Post harvest technique (Leftover stalks and stuff.)
    #26538396 - 03/16/20 11:15 AM (3 years, 10 months ago)

This is my first harvest. How does my substrate look? Do I leave the little  mushrooms like you see?
What about the leftover chunks? Cut them out? Any tips?

Also, I’ve read some people don’t mist or dunk at all for some time after harvesting. Thoughts on that?

Are you going to clean the coco coir from the butts of the fruits? I am always anal about that lol.

Personally, for harvesting, I just use a pocket knife/precision cutter and cut the fruits as close to the sub as possible. The cut stems in the tub side bruise blue and then get reclaimed by wispy myc eventually unless they get trichy.

I've been gathering the aborts as well because why not. But I see how people running a very large scale project wouldn't want to spend time harvesting small aborted shrooms. If you're not sure which one is an abort and which one is a live pin, just let them be and the abort will turn darker and generally develop a blue ring around the stem below the cap. Their odd shape also gives them away.

Nice harvest btw!!

I would pick them all. Most of the little ones will abort. It has been said that the aborts are more potent
than mature ones. Clean off the surface as well as you can and dunk the cake for a second flush.
Good work!

As far as dunking, I found out recently just how much I was shooting myself in the foot with dunking for a 2nd flush.  Just a heavy mist after harvest and atsa wrap.  Faster pinning and more pins on the 2nd and 3rd flushes IMO.  Helps to keep the nasties at bay as well not having a soggy mass of sub sittting around a cool, dark house.

Thanks guys I’m pretty happy with it. I can’t believe how much you can get from one small tub. What do you mean by clean the surface? I read some people leave some of the chunks and mycelium grows over it.

Ya I read some people just mist it. I wonder why it works better, for some people atleast. The only thing I’m worried about is the chunks left over, but like I said some people let them be.m
And yes I’m going to clean the coco off hehe.  I feel you about being anal about it. My first harvest so I’m just pumped anyways!!

Really, what problems have you encountered? I have been doing a second flush dunk for years and never
had a problem with it. I don't soak the cake for more than half an hour. I found out about dunking by accident
when I took my fruiting chamber to a friend to babysit my grow while I was going out of town, and the cakes fell
over into the perlite and soaked in the water for the 30 minutes that it took to get to his house.

I dunked for years too.  My biggest thing about dunking is that it leaves the sub too wet, and I get 2nd flush pins sooner (and they flush heavier) it would seem when I just give a good spray.  Wouldn't have mattered in some other places I lived, but with my indoor temps so low, I have to treat my subs diffferently.  That said, the boxes I keep at a friend's house (MUCH more climate controlled) have been reacting well to just misting as well.  Quick and easy.  No reason to dunk a sub overnight (as I see reccomended in older literature).  Mist that bugger and stick the lid back on.  Just my 2 cents.  You mention cakes.  I do dunk cakes for a while when I fruit them as cakes.  Almost never fruit whole cakes, but often they benefit from a 6-8hr dunk IME in between flushes.  Started taking single cakes and chucking them  in old Kimchi and Kraut containers though with a little coir/verm, which get misted in between flushes...

Dunking gave me waterlogged flushes too.

I usually soak with the mister after the first flush and then after second flush  add enough water to keep the bottom inch of so of the sub submerged for 40-60 mins, drain and spray the surface with the mister again.

Op those little ones are aborts. I usually try to pick them off and usually save them but they start to get pretty gross sometimes during the second flush when they rot.

So you think I should pick everything? Also what’s your opinion on some leftover chunks in the sub? I got most of it but don’t want to destroy my sub getting it all. I read some people leave it and it’s fine?

Pick everything.  As was nentioned, they usually just turn out to be aborts.  Harvest it all at one time.  I just make tea out of the little peeners from my boxes.  There'll be more.  The stumps will be covered with myc and will be fine.

Yeah stumps are ok, and usually aborts are too but the only times I’ve seen contams besides trich it seems to start on aborts or stumps where a piece of the stem peeled off when I picked it.

Short smooth cut stumps just dry out but aborts or taller stumps start to turn into slime and seem to be mold magnets.

I’ve read people having better success doing..

1. Waiting a few days before wetting the substrate

2. Misting instead of dunking.

Thoughts?

I also was told to pick aborts, but what if some of them are genuinely growing? Can I wait a day to see if they grow at all? I don’t want to goof this up.

If they are growing they are not aborts.

Do what feels right for you. It's all about what works for your situation.

Ok thanks I’ll see if they’re still growing.

And I didn’t weigh it yet. I should’ve checked the wet weight. I have them in front of a fan now, I harvested a little late so spores got them looking dirty. Here’s a pic

And I’m excited because I have another that’s very similar harvest weight about read, and 5 more that are going to be pinning any day. Have like 10 agar plates looking great, very cool.
