Isnt death rate extremely low for all but the very elderly
Not really. I think the death rate is between 1.5-4% depending on demographics and health response of a region. The USA might be on the higher end because there aren't enough hospital beds, there was a slow response and there is no unified public healthcare system. With a 40-70% infection rate you could have 100,000 to millions of deaths. The economy is going to implode and most services won't be available for maybe 3 months.
Swine flu infected 59 million Americans in 2009.
If this thing is even slightly more contagious than that, and it's incubation period suggests it is, and considering the high travel period it hit China it would be easy to imagine it's infected more than 100 million people already.
Do that many tests even exist?
Lets say 100 million people have been infected. That makes the current death toll 0.0065%.
But that would rise. So would infections.
We just don't know. That's the scary thing. There's so much we don't know.
We also have no idea if it's one of these viruses that give the survivors complications after they recover. ie cancer risk or respiratory disease.
But it seems less scary to me because I've studied a fair bit of viruses before. We're constantly constantly constantly exchanging viruses and bacteria that can seriously hurt us. On any given year you're infected with a dozen or more.
If you're around 30+ you likely have herpes zoster, herpes simplex, esptein bar virus, Meningococcus, and human papilloma virus. That is chicken pox, oral or genital herpes, mononucleosis, meningitis, and... HPV. That virus that causes cancer in women and occasionally does extremely weird things to our immune system. Things we've barely begun to understand.
In your body, right now. And science doesn't yet know what effects that has on our bodies.
And there's tons of infections that we never know about. We only talk about the common ones we know clobber us after a period of time, like Lyme disease.
There's alot of viruses that seem to do nothing that we later end up linking disease. There's a host of diseases science believes may be bacterial or viral in origin.
There's so much we don't know in general.
And that's why science is so alarmed at anything new. Because for all we don't know about everything else we do know some things. We know almost nothing about this coronavirus. We can only speculate based on what we know of other coronaviruses. And there's alot we don't know there either.
Viruses are so scary they're not even worth being scared over. Beyond, ya know, washing your goddamn hands.

InfiniteDreams said: Let's not forget this about China. Early cases in December, doctors were ordered to change the official statements and claim they made an error. Cause of death was also falsified as the government attempted to suppress and cover up the existence of this virus.
Then a large social gathering in January with millions of people in close proximity sharing food occurs in the infected region. Followed by Lunar New Year where they travel out spreading the infection far and wide.
Please don't tell me about the Chinese response to this virus.
The US's cover up isn't much better. The CDC has admitted they aren't testing so that they can decrease the number of cases, the president requested this, he's also proposed budget cuts to the CDC.
No argument there. The US gov't is a total shitshow.

Everyone thinks SARS is some shit that happened in 2002 or whenever, but there are people with long term complications suffering today that you never hear about and medical science has no idea how to treat them

I can't find the article I'm looking for, Google news has become impossible to search for stuff on classic SARS, its all new sars for pages. Here is one source, ME = Myalgic encephalomyelitis:
"In 2003, in Toronto, Canada, a SARS epidemic infected at least 273 people. A study looked at 107 patients from this epidemic who had been in intensive care. The symptoms the study looked at are very similar to ME.
It found that one year after being infected, 17% had not returned to work due to severe post-viral symptoms persisting. Many also had ongoing health problems, even when they went back to work. In total, 87% reported still having symptoms a year later. The study did not review the patients again."

Just Google SARS or Coronavirus and "permanent pulmonary damage" or something along those lines.

Quote:
Even if death doesn’t occur, some patients survive with permanent lung damage. According to the WHO, SARS punched holes in the lungs, giving them “a honeycomb-like appearance”—and these lesions are present in those afflicted by novel coronavirus, too.
