Small cacti are getting dark and drying out
    #26528125 - 03/10/20 08:20 PM (3 years, 10 months ago)

So I've had these seedling going for about 6 months. They were suppose to be Trichocereus Hybrids Peruvians. I am suspecting the light is too strong or the temps get too hot in the growbox. Currently have total of 175W CFL lights going 24/7 not sure what the temps hit though. I am not sure what to do. Or is it the weaklings are dying off? Thank you for any advice!

They look like they need more loam / coco coir in the mix. Almost all of my seedlings are in a mix of sifted forest top soil, coco coir, gravel and vermiculite. The ratios vary and some pots lack one ingredient or another due to availability. With Trichocereus, it seems that younger plants do better in potting mix while older plants do better with creek gravel added. Concrete wash gravel is an affordable alternative if you don't have a creek to get gravel from.

I would yank them out of that sand mixture so fast...

So i should try to dig it out then wash it then transplant? I have not transplanted such small cacti yet.

I do not water them that often, maybe once a week if not less.

Is this true for succulents as well? I am growing kanna plants, under a cfl 6500k 24/7.

I have grown brought a lot of plants back to life by leaving them under 24/7 small wattage cfl 6500k bulbs, but all this info simply tells me to put them to bed once they have healed. Got my kanna cuttings under east shade now. Let them get some sleep last night. I know this is off topic, but I related to the thread.

Good luck with your cacti OP.

So I have added a light timer 12/12 schedule now. Removed a 125W bulb and am going to be watering more often. Hopefully they can recover or at least stop the dmg.

That's a good idea! Hope they recover

I always wondered my plants grown under artificial 24/7 lighting would do so good at first but then overtime develop stunted growth. I would usually just put them outside at this point because I mainly use my indoor grow boxes to start seeds for my outdoor garden.

I have some San Pedro I started yrs back in the same grow box. I moved them into my greenhouse and they have been doing great there. I wanted to move these seedlings, but I think the cold temps at night are still too low. It hits 30F at night.

Well good luck!, but honestly those cacti sprouts should not mind the cold weather, the desert gets very cold at night. I never have taken in my cacti pups in the winter, left them out in frost/freeze several times, does not phase them. Most Cacti are extremely tricky for me to grow in my region. I have the worst luck with them where I live because of the high humidity here. When I was trying to grow a lot of them I just started thinking, I wish I lived in Arizona or something, cause this is just not working. They would always get the rot at the base of their stems, and turn to moosh.I have been working on better soil mixes and stick to using a ton of perlite in my mix, I have to stay away from vermiculite overall, unless I use it for top cover mixes . It's all seems to be working better.

Trichos aren't exactly desert plants though, and can handle much more water, than your ordinary desert cactus. I would re-pot them in a lighter mix, mist them daily, and give them water every time the soil dries out
