Cultivation of Seaweed (small scale aquaponics) * 1
    #26531763 - 03/12/20 09:07 PM (3 years, 10 months ago)

So with the title in mind, Ive been racking the idea of being able to grow my own seaweed. Mainly for the benefits of producing a super food that can be eaten both dry/wet and have multiple uses in both the garden, "lab" and kitchen.

1. source a viable red saltwater algae from local beaches ---> preferrably red algae, yet additional information on species native to cali are welcome, especially ease of cultivating

2. ideally dial in a substantial and sustainable cycle of said seaweed, on a weekly-monthly consistency (less if applicable)

3. be able to manage any possible contaminates associated with a saline system inland, as well as ways to help reduce any possible genetic senescence (long/short term)

I am aware that much of my information can be sourced from a simple browser search, but regardless I was curious whether the topic could be easily elaborated by fellow members with any experience in this area. Beyond that, I hope this is a fresh topic to at least build dialogue and help point any expeirence-less noobs like myself in the right direction.

A main concern that I have mostly consists of the nutritional requirements of the culture, how fast it would need to be replenished and any supplimentary organisms like a fish/crustaceans I can add to help with any diminishing nut.s that can be easily sourced without spending too much long term.

Very cool subject. :takingnotes:

I know nothing about seaweed cultivation but I used to live in Hawaii and they had a lab that grew things like seaweed using super cold deep sea salt water.

Its called the Natural Energy Lab of Hawaii: http://nelha.hawaii.gov/
