Question about FAE
#26538440 - 03/16/20 11:45 AM (3 years, 10 months ago) |

Ok so my mushroom were getting fuzzy bases, which ive heard is caused by not enough FAE. Im using a 64qt tub with 6 2in holes filled with polyfill(not very tight either) Holes are 5in above substrate surface. Anyways i took the lid completely off for a few hrs a day (My room is sterile) But mushrooms still had fuzzy bases, even with no lid on. So my question is this- Even if you have enough FAE holes is it not enough if the air around the tub is still? Do you need flowing air around the tub? A fan next to tub perhaps? Because i dont understand why im having FAE problems with OPEN air. The only thing i can think of is that the air is so still(no fan, no AC) that even with the lid open its not enough "exchange" going on. Do you all think thats whats up? Plus my mushrooms veils are opening when mushrooms are only an inch to 2 in tall with caps the size of a dime. Theyre Golden Teachers by the way.

Sometimes fuzz is genetic, nothing you can do but peel it off at harvest.

A room with still air isn’t allowing FAE. It’s allowing GE. You should have a fan going in your fruiting room if you don’t want to manually fan a few times a day. FAE is a great way to fight contams such as mold from settling into your tubs as well.

There’s a good chance that none of this has anything to do with FAE at all as it seems you have plenty of FAE... most people just flip a lid or have holes like yours and are fine...

Also I’m not sure if you meant this, but the air in your room definitely isn’t sterile... what did u mean?

Spunky is right. The air is definitely not sterile, which doesn’t matter anyways for fruiting. I fruit in a makeshift room in my basement and don’t have problems, because there’s plenty of FAE. And the fuzzy stems can just be genetics. Post a picture of them and we can help more.

Too much polyfil and your holes are way too high up. They should be right at substrate level. Did you use a casing layer?

I used a thin layer, maybe 1/4 in. It was same as substrate, coco/verm mix

That’s not a casing layer. That’s substrate and you’re asking for contams for using it as a casing layer. Jiffy Mix is what most of us use for a casing layer.

Why would it cause contams?

Because it’s food for mycelium. If it’s food for mycelium, it’s food for contams.

They are calling it a top layer now. Apparently once the CV colonizes we are adding in a new layer of CV on top. I kinda think it is the same as straight verm in grow kits. I was thinking of running an experiment to see which works better.
But I got all these bags of jiffy just laying around.

No need to case cubes anyways. I’ve never cased and never had a problem with producing monster flushes.

top layers make the myc look purdy. definitely not a casing tho and definitely not necessary. although I tend to notice better pinsets when using them. probably due to the surface conditions they provide. I like to put on a thick one so I can mist the shit out of it without harming the grains

I feel the same way and do the same thing! I don't like to create inconsistent moisture in the grains, but love casing so I can spray the shit out of it.
Also, casing draws the water back upwards, facilitating evaporation.
