I think these are NOT active, but I'm curious - they took me by surprise! (without camera).
Blasting out of old horse shit in grass, off trail, Santa Cruz Mnts, CA
Cap 4cm max in diameter, younger ones smooth and a little sticky
Stem fragile, bruising brown, tallest 18cm or so
Spore print black.

Paps carry a reddish brown stem
Pan Cyans carry a more white to bluish/black stem when stained

Yes, that's what I was thinking... until I looked at the recent post that was identified as the same. But I think variation is the rule! back at cha!

Panaeolus semiovatus. Nice find, they are somewhat rare in California. They have longer and larger caps than P. papilionaceus.

And that is why your the man Alan
So are these inactive as well and is that the sure sign to tell the differance...The longer stems and larger caps? Ant other characteristics that are different?
I see alot are carrying a veil on the mature specimens as well
Wasn't seeing veil in any of these stems but zooming in on pic 2 I see the remaining veil around the edges of the caps

I think these veils didn't stick to the stem due to low humidity. These are edible and are the largest Panaeolus in California, perhaps the largest in the world.

XLNT! It makes sense that mushrooms might look just a bit different after a long dry spell. And yeah, in Pic 2, I didn't really notice it myself until now... does appear to be a few veil remnants on a couple of the caps, and maybe some residual markings on the stems. Very cool, thanks to both of you!

I have no doubts they are the world's largest Panaeolus, check these I found back in 2015:

Yeah, thanks for posting that, Anglerfish... holy shit! (almost literally) It's interesting that those Panaeolus don't seem to be sprouting too tall, as the ones I found were, but man are they huge!
