Fun little read - need to find some more papers to back this up...
Antimicrobial activity of essential oils and their components against the three major pathogens of the cultivated button mushroom, Agaricus bisporus
Abstract
Essential oils of Matricaria chamommilla, Mentha piperita, M. spicata, Lavandula angusti folia, Ocimum basilicum, Thymus vulgaris, Origanum vulgare, Salvia officinalis, Citrus limon and C. aurantium and their components; linalyl acetate, linalool, limonene, α-pinene, β-pinene, 1,8-cineole, camphor, carvacrol, thymol and menthol were assayed for inhibitory activity against the three major pathogens of the button mushroom, Agaricus bisporus, i.e. the fungi Verticillium fungicola and Trichoderma harzianum and the bacterium Pseudomonas tolaasii. The highest and broadest activity was shown by the Origanum vulgare oil. Carvacrol possessed the highest antifungal activity among the components tested.

No idea if replying to this is against the rules, but considering how important a clean environment is to a grow, I would like to bring to the attention of this forum my routine. I live in a plasterboard/wood rental with carpets. Not ideal (prefer non porous surfaces of course) but many members are stuck with wood/carpet houses. After I vacuum the area I spray the house down with a 70% ethanol solution with thymol crystals added, perhaps 20g per liter. The thymol is a powerful antifungal, non toxic to mammals. It should, one would hope, drop the fungal load of the household to help battle contamination in bulk grows and further flushes. Has anyone else used thymol? Does anyone have opinions on this? How does everyone else keep the fungal load of their grow area down?

The highest and broadest activity was shown by carvacrol and thymol with very low MIC and MFC values (0.02-1.5 μl/ml)"

I sprayed the room down with alcohol but from what I understand that doesn't seem to have much 'staying power' with regard to killing mold. Perhaps thymol which would hang around a lot longer would have a longer term effect on killing surface molds and perhaps inhibiting sporulation that may contaminate grows. Very interesting! Thank you!

That's my belief. The 70% alcohol should disrupt the molds a bit, but serves mainly as a solvent for the thymol. Perhaps the alcohol helps the thymol penetrate the mold better? I am yet to complete a grow but so far have not had contamination issues. Who knows. Best of luck!
