

Mine outdoors finally popped! We have had so much rain, I thought that they would all wash away! I'll keep updating these, as I wont feel comfortable putting these out until next month. They are growing quite well under a cheap four foot LED shop-light, surprisingly!

You were able to get somniferum seeds to germinate indoors? What sort of temperatures?
I always figured it'd be a bit too warm for them to germinate indoors. In my experience so far, once soil temps are "warm", basically beyond 60f or so, no seeds will germinate for me.
Have you transplanted somniferums before?...They are known for having pretty delicate roots and being super sensitive to transplanting, everything I've read says to not transplant and to sow them directly where they will be grown since transplanting is usually not successful....I'm curious how you go about transplanting them? Are you just super gentle with them or do you have a certain technique?
Glad to see this thread going...I was thinking about starting a poppy thread before I saw this one.

Yeah, that is a myth that poppy seeds wont germinate in warm conditions. Mine germinated at around 75 degrees or so.
I actually once made some poppy seed tea with really hot water. after I was done with the seeds, I just tossed them all in my compost bin. well, much to my surprise, and about a week later, I had thousands upon thousands of poppy sprouts! this was also in mid summer with temps outside in the high 80's.
As far as Transplanting goes, These are actually transplants. I started up a big old tray of them. After they germinated, and got their first set of leaves, I gently plucked them out with a toothpick, and put them in individual containers.
Poppies being hard to transplant is also a myth. As poppies age they become harder to transplant, but not impossible. The best time to do it, is when they're young. Older plants can be transplanted as well, but it's much harder. If you get the main tap root, and most of smaller roots, get them in their new spot, and watered immediately, the success rate can be pretty decent

They won't germinate for me at all once it is "warm" outside and once soil temps are past about 60f or so.
Last year I had lots of seeds germinate...then I sowed some about just a week or two later, it was a bit warmer outside at that point and none of those germinated...So I sowed some more, none of those germinated.
I gave some seed to a friend around that same time...he lives a bit farther north than me but in pretty much the same climate, and he too could not get any to germinate.
He and I both kept tossing seeds out through out spring and nothing was happening...while just a couple weeks before it started to get warm outside the seeds germinated for me just fine with high rates.
Same thing has happened to me this year too....Had lots germinate back in January, very high germination rates within 2 weeks after sowing, but through out February it was unseasonably warm in my area and the seeds I sowed in February had much much lower germination rates.
Maybe certain varieties are more sensitive to temps? ...but so far from my little bit of experience with this plant, I can not get them to pop open once it is "warm" outside (roughly 75f+) and once the soil is "warm" (roughly 60f+) ....but while it is cool out (30s & 40s at night & 50s & 60s during the day) they germinate just fine for me within about 10 days.
I just sow directly where they're going to be grown...but I'll have to play around with transplanting next year just to see if I can successfully do it lol.

It could be dependent on what type of variety you're working with, but I have always been able to germinate seeds indoors or out with warmth no matter the type.
For the past few years, I have just thrown my seeds out in February, and let them do their thing, but this year I planted tons of wildflowers in their spot too with them. So, just in case the wildflowers overtake my poppies, I did a few indoors so I least get some nice mature plants for more seed.
They are going to all get their own area, spaced for maximum growth potential

You need to try out the McCormick brand poppy seeds in the spice isle at the grocery ;-) They end up producing huge multi podded plants with that typical Tasmanian style flower! They actually turn out looking just like what namaste posted.

Here are just a few of my poppy plots around the yard. This season I've ditched all my ornamental cultivars and gone with Turkish white (genuine turkish import) Khandahar afghan (genuine afghan import from khandahar province) Turkish red Peshawar
