Why so small??
    #26536571 - 03/15/20 12:22 PM (3 years, 10 months ago)

Why are my mushrooms so small? This is my 1st flush in monotub. Theyre Golden Teachers. They are only 1-2 inches tall and the veils have broken. The caps are no bigger then a dime. Is it because its the 1st flush or did i do something wrong somewhere along the line? I wasnt expecting them to grow as big as in the wild but damn theyre not even as big as a liberty cap. Additional info if needed is this- Golden Teacher spore syringes, 6 lbs rye berry grain spawn, 10 lbs coco coir/vermiculite substrate, 64qt monotub

I could be a lot of things sadly. No easy answer. Genetics, FAE, lighting, sub over field capacity. Is that true casing layer?

Casing layer is same as sub coco/verm. Lid was off most of fruiting time (my room is sterile) so i dont think its FAE cuz they were getting air. Sub was pretty much at field capacity, maybe just slightly under but definitely not over. Light was 12 on 12 off

The lid should be left on during fruiting. The microclimate at the sub

will dry out and mess up the pin forming process.

Is that why the mushrooms themselves are so small? Or do u think its something else?

If every other factor is correct and that's the only variable then I'd say yes

My guess would be that you didn't use enough grain spawn for the amount of coir/verm used. Use more grain next time.

I had this one small tub that I put 2 QT's of VERY bacterial spawn into. Everyone told me I should throw them out, that's how yellow and gross the jars were. But anyways they produced a flush but my shrooms were SO tiny it was crazy. Like my smallest fully mature shroom was probably 1/2" tall and had a cap about as big as your pinky nail (assuming you're not a Sasquatch )...So I don't know if the bacterial spawn had anything to do with it or not but that's the only time I had shrooms that small...
