Slow colonization

Hey guys so I started these APE jars on the 2nd of this month and I feel like the colonization is just so slow. Jars were made with oats and everything looks and seems healthy just really slow I shook a few days ago and the mycelium is definitely spread out allot more now before it was only on the tops and a big chunk in the middle. They recovered well but I feel as if a LC inoculated jar should be allot further along at day 13. Any opinions? Any help is greatly appreciated!

Those jars do not look healthy. Especially the far left one closest to the camera. Leave your jars alone until you’re around 30%-40% colonized then shake very well. And when we say shake. We mean bang the shit outta them. LC’s are very hard to identify contams in, so you may not know what’s in it until you inoculate.

What looks unhealthy? Idk if it’s just from the camera because in person they are fluffy/rizomorphic in every patch it’s growing in. This is my first attempt at PE I started GT jars a day before and their ready to go into tubs tomorrow. I plan on building a flow hood to retry agar, I didn’t do well in a SAB it just felt so claustrophobic and had a tough time with sterile procedure in there. Are these jars goners or is there still hope?

Look at the bottom of the one on the left.
The myc is thick, it looks wet and the grains are bare in the middle. Those are the main signs of bacteria usually. If they colonize all the way they might work but ape takes a long time so that lowers the odds a little.
Are they ape or pesa?

The one I questioned has spotted growth around the mycelium growth, which typically indicates mold or bacteria. Buy a larger tote make sure it’s very tall. Check out my tek in my journal for an SAB. They do get tight at times. Especially when i’m doing a G2G with 14 jars in the box. You won’t know if the jars are fucked until a bit later, but that slow of colonization is not a good sign. How’d you prep your grains, as far as soak and boil? Are your jars being exposed to 12/12 lighting? What’s the temp?

I did a 45 minute boil- let oats dry for about 4-6 hours (past grains always were too wet if only left for an hr)- loaded into jars- pc for 2 hours. I prepped enough to do 7 jars of PE and 10 of a previously tested GT culture (started pinning yesterday actually) so it’s definitely not the grain prep. I have had some problems with bacteria but at some points in the colonization process my reptile/ grow room hit up to 90 in jars. The GTs always have pulled through though. And you said the one on the left? I’ll post a better picture of just that one so I can see where you mean. I will add you and check out the journal too!!

You never soaked? That’s your issues. Your grains are dry. We boil to get them perfect and dry the exterior quicker. Just cuz something works once. Does not mean it will work all the time. Soak your grains w/ gypsum and a touch of coffee PC time sounds ok. Are you making sure to run it without the toggle wait until the water on top boils off in 3-5 seconds? Add me to what? I’m already here in your thread please. I don’t need it.

Ok I won’t. I just used bodhis no soak oat prep tek from the easy af list. I will for sure check out your prep tek I was just reading your “how I do things” list/ journal, the cigarette butt thing is awesome! Let me check out your oat prep I’ll start trying some other stuff I’ve just kinda stuck with the simplest ways to do stuff but I’m starting to get a little bit more experience and I feel like experimenting would definitely be a good thing in this hobby.

I let the pc steam without weight for 10 minutes before I bring up to 15 psi for 2 hours. Basically I have followed bods teks since I’ve started getting into this hobby and that’s about it tbh.

Short cuts will get you nowhere in this hobby. You should make sure that it’s only steam leaving the toggle weight valve before placing it on the PC. It actually will be at 1-2 PSI before placing the weight

Ok so next time I will make sure that the psi is starting to climb before placing the weight on. I use a presto 23 and I have just now really got it working to the point where I don’t run dry. Like I said I’m still a noob

Do you also have a different oat tek that I could use? What’s your preferred grain to use? I like the oats strictly for how cheap they are. Never tried wbs since there are so many brands and idk what one to use.

Most read that water touching the bottom of the jars in the PC is bad. It’s not. Think about it. Your jars are being covered in a steam blanket. What is water going to do at the bottom of your jars? Nothing. Put a little bit more water in your PC; and don’t worry. I put 2 quarts in my AA930, and it uses around 2 cups for a 130-140 minute run. I bleed the thing causing steam for about 5 minutes beyond the time I see full steam coming out of it. I’m not sure what you mean by “oat,” as I only use whole grains. Rye berries or WBS. I’ve messed with corn, but it sucks. And never tried wheat. I stick with what I know works for me.
