Moved to part time due to Coronavirus
    #26532610 - 03/13/20 12:15 PM (3 years, 10 months ago)

This sucks I make decent money and enjoy juicy checks. I work in organ donation and this has hit us hard as most people believe it or not are elderly donors. The bones and tendons are used to make all kinds of shit. Well our company lost a bunch of money since the announcement of this dumb virus so they have made cuts. Luckily I was just moved to 3 days a week and not let go. Hopefully this only lasts a month or so.

I heard trump say they are going to help out people affected by this shit but idk how.

This is hurting everyone. Even the stockmarket is down right now. They're closing schools down and everything else. It's going to be a long year.

:allsodisappointed:

Quote:

Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.
This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. The cost of one modern heavy bomber is this: a modern brick school in more than 30 cities. It is two electric power plants, each serving a town of 60,000 population. It is two fine, fully equipped hospitals. It is some fifty miles of concrete pavement. We pay for a single fighter with a half-million bushels of wheat. We pay for a single destroyer with new homes that could have housed more than 8,000 people. . . . This is not a way of life at all, in any true sense. Under the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from a cross of iron.[

-Dwight D. Eisenhower 1953

Funny how we find the money for countless pointless wars and corporate bailouts but can't provide decent healthcare or education unlike most other "first world countries" at this point.

I don’t think there is any doubt we are now in a recession. Expect job loses to be steep and quick. Probably gonna lose 1-2 million jobs in the next six months.

It was already coming, and this outbreak will no doubt make it considerably worse.

Seems like the current administration has been trying to keep actual testing down so we can have "lower infected numbers" compared to other countries to try and offset the economic damage. But that shit is going to backfire when we get hit the hardest and have the weakest response.

Hell now republicans are literally trying to sneak anti abortion legislation into the Corona emergency response bill: Republicans Tried to Sneak Abortion Restrictions into the Coronavirus Bill

They are also refusing to bass bills that would help the response to the epidemic, almost like they want it to get worse. https://washingtonpress.com/2020/03/12/mitch-mcconnell-trashes-democratic-coronavirus-relief-bill-for-being-barely-related-to-crisis/

Really is shocking how shameless they are and have been for quite some time.

Yes we were already at the end of the business cycle and all it would take it some minor trigger to end the boom - and this isn’t a minor trigger. Recessions never really creep up on you. Almost always the economy turns on a dime and it always looks like times have never been better right before it turns to shit.

I wonder if my job is safe. There are definitely people that can be laid off, and when the weather is bad there are plenty of people who get sent home for the day.. but I'm never one of them. My crew isn't sent home unless everyone is. We keep the roads drivable. Even if daily commuters and stuff stop using the roads, the roads are still in use for transport of goods and such.

Really hope that translates to I'm still necessary in a pandemic.

I think it’s pretty safe. People who work outside are probably not at that great a risk as long as you are not sharing tools.

By definition, there can only be a recession if the economy is affected over a period of a few months. Hence, a one-week downturn is not a recession.
This of course does not change anything about the chance that a recession has just started over the past few days. Based on earlier predictions of economists, this is a very likely scenario. The only thing needed was a trigger, and we have one now.

More economic hardship is likely ahead, and the question is only how badly it will hit us. I think it will depend greatly on the extent to which stock markets will be able to recover (or not) once the initial panic is reduced and production starts to grind into gear again. Given the nature of this pandemic, it will probably take at least 8-12 weeks before that starts to happen. Until that time, we can only hope that the market stabilizes somewhat. Obviously, even if it stabilizes throughout the crisis, we have not yet hit the point where it's likely to do so as we're still only witnessing the initial response. The following 2-3 weeks will likely be characterized by a further downward spiral. This implies that the current development we're seeing is likely to be worse than the 2008 credit crunch at least in the short term, with severe uncertainty for the medium to long term.

Yes the downturn has to last for of a period of two or three months, but the recession is still considered to have started at the begining of that downturn period. We have negative growth right now and it will show in this months data.

One more day and I'm off until Tuesday. A while ago I put in a vacation request for this Thursday through Monday.

I can change it and save it for later since I'll just be sitting at home but part of me just wants to get home, lock my doors and drink the case of beer I have in my fridge. Then eat a dose and just sit back. I have everything I need and I won't need to leave once until Tuesday morning when I have to go back to work.
