FDA reports first drug shortage due to coronavirus On February 27, 2020, FDA announced the first reported drug shortage brought on by the recent COVID-19 outbreak. The agency did not identify the drug but stated that the shortage is “due to an issue with manufacturing of an active pharmaceutical ingredient used in the drug” and is “related to a site affected by coronavirus.” FDA assures that there are alternative drugs patients can use during the shortage, and that it is doing everything possible, including working with manufacturers, to mitigate the issue.

I think the fact that it is unnamed is interesting. I wonder what it is...

Pretty sure that it's a respiratory drug also. I have seen many people who were not able to fill their medication for asthma. Not sure exactly which one.

WHY the lack of information?
Quote:
The FDA has not said which medications are at risk of supply-chain disruption. Probably most at risk are APIs that only China supplies, including types of antibiotics and vitamins. Chinese pharmaceutical firms have captured 97 percent of the U.S. market for antibiotics and more than 90 percent of the market for vitamin C. In 2018, 95 percent of ibuprofen, 91 percent of hydrocortisone, 70 percent of acetaminophen, and 40–45 percent of heparin imported to the United States came from China, according to the U.S. Commerce Department.
Many over-the-counter and generic drugs [PDF] sold in the United States are made in China, including antidepressants, HIV/AIDS medications, birth control pills, chemotherapy treatments, and medicines for Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, epilepsy, and Parkinson’s disease.

This is correct, its albuterol(at least), but right now I think it mostly affects nebulizer solutions and not emergency inhalers(yet).

They probably don't want to release the name in the press and cause the demand to go up any higher than necessary but it is listed on the fda website.

There are other reports not linked here that said so, I had read about it before ever seeing this thread. Though mainstream sources won't generally get more specific than "respiratory drugs" or "nebulizer solutions".

This is old news actually. I was following the FDA and CDC pages about a month ago and saw that.
It is true that many active ingredients are made in China.
Then again, China dealt with this shit first and seemingly harder than most nations due to initial lack of response (we seem to be following in those footsteps but that’s another story)
Anyway I was worried for a while that we wouldn’t have some regular prescription medicines due to supply shortages but I don’t think that will actually happen (not referring to hospital supplies such as saline packs etc, I mean filling scripts)
I found a list of APIs made in China. A lot of them are heart and blood pressure medications. Alprazolam was on the list but no other benzo. And I think Fentanyl Citrate Injection, and Buprenorphine HCL Injection (not sublingual suboxone type meds). The FDA and CDC themselves haven’t mentioned which drugs they are monitoring, just that it’s about 20 apparently.
So hopefully we won’t run dry on medicine, cause that along with the obvious covid could put people in serious danger. CDC says stock up on prescription pills, an extra 30 days. But will the pharmacy even give out an extra 30 days, or even 14, if it’s a controlled substance? I think not.
The greater problem seems to be that currently no one is testing generics. Even in the past they’d just visit 1 of 5 or so Chinese labs, and due to language barrier and time constraints, even then purity was questionable. AFAIK now there is No One inspecting Chinese labs so these meds could easily be contaminated and subpar. that happened with Valsartan for blood pressure and killed 81 people.
They are lengthening those bullshit expiration dates. Drugs are not like food, shelf life mostly affects vaccines. Even acid has been stored for 55 years without loss of potency. And then phens like adderall have an expiration date exactly one year from the pickup date. You can take amphetamine that expired years ago with zero problems

Couple days ago, story comes up about a US pharma executive who took fever-reducing drugs to pass health inspection for COVID-19 and get on a flight from China back to the US. I recognized the name of the company - "Biogen" - they make the medication I take for my Multiple Sclerosis. Each infusion every 5 months retails for $53,000.
Greed is a helluva drug.
