Getting some jiffy mix done with my Anova sous vide. I have the media bottle jammed in the center to keep them from floating :thumbup:

I keep the casing misted so that it doesn't get overrun by the mycelium.  Just enough to make it glisten and wait until it drys slightly.  Maybe once every couple days.  Works well.

I always do a normal top layer then maybe a quarter inch casing of jiffy around 90%.

It’s always worked great up until my last clone which acted like the casing wasn’t even there.

The one time I tried with just a top layer sucked.

PE tends to tear through casing like none other. thats why I keep laying it down untill I can see it starting to consolidate just under the surface. then you know its done and ready

I spawn ape at the same ratio as everything else-
5lbs spawn per mono which is basically equal to 5 quarts

Used the exact tips from this thread and came up with this:

Sharing information and asking questions is what the forum is all about! I’m all for open source information. Information should be free and luckily it usually is if you know where to look and who to talk to.

I use 66Qt tubs with clear lids. The substrate is usually about 4 inches once it’s all spawned and mixed. Hope that helps

Eats- it’s so easy, I bet you’d own it even more. Jiffy mix and vermiculite is such a simple and effective casing. Oven pasteurization keeps things simple and it seems to stay good in bags for at least a couple weeks so far

how many trays are you stacking in your oven?  I stopped doing it that way cause 1 would be perfect and the rest would dry out a bit too much or get overdone. I had like 6 trays in there tho:oldman:

Six treys in the oven! Thats like the excalibur of oven pasteurizers. Were you pasteurizing your entire sub that way at one point? Thats a massive amount of casing material. Was this in bags?

So far Ive just been doing 1 large bag (8x5x19) worth at a time. Actually really only filled the bag up about 1/2 way, so there is still room for more if needed. This ends up being enough casing material for a few tubs. I have not seen any dry out or over cook doing it one bag at a time. Maybe that will happen if I start to do more at a time. Maybe it was beginners luck.
Ive just been setting the oven temp to 170 and letting them cook in there for about 1.5-2 hours.

I recently tried jiffy straight out the bag in a few shoeboxes and there was no noticeable difference between the stuff I stove top pasteurized in jars and the stuff I used straight out of the bag. As in I got 2 nice flushes out of each before they triched out, but everything triched, pasteurized or not :shrug:

Could have been a fluke though, haven't done it enough yet to say it will work every time but figured I'd mention it :thumbup:

That’s ballsy. I wanted to try this but didn’t have the guts to risk any tubs. Straight outta the bag unmodified? Or did you still add vermiculite and some water?
Now I might experiment with a couple tubs straight outta the bag
