Test to see if Contam or Myc
    #26536774 - 03/15/20 02:19 PM (3 years, 10 months ago)

Is there any test I can run to see if my petri dishes contains a contam vs myc? I am really trying to hold onto what I believe is myc growing - white, cloudy. Is there any test I can do without growing out to mushrooms to verify?

One other quick one - I am making new petri dishes now. I plan on letting them sit for 3 days to see if any contams pop up. Is 72 hours typically enough? Thanks for the help

I usually let them sit for a few days after I make plates.
I started keeping test plate (untouched sterile and one where I touch it with my bare hand to see how long or if contams will appear)

Take a small piece and do a transfer to see if its myc or not.

Let the plate grow out a bit first before transferring. I am a newbie at spotting myc and bacteria so I let it grow out a bit first then do a transfer. Sometimes bacteria can look like germinating myc and visa versa so I let it spread a bit then do a transfer and see what it does

Thanks. Kinda curious, after transfers - can you tell it's a contam most of the time? Have you ever grown out a contam and placed it in a jar for inoculation? At what point do you know?

There's no point to leaving petris to see if contams grow, because contams grow at different speeds.  Just make clean petris.  You can leave one alone to see if it contams as a control.

For myc vs contams, (a) experience, (b) myc grows slower than most contams, (c) myc is usually better structured than contams when you examine it.

I have grown out significant amounts once of a contam that I though was myc, but it had some characteristics in retrospect that should have given it away...

If in doubt post pics. :cookiemonster:

:imwithstupid:

100% right.

And for sure post pictures next time. We can’t tell a contam from a verbal description.
