Can't get fresh mushroom smelling spawn.
    #26529207 - 03/11/20 01:51 PM (3 years, 11 months ago)

Looking for some help.

I'm really struggling with contamination at the moment. All of my work is done in front of two 2'x2' flowhoods. My agar appears beautiful and I have not lost a plate to a mold contamination in years. However the moment I make the jump from agar to grain things just don't quite seem right. There is no fresh mushroom smell in the spawn more of a dull smell if that makes sense. The Masters colonize fine in about twenty days from a very small wedge, but again don't smell like fresh mushrooms. Once these are g2g'd they again colonize fine but don't have a fresh mushroom like smell. After being put to bin the contamination rate sometimes soars to 50% even though there is no visible contamination in the bags. Also, strangely the first flush is always poor, stunted growth/ little production followed by an improved second and third flush that act normally almost as if the mycellium has overcome something by the later flushes. Is it possible that my flowhoods are allowing bacteria to get through? I have done test plate after test plate and nothing shows up on them after multiple weeks. The flowhoods were built by me and tested using agar test plates. Could the blowers be pushing too much cfm allowing bacteria to get through but not mold spores? How could I test this? Should I bite the bullet and buy some ffu's?

Honestly lost at this point any help is appreciated.

Have you tried shaking up a spawn jar then putting a few grains on a plate?

If they’re somehow picking up a contam during colonization that might show it.

But if you’re getting three flushes it’s probably something else right? Have you used the same grain/coir/supplements the whole time?

Even with several of my cleanest attempts at grain spawn yet,

I still have never cracked open a jar and smelled "fresh mushroom"

However, I think healthy cubensis mycelium has a different smell, although it is still an organic earthy smell.

I think what's most important is that it doesn't smell like
  • wine
  • gym socks/b.o.
  • death

also, they should break up pretty easily when closing in on 95%-99% colonization. A little too long at 100% you're going to have maybe an extra smack or two to loosen up the single chunk of myceliated grains, but from there they should instant break apart into individual grains and shake in the jar as if they were dry.

I think those two things alone are key to identifying clean spawn, besides a clear visual indicator.

Thanks for the responses. I source my coir from a large supplier. I had a thought that this may be an issue as well and ordered some exotera plantation soil to run some test bins with as well. It is reassuring that other people simply achieve an earthy smell to their spawn as that is exactly how my stuff smells. Also it basically falls apart even after full colonization. This has been my struggle really, everything appears perfect yet the contamination during fruiting stage is overwhelming. I will throw some grain on agar tomorrow. I'm thinking I will run the test bins with only coir as well to eliminate even more variables i.e. vermiculite and gypsum. Il update further, any other suggestions are appreciated.
