ID help (nonactive)
    #26535425 - 03/14/20 07:33 PM (3 years, 10 months ago)

Hey guys
Was contacted because an inexperienced hunter harvested and attempted to consume this mushroom. I was wondering if anyone could give me any ideas with my limited information.

He said the mushroom tasted bad and he couldnt even eat much. (Subjective info)

Thanks in advance for any input.

I feel comfortable calling that an oyster.

Did it have a fishy, licorice, or seafood smell to it?

I highly doubt it was an oyster, as those are quite palatable whether raw or cooked.

More importantly, the grain of the cap implies the location of the stipe is in the middle, not indicative of the shape of the gills of an oyster.

Shooting in the dark, I would guess a russula variety.

Uhhhhhh yes, oysters can infact grow a center stipe.... reference? Years of growing and harvesting them.

How about we leave race out all together since it has absolutely nothing to do with mushrooms.

I agree Pleurotus is more likely,  definitely not a Russula since they do not grow on wood but are terrestrial. Please include pictures of the underside of your mushrooms when requesting an identification.  The cap surface, gills where the stem connects to the cap, the stem including the stem base are all important parts of the identification process so If we can't see them someone can miss something.  In situ photos are also helpful, using a shade to photograph mushrooms will help give better pictures and learning to adjust the white balance and lighting will allow you to take clear pictures of white mushrooms showing more characteristics.

It’s from a movie, the Big Lebowski.
