Habitat: Urban backyard rocky soil.
Gills: Off-white, attached, slightly descending down the stalk.
Stem: Entire height was small - the size of a bic lighter (~80-100mm). Off-white, solid.
Cap: The largest cap a little larger than a US quarter. Tan to light-brown, darkening in the center. Spherical.
Spore print color: Missed the opportunity here.
Bruising: None observed.
Other information: Fruits appeared to emerge from a single root trunk. No other fruiting bodies were observed in the general area.

Looks like oysters... Strange habitat, though.

That's also what I thought of too. I will note that last summer, I did quite a bit of digging and chopping up some aggressive roots from a nearby crape myrtle (lagerstroemia) and I left a lot of the roots to rot in the ground.
The soil dried up but once we got a little rain, this guy popped up near a break in the soil which I observed corresponded with where a dead/dying root lay underground. That could be an indication that the growth is a wood-loving saprophyte.
*updated*
I went and checked on the location of the fruit as it's been a few weeks and I noticed a little primordia alongside the old fruit body. I took a little trowel and low-and-bold, there was noticeable mycellium growth between the fruit body and a dead crepe myrtle tree branch.

Hohenbuehelia petaloides (i’m fairly sure). I can’t imagine a pleurotus sp. growing in this habitat, even with buried wood.
Here’s a similar phenotype in Southern CA: https://mushroomobserver.org/94437?q=18j4Z

Good call Pyro pretty sure you hit the nail on the head with that one...Now I'm curious as to how they taste compared to oysters

After checking it out, I'd say Hohenbuehelia is probably a better match as well. Not familiar with that genus. Cheers mate.

it could be Hohenbuehelia but also Pleurotus ostreatus has been known to grow from buried wood, this is to immature for me to identify accurately.

Well, I've got active mycelium from the specimen as shown in the pic from today. I could maybe try and grow it out on agar it but not sure what I'd do from there as far furthering the id efforts beyond trying to fruit it. Is that even worth it?

With some fresh rain, a new fruit has emerged. I was also to capture a spore print.

Does this illuminate any other insights into an ID?
