Are you guys running out of these yet, I hear it's about the only thing that will work to prevent infection.

Yeah because we tend to believe in basic human rights.

Seriously though I don't remember any containment zones during swine flu and that killed more Americans in its first 6 months than cv has killed so far across the world.

Though to be fair H1N1 is still circulating and kills thousands every year. I have no doubt its example is a big reason wuy the CDC and WHO wanted to contain this thing.

There is no containment at this point. Either the virus dies down on its own, as many do, or we get a vaccine.

And then the potential long term effects are also completely unknown. Many infections are linked to increased risk of disease. Heart disease and cancer being the big 2 you hear about.

Why isn't the WHO setting up massive amounts of temporary hospitals?

You'd think that they would be able to do that for a first world county before it comes to "deciding who lives and who dies."

like that's possibly the dumbest fucking thing I've ever heard.

Has anyone else heard medical manufacturers ramping up production? I work next to McKesson and haven't. What about those in nursing school and medical school getting a crash course in case they are needed?

If it's a crisis of that magnitude I can't help but feel we're being wildly negligent and telling Italy to go fuck themselves.
We as in the rest of the world.

Because the virus spread undetected, some officials believe this is the reason for such a high number of cases in the country. “This started unnoticed which means by the time we realized it, there were a lot of transmission chains happening,” Riccardo says, noting that this may be why Italy has seen such a high number of cases.

Some officials also believe Italy, which has already tested over 42, 000 people, may have a higher number of cases as a result of performing more rigorous tests than their European counterparts. “This could be a bias,” Lorenzo Casani, the health director of a clinic for elderly people in Lombardy told TIME. “Look at how many tests we are doing!”

Italy, however, is also reporting an above average mortality rate at 4%. The average age of coronavirus patients who have died because of the virus in Italy is 81, according to the National Health Institute. Italy, which has one the world’s oldest populations, could be facing a higher mortality rate as a result of its above-average elderly population. “Italy is the oldest country in the oldest continent in the world,” Casani says. “We have a lot of people over 65.”

Casani says that pollution in northern Italy could be a factor in higher death rates. According to a report by the Swiss air monitoring platform IQAir, 24 of Europe’s 100 most polluted cities are in Italy. “Studies have shown a high correlation between mortality rates from viral respiratory conditions and pollution,” Casani says. “This could be a factor.”
Italy’s current national health service, known as Servizio Sanitario Nazionale (SSN), provides free universal care to patients yet remains under-funded. Investments in public healthcare make up only 6.8% of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP), which is lower than other countries in the European Union including France and Germany.

“The continuous cuts—to care and to research—are obviously a problem right now,” Casani says. “We were not prepared. We do not have enough doctors for the people. We do not have an organized plan for pandemics.”

With the number of coronavirus cases on the rise, the Italian health ministry has doubled the number of hospital beds in infectious disease wards. The Governor of Lombardy Attilio Fontana has requested that universities grant degrees earlier this school year in order to increase the number of nurses in Italy. Yet some health officials fear these efforts will not be enough.

“Right now in Lombardy, we do not have free beds in intensive care units,” Casani says. He added that doctors “have to make this horrible choice and decide who is going to survive and who is not going to survive…who is going to get a monitor, a respirator and the attention they need.”

Wishing you well and good health, Ovoidhunter; and that goes for the rest of you too.

I'm originally from WV and as I type this nothing has been confirmed there, but I bet that changes in ~24 hours or less.

The New York Times said

In late January, the first confirmed American case of coronavirus had been reported in the Seattle area. But had the man infected anyone else? Was the virus already spreading?

Dr. Helen Y. Chu, an infectious disease expert in Seattle, had a way to monitor the region. As part of a research project into the flu, she and a team of researchers had been collecting nasal swabs for months from residents experiencing symptoms throughout the Puget Sound region.

To repurpose the tests for the coronavirus, they would need the support of state and federal officials. But officials repeatedly rejected her idea, interviews and emails show, even as weeks crawled by and outbreaks emerged outside of China.

By Feb. 25, Dr. Chu and her colleagues could not wait any longer. They began performing coronavirus tests without government approval. What came back confirmed their worst fear: They had a positive test from a local teenager with no recent travel history.

In fact, officials would later discover through testing, the virus had already contributed to the deaths of two people, and it would go on to kill 20 more in the Seattle region over the following days.

Federal and state officials said the flu study could not be repurposed because Dr. Chu’s lab did not have explicit permission from research subjects; the lab was also not certified for clinical work. While acknowledging the ethical questions, Dr. Chu and others argued there should be more flexibility in an emergency.

The failure to tap into the flu study was just one in a series of missed chances by the federal government to ensure more widespread testing during the early days of the outbreak, when greater containment still seemed possible.

Even now, after weeks of mounting frustration toward federal agencies over flawed test kits and burdensome rules, states such as New York and California are struggling to test widely for the coronavirus. The continued delays have made it impossible for officials to get a true picture of the scale of the growing outbreak, which has now spread to 36 states and Washington, D.C.

It would have been lovely to have had an accurate, immediately readable diagnostic test a month or two back. It might have even helped us much in those earlier (containment centric) stages, but I'm not sure what true good broad level testing presents us with at this point, except maybe to lower the official CFR and provide some reassurance that this is not as bad as it may currently seem. Slowing the spread so as not to overwhelm existing medical infrastructure appears the primary, current priority to this observer.  Effectively quarantining everyone, everywhere (however you do that?) for at least 6-8+ weeks RIGHT now is absolutely the best chance I think we have to slow this and relieve some measure of burden from our medical systems.  With that goes a lot of shit, but foremost we will need a robust accounting of local community needs, specifically food and medicines required by our most vulnerable populations, as well as steps to start releasing even more federal funds and stockpiles as necessary for those who will surely be fiscally impacted.

After seeing what happened in Italy, I am starting to have some worries... I believe it's only a matter of time before my college closes down and the country starts taking measures to keep people at home. Cases last I checked in Canada went from 79 yesterday morning to 93 in the evening. I imagine 1000, and 10,000 is coming soon.

I am not trying to fear monger, but seriously, this shit is obviously gonna be worse than the flu. If stores are already sold out of a ton of essential items now and shit hasn't even hit the fan, what do you guys think will happen when deaths hit 1000, 10,000, in north america?

Stocking up on some shit now seems worth while to me

I am pissed about people buying up all the isopropyl alcohol like it's gonna do them any fucking good though. I need that shit for mushroom cult :elmo:

so as U.S. cases stand we have a CFR of 3.274%

1015 confirmed / 31 passed

obviously exaggerated, but it makes me wonder how many people actually have and are transmitting this currently.

(post originally suggested an inaccurate 32.74 CFR)

Because us humans have an instinctive and unrelenting primal fear of viruses and plagues.

It is not retarded to be careful.

This is pretty bad, mostly economically as well as for the elderly and infirm, but not super crazy.

It is not outlandish to think the next one could feed off of healthy immune systems as the 1918 Spanish did.

Don't know if this was posted yet:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZFhjMQrVts

I'm a bit concerned now...
My wife had a client end of Jan 2020, who was in China over Christmas 2019.
He had no symptoms and she only found out about his visit to China after the session.

She got sick 2-3 weeks after and has been on 2 courses of antibiotics and cortisone and she is still not 100%.
I got sick about 2 weeks after her and I am still sick, going 3 weeks now.
I also have been on same meds with no real improvement.

We don't show all the classic symptoms (dry cough and high fever) related to Covid-19 but it is still concerning that we stay sick.
And even if it's not Covid then it means our immune systems are going to be shot for when we might need it at its best.

The Doc said she is sure it's not Covid and didn't test us, so let's see where this ends up.

Stay safe everyone!

How can they be sure it's not covid if they dont test

A healthy 61 year old doctor died in italy, something he said about the virus is kinda freaky (end of this article)

Translated using google from this article
https://www.agi.it/cronaca/news/2020-03-03/coronavirus-dottor-cilesi-7313082/

Quote:

Ivo Cilesi, the 61-year-old doctor, known for his work to fight Alzheimer's, who died in the night between Sunday and Monday in Parma after having tested positive for the coronavirus "was fine, did not have a cold, nothing. And until a few days ago he had no health problems. No "past" disease that could complicate the clinical picture. Paola Brignoli, friend of man and vice president of the Innovative Elder Research Onlus research center he founded, tells the story to AGI. A case, therefore completely different from that of people who have died from the coronavirus so far.

"Ivo - explained Dr. Brignoli - did not suffer from any pathology before. He was an extraordinary man and the virus took him away in three days. Everything started suddenly. So this virus is even more frightening. Just Tuesday evening, I and Ivo commented that only the elderly were dangerous. But he was 61 years old "did not fall into the category of over 65 considered at risk," we felt Thursday and he was fine. "

"Sometimes we joked - continued Brignoli - we told him that he had to go on a diet. But so, to laugh". "In fact, he reassured his colleagues. In the office, there was a bit of a stir about this Coronavirus and it was thought to leave people to work from home to avoid too many contacts. And he intervened saying 'but guys, let's not dramatize, it's a "influence in all respects, a little higher, but you won't die." If I think of his last words, I get chills. "

How can they be sure if they do test?  There have been so many inconclusive and twice reversed tests it seems super sketchy.  Maybe these newer batches are more accurate, I sure hope so.

Trump and Pence won't even take them so...
