I see a lot of wispy rhizo with pe. I know it sounds like an oxymoron but I’m sure you know what I mean.
Those super thin rhizo fingers with fine myc growing off them.

All of my T1s were beautiful whispy rhizo, then I transferred them to a bad agar recipe and messed it all up lol. I'll be taking T3s today of invisible mycelium and transferring them to my old recipe so I hope it shows back up.
My cult season is really short so I'm trying to make the most of it this time. I've got like 20 varieties planned and one mega giveaway at the end...or should I just run PE 20 times? lol

Hey Bigfoot! Same wispy growth from a swab germination plate.
Glad some kind of growth is finally coming off of it.

Someone once asked, but I dont remember seeing the answer. When you compare coir/verm and manure/coir/verm (coir-based and manure-based) substrate, what are your take on yield and potency? Asking for PE and cubes in general.
Question for growers who done both. And for Ted and Faht, since they are the best.
I dont want to work with manure if I dont have to (smell and contam). But have some dehydrated horse manure pellets that I am willing to use if there are benefits.
Thanks.

Coir has much less risk to it, that’s for sure. If you don’t pasteurize manure correctly/thoroughly, you’re gonna end up with bacteria without a doubt. But if you have both, try both and see what tickles your bone to grow. Lol.
I don’t think potency comes into play with one over the other, imo.
Coir is too easy and you don’t have to cook literal shit on your stove. I do feel like I got larger fruits with manure (that’s always gonna be in debate) but the end weight is probably close enough that that argument is moot. Me having access to manure but still using only CV should tell ya where I come down about it

Thats what I thought. Thank you for fast response.
What recipe do you use for substrate (percentages) and what for casing, for PE (and in general for cubes?)?
I guess substrate is coir/verm and casing is peat/verm/gypsum/lime.

You got it! This is my casing prep
I do the standard CV prep and anywhere 1:2 - 1:4 ratio grain:substrate

And what is coir vs verm percentage used in substrate, 50:50 or something else?
Do you pasteurize substrate? I know coir is quite contam resistant but I guess its better to be safe than sorry.

no difference. I tested this extensively and used to only grow with manure. potency seems to be genetic. manure may provide extra nutrition the results are subtle if any and grain is the main food source in either scenario.

th e50/50 ratio will require different water volumes depending on verm size and grade. its good to get a feel for proper sub consistency(I know this takes some time/ trial error with grows) then youll know how to adjust as coir doesnt weigh out consistently and different verm grades have different water holding capacities based of surface area

Looks like switching peat did the trick.. not a blob in sight and it’s about to pop with a bunch of pins.. these pins are a sight for sore eyes.. I was super worried it was something else I did or something to do with the new place but twas the MG peat

Thank all that is holy because I doubled down and made 14 new tubs

Ooooo that's pinnin' up nicely Faht! I'm glad you got the peat figured out - I've got a few PE plates nearly ready for grain so I'll be testing out some peat from a 50lb bale soon as well as using a liner for the first time.
How big are the tubs you're running? Can't wait to see what they look like in about a week

Just the 16qt.. 2 qts of spawn. The tubs are staggered in 2’s and 3’s otherwise I wouldn’t be able to dry them all so it should be a fun month coming up
I think Ted used the bale peat and did great so you should be Golden.. yeah liners are key, ime

Happy New Year's Eve, people...I was hoping I could get some feedback on two Penis Envy monotubs I have going right now - these are my first spawn to bulk experiments.
Each tub is a 650g cooked coir brick (Bod's bucket tek) and 7 quarts of grain spawn (organic rye berries, inoculated with agar wedges). I live in a dry climate so I've been misting twice a day, but switched to once a day when I noticed water pooling on the surface. The main strange things I've noticed are the uncolonized patch on the right side of the second tub and a couple yellow spots on the surface that you can see in the close-up pictures (I think this is probably some kind of bacterial contamination).
The first row of pics is 11 days in, the second row is 9 days in. Thanks in advance for any help.
