I found a good few Laughing Gyms today.
Has anyone here ate them before? are they active? are they ok to eat?

hey guys
Ended up going to the central hills instead of the south - sadly no actives but was slightly distracted by finding porcini for the first time
Can't wait for the rains next week!!

Congrats on the porcini. There's plenty of subs about in the central hills from a few spots I checked.
A couple finds of subs and G.purpuratus today

Hey all, not looking for exact locations, but I'm not an adelaide native. When people say southern hills, are we talking the Kuitpo area or further south? Thanks

Depends where you are and who you talk to. To me southern hills would be anywhere south of the freeway down, but to somebody else they might take it from Meadows down, another person might say something else. We have a lot of massive areas to hunt in so wherever you pick has a good chance of being the right spot, we are very lucky and we can go find our 'own' little patches.

laughing gyms (gymnopilus junious) aren't actually active. found this out from a recent fb post from Alan Rockefeller, where he talks about a new study:
"A new paper just came out on the Gymnopilus junonius group in North America, focusing on the northeastern species. It's very good, and goes a long way towards answering several pressing questions that have been open for a long time. It's conclusions are supported by high quality microscopy and ITS+LSU DNA sequences.
One striking finding is that Gymnopilus junonius does not occur in North America, and is not psychoactive. It occurs in Europe, Australia and South America, solving the mystery of why European big laughing gyms consistently fail to cause laughter."
turns out all those active 'laughing gyms' (gymnopilus junious) americans were eating weren't actually laughing gyms, they were two other species that are very hard to distinguish macroscopically.
EDIT: 'gyms' has been corrected to laughing gyms (gymnopilus junious)

There are active Gymnopilus, its just that junonius isnt active, which is common in Aus/NZ. bobwastaken posted Gymnopilus purpuratus which is active a few posts back.

Went out this weekend to a new spot and found my first subs of the season! all be it a bit old, wish I had went earlier.

Also found what I believe is maybe my first alutacea. they could be Protostropharia semiglobata as pointed out on my id request, will have to report back with fresher specimens.

Got our fair share of porcini at a super well known spot as well, pleanty to go round

Also went down south and didn't find any actives in my regular spots but a few interesting other species and an obligitory pretty muscaria pic
 Tricholomopsis rutilans (Plums and custard)
  Austropaxillus muelleri/infundibuliformis

Thanks mate, that helps a lot. I'll keep scouring the spots I have been. It's been great to just get out and explore. Hoping I'll find gold soon. We have a couple of nights of ideal weather now too.

It's a good question, Itake. A few years ago, I simmered some fresh young specimens for half hour or so, strained and drank as a tea with honey. Provided a mild euphoric and relaxing high. Bit of a body stoned feeling, but it was some time ago now and I can't really remember. I was writing for uni at the time and I was able to keep working. Didn't impact cognition negatively.
Howdy to the rest o' yall and happy hunting 2020.
