spawning to unpasteurized manure * 1
    #26533268 - 03/13/20 06:25 PM (3 years, 10 months ago)

so I had some old jars I was going to make a bed with but the weather's not going to co operate and a whack of manure so ....

let's do iffy spawn to untreated manure with larvae included and a few rocks in a tub that's not clean n covered in grain starch n dead flys  and is far too big to actually be useful (105 qts)...genius right?

Wow that’s reassuring, I just bought manure for a first shot at pans and it was like two bucks for 50 pounds or something. I was worried about messing up pasteurization but if it works this well it might replace coir for me. Can’t beat a couple cents of substrate per tub.

How much spawn did you use?

Lol he even said iffy spawn Feldman! Thats even better.

:whathesaid:

really makes me wanna give it a go.  been a while since I spawned to manu, but thats all I used to use before my gnar gnar grain batch made me paranoid and I switched to coir.  havent gone back because of simplicity and ease of prep/ not having to drive to a stable to collect and then dry and shred it but it sure did colonize well and make for some nice myc food and fruits:wink:

Was this store bought manure?

That old black kow thread came up and I didn’t realize some brands supposedly come pre pasteurized.

Then the pan grew fine.

After seeing this I figured store manure straight from the bag would definitely work.

Fully colonized in a few days. And I left some of the wet leftover manure/verm mix sitting in a tub out in the open. Still no mold after a week. I though manure would be a lot sketchier to work with.

Are bugs something that you usually deal with or do you think they are caused by the manure?

oh the manure was loaded when I got it lol, this really was worst case scenario it was old spaen that was already iffy, freshish manure that was soaked and not aged or dried( bugs don't tend to live in the dry stuff) from a stable so it's loaded with urine, the tub had lots of dead flus from sitting on my deck after I used it to dry grain with so it was covered in grain starch and it is a 110 ltr tub and the temps have not hit 70 in the room yet lol.
the goal was to make a bed outside my room  but the ground was still frozen so I said fuck it

the pasteurized tubs are starting to knot up so a few days behind the untreated tub.
the untreated tub is now pushing a lot of pins out but I'm not expecting a great canopy or anything I've really neglected this tub from the start lol

With all this quarentine time I'm trying to come up with all crazy ideas for spawn and substrate. Fixing to shred some palm leave in my chipper to see how that works.

We all got time, let's experiment!

well I won't call it a total fail  but I think it could be better. the pasteurized subs are actually way behind this one but I will run this again but properly so fresh clean spaen and I'll dry the manure to keep the bugs down proper tub size  sub depth ect

there is that mole thing, is this a culture you have been seeing it on?

is this experiment showing that we don't need to pasteurize poo?

I never see it on this culture but it showed up in this tub, the other two tubs don't have it at all neither did the parent

and no it wasn't really to show anything it was just documenting a fuck it moment, I've used untreated manure before it's nothing new and I would suggest treating it, these are usually ok for a good flush

gotcha, well it was a cool documentation nonetheless

I cant wait to pop my poo cherry this summer, pasteurizing is an untested process for me yet

So let me get this straight... you have a thread where you can’t get regular prepared tubs to first flush because of mold and then you go and knock up a tub of unpasteurized manure with sketchy spawn and you get a decent looking flush?  Sounds like your wrong is right and your right is wrong.

unpasteurized is loaded with microbes but often along with it is dung loving fungi, unpasteurized can fend off most contams we worry about because it's already loaded with stuff, we kill most of that stuff pasturizing then after a couple weeks molds can get a foot hold. trich will indeed consume this tub that much I do know

do you so your saying with unpasteurized, you don't have to worry about bacteria contams, but you will lose them to mold, or another fungus at some point? would you recomdend this for a good 1st flush, like a better 1st flush than normal? Like say, I were growing pan cyans, and typically my first flush isn't great, and the second flush is always much better... with this tek, I would get just 1 good flush? or is this just something for cubes??

it works ok with pans as well but I never did this to recommend anything I just documented it, it's not going to increase yield or be any more resistant, I just did an outdoor grow but inside lol.
Bacteria never really is a threat to a bulk substrate it is a threat to our grain spawn, our subs will have bacteria that just a given but if it is in your spawn it will be enough to eventually let mold take over

I see, that makes sense. I for one, think those bugs might be beneficial in your substrate.. as they die and eat the poop, and poop more nutes. Not all bugs, but I do think some bugs are more helpful than harmful.. but maybe more so when theyre dead,, especially bugs like ants.. Once I can source some P. Zapotecorum spores I have a theory that scooping up a fire-ant clay soil ant-pile with all the ants and all and quickly closing the container, taking them home and PCing them in the container. Then add 2 parts fire ant pile, 2 parts coir, and 1 part verm as the substrate and see if I can do a good grow of those with that substrate. I think something like that would be good for a landslide mushroom.

I’m definitely throwing some manure in my next couple subs to see if there’s any difference.

What about mixing manure with your grain? Like dry dehydrated cow turds dusted and PF'd with grains in a tote? Then mixed with coir for bulk?

I’m planning on doing a couple shoeboxes with half coir half manure, and some pure manure with the batch of jars colonizing right now.

Is there enough of a difference to make it worth using manure?

Even if there’s no improvement I’ll prob still use it as long as it performs equal to coir just cuz it’s three bucks for 50 pounds.
