Cleaned in agar. Some are g2g transfers from master jars cleaned on agar.

A lot have varying levels of bacteria but will prob still do one good flush.

Ones like pics five and seven I’d trash.

6 and 8 have the bright thick bacteria look to them but if they fully colonize should work in a shoebox if you want.

How do you spot bacterial issues? Idk what I'm looking for. Also any ideas how to avoid it in the future?

Thanks for you help!

It’s something you just have to develop an eye for overtime, it’s been the hardest thing for me.

Five and seven look wet and the myc is real thin, a lot of bacteria produces wet spots.

6&8 the myc is really thick and solid/puffy. Most of the time healthy myc looks sort of like hair growing over the grains, it sort of flows.

I don’t have many good pics of healthy jars but here’s a decent one.

This is a different species but it’s close enough. It just rolls over the grain and stays as fine hairs.

Also in your second picture if you look right around the center there’s a few grains that are colonized but have bare spots in the middle with a really defined edge where the myc stops. That’s another sign of bacteria.

Do you have pictures of the plate you used?

A.k.a. that was a great response. I have to agree with him 100%. You made me want to post my jars and have you rate mine.

Second pic, middle of jar by the dark spot, does that have a wet ring around the uncolonized part of the the grain?

These are not the specific cultures but they pretty much all look like this before I use them.

Lol thanks, I’m still real new to this too but I’ve been focusing on learning spawn lately.

Are you talking about the 45degree like under the logo in my second pic? That’s where you can see the fine hairs really well at the edge of the growth.

In the ops second pic these are the ones I’m talking about. Colonized outside but bare in the middle, and there’s a clear wet looking line where the myc has met the bacteria and stopped growing.

Unfortunately it seems like spawn is really just something you have to do over and over until you get a feel for it, which I’m just starting to myself. The things I pointed out here and the post before are the things that are easier to see immediately  but I’m just starting to get to where even without the obvious signs I can tell something is just off overall.

I’ve had tons of bacterial jars and ime if the myc looks sketchy but colonizes the whole jar you can still spawn it and get a good flush. Like Six and eight in the op I bet will still colonize pretty quick and fruit fine.

In my second pic there might be some bacteria or it might just be from grains pressing on the glass. I shook it up the other day so I’ll know soon. That’s the type of stuff I’m still learning too.

Aka i misread your post.

I thought you were saying you had mold that was similar to myc and was hard to spot. You mentioned "hairs" and in my head i was like whoa the mold is rhizomorphic???

I now realized you were trying to show op healthy myc.

Thats what i get for cycling between  2 laptops and my phone rather rapidly.

Also those plates look good to me, so it’s probably either grain prep or agar/g2g where the bacteria’s getting in.

I recently switched to a new brand of wbs and like half my jars went bacterial all of sudden. Turns out there’s a new type of grain in this one that looks like it’s over soaking and bursting and that’s where I’m seeing bacteria everytime. Makes me wonder if I’m pcing long enough too though cuz seems like sterile is sterile and burst grain shouldn’t matter.

Lol I did post a pic of mold that looks like myc a few hours ago too, first time I’ve seen it.

Yeah I've had some jars look like 2, 5 &7. Especially the #2 jar. Let em go for a bit and some didn't fully colonize and a couple did. The ones that did had that weird wet sugar\powder look to em and eventually turned green. Just my 2¢. Not that it means much lol. I'm still learning as well haha. Good luck!
