Smaller mushrooms on first flushes BIG ones on subsequent flushes
    #26536304 - 03/15/20 09:56 AM (3 years, 10 months ago)

I have only a couple successful unbodified tubs under my belt and have a few questions. The strain is cube from a single mushroom found in the wild, not a multi spore. The first tub (54 qt) is still going and is on 4th or 5th flush.  The last couple flushes have been fewer mushrooms but much bigger.  Is there any way to stack the deck to get bigger ones on the first couple flushes?  I am guessing it is a water thing mainly with the bigger ones coming after the sub is dunked.  I have the lid open a little more than on the first flushes too.  Does that have an affect?

I have 6 grain jars ready to spawn.  Should I make the substrate thicker or maybe wetter to start? Would that result in bigger ones on the first flushes?  I have been squeezing only a few drops out of the substrate on my prior spawns.

Here is a picture of the biggest ones:

Those look really nice man.

So you cloned the wild one?

It’s normal to have larger shrooms in later flushes.

For some reason more water in the sub actually makes mushrooms smaller, no idea why.

It’s probably mostly genetics. Some varieties will have large mushrooms first flush like AA+ or Orissa India, it is normal to get bigger mushrooms in later flushes though.

Thank you for that info. Okay, drier is better.  What about thicker substrate?  More FAE?  Can anything be done to get them bigger sooner?

My buddy Jerry found it on his property that he leases to a farmer who keeps cattle on it.  Actually, it was before I learned the wonders of agar so it wasn't cloned.  I just got extremely lucky and scraped some spores and gill material into some liquid culture.  I have been doing g2g to keep it going.

That is the definition of multi spore.
If you want to stack the deck it will take agar work and dialing in growing conditions too

Agar work is next on my agenda. I am going to clone a couple of the fatties.  I do understand that some mycelium is faster, better than others.  Case in point: I used identical amounts of substrate and grain spawn in two identical 32 qt tubs.  One of the tubs is a day behind the other and has fewer mushrooms.  The only difference between the two tubs is which jars went into them. I am very excited to start agar work!

As far as dialing in conditions is concerned, I suppose that is why I am asking the questions I did.

I get the beads of moisture on the surface of the substrate while the mycelium populates the substrate, but didn't really change the amount of FAE until after the first flush and that was mainly because I was concerned that I waterlogged the substrate.  Should I open the tub up more and earlier as long as I don't let it dry out the surface?  Even if I don't spray the surface I try to mist the sides and top of the tub to keep the humidity up inside.  I assume that is important...

Some people study their asses off for college exams and some people wing it. Nice job winging it. They look impressive for a first run wild undomesticated spore to LC tub.

My hat is off to you for that one.

To be honest I tried the liquid culture thing before I found this site and had bad contamination issues to start with.  I didn't understand the problems and drawbacks of using LC at first.  For those of you who don't know, you can't tell in many cases whether or not a LC is contaminated just by looking at it.  Like I said,  I was just extremely lucky that it worked at all.  The cube that Jerry found had about a 2-1/2" cap on it, so a nice specimen for sure.  It is quite a strong stain too.

It was not all shithouse luck, though.  I have done lots of research and I am pretty meticulous with sterile work and cleanliness.  I actually grew mushrooms in rice cakes back when I was in college in 1979. Things have sure changed since then. This is a fun and interesting hobby. I want to start growing edible ones too.

Try taking a clone of the characteristics you are looking for then grow it out. If it performs the way you want, take prints and repeat till you find a culture That has characteristics  you are looking for.

Fast forward a few days and I have some nice mushrooms I want to try cloning.

Unfortunately Amazon doesn't consider MEA as an essential commodity at the moment due to Covid 19...  I hydrated (cooked 45 minutes) some oats yesterday and saved some of the liquid.  Realizing it is not the best option, does the community think this will work as a nutrient source?  I thought it might be too rich and was going to cut half of it 50% with water and experiment.  I do have agar and I have lots of cat and dog food I can use.  I searched for recipes and just got more confused... Please help.  I don't have a lot of time this morning.  Thank you!

I just though of something... can I take a couple samples for cloning and put in the fridge for a few days to delay things?

There are lots of people on here who use grain soak water for plates. I’m currently using it as well, and the mycelia are taking to it great! The argument has been put forward that the mycelia don’t have to change food sources, which makes for a faster colonization start. I haven’t seen evidence as to this, but not having to buy lme appeals to me. Love your grow!
I’m using straight filtered GSW (coffee filter)  but I’ve seen people, who don’t, and dilute it.
On my plates, it’s working well at full strength. I’m using 10g agar, 500ml GSW.

Thanks for that info!  I diluted slightly to go from 375 ml to 500 ml, but added one drop of Karo (like pasty).  I did a variety of plate sizes assuming at something has got to work.  I will PC them tomorrow.  I think I will let that big one open up so I can get a killer print or two and I can still do the cloning thing... If not with that one with one of the other ones coming along.  I'm excited to hopefully get a huge flush of the biggins!

The variety plates:

That's the way it always works.  If you can reduce the pinset on the first flush you'll get bigger fruits, but it seems to be pretty much genetic IME.

BTW them fruits are purdy. :cookiemonster:

I use coffee and agar on some plates recently. Worked fine.
