Looks like you’re living the dream. All I’ve got is about 5sq ft of bedroom space. I’m a pro at stacking tubs now though

You just gotta make what you got work. Ill be honest though working out of the bedroom or the closet is the most fun when you look back. I miss the struggle. It gives it more of a thrill and you end up feeling more proud of the product.

I got carpet too, hippie style Contam rates are under 5% for sure. Don’t run enough tubs to know exactly.
This is my trippy floor couch (and a blob that looks like a horsey ).

On plates? Idk alot better I had a long period of contamination. Couple years where I was battling it. Besides that though im doing good. Ive had 2 plates contam since I started back up. One was from a very old sleeve of petris that had holes in the sleeve. One of the plates from that sleeve got bacteria in it. The other was a plate I passed my hand over while pouring and got penicillium mold. I dont really concern myself with BE or contam rates because I do this for fun im not running a lab or company where efficiency matters. Yea carpet sucks but its not a deal breaker when it comes to growing. If I wasnt in a rental it would be gone though lmao. Ive been growing for awhile with carpet though im used to it.

Most definitely. Thank you contams suck but going through a severe outbreak can make or break a cultivator. If you dont let it break you then you can learn alot from it.

I got carpet, cats, a litter box, a bunch of storage, and a door to the outside.

Little to no contam. Of my last 100 petris I went through I don't think any of them caught anything that I didn't put on them.

I’m the same way, carpet and dogs everywhere.
Footpath is that rig how you do your pc? Ive been looking at portable options instead of a stove and just saw the little hoses with a burner on the end recently. Wasn’t sure how they work though, I started out thinking something like a portable camp stove but the smaller the better.
A fuel tank with just a hose and burner would be great.
Damn gizmo that SAB is great, I just got into g2g fairly recently and the height on yours is sweet.

I use one of those 2 burner camping propane stoves. Works amazing. Also I dont trust Pressure Cooking indoors. You do something wrong and you can make a bomb. Heats the room up like nobody's business too. Doesnt help that here in Florida its already 100 degrees all year round.

Yup. Just a small outdoor burner that I used to use for brewing. (If you happen to want an 8gal kettle, can't really beat this combo deal.)
Just hook it up to a propane tank like you would a grill, light it, adjust the regulator, and go. If you're using an aluminum PC, they'll say not to go over 12,000 BTUs, so just don't crank it and you're all good. Mine is usually only set to the very low end of the regulator, so I imagine I'm not pushing anywhere near 12,000 BTUs
I use it every time I can because we have the shittiest glasstop stove that takes me like 3.5+ hours to do a 90 minute PC cycle.

Sure! A lot of the times when using an SAB people place a towel under the box to help catch any debris or dust in the fibers to limit contamination. This usually kind of helps as long as you aren't moving the towel around and flinging it back into your work flow. I suggest using a cheap microfiber towel as it really traps dust and debris far better than a regular towel.

I have to use a dining area that's open on one side, carpeted, near the front door, and the back wall has a washer/drying closet and a HVAC return. I have two 99 cent plastic sheets- one covers the HVAC/laundry wall, the other encloses the space. Looks like that scene from E.T. It only takes a minute to unroll the plastic and tack it up.

It actually keeps the air still. A couple shots of Lysol, good to go. The only contams I've noticed so far (aside from possible bacteria in jar that came in in a needle) came from cloning a fruit, no surprise there.
My "grow room" is the top shelf of my closet, six feet wide, that comfortably holds six dub tubs side by side. I installed a narrow shelf above that for jars.

Oh ok, misunderstood at first. I thought you somehow plug the armholes with a breathable cloth that doesn’t disturb the still air environment.
If I’m being honest I kiiiinda got lazy a couple months back and did a dry run (no towel, no spraying inside the SAB) and, well...I never went back to towels. No contams yet, but it still feels kinda “wrong” lol Mushboy along with a few other TCs have been preaching the dry SAB for a while now.

Right on I just bought one myself.
I’m not familiar with this stuff, I’ll be using 23 qt presto, how much propane does a pc cycle use?
Trying to decide if I should get a huge refillable one or if the little green camping ones will work. Obviously big refillable ones would be best but I’m not planning on massive amounts of spawn on a regular basis.

In my experience I suggest One of those 15lb-20lb propane tanks. Those small ones really aint shit especially when youre doing multiple 90 min cooks. And since you wont be using it much like you said well then you can just save it for later It will get used eventually.

Definitely the larger ones you see at gas stations and hardware stores - they'll be 20lb propane tanks. You can get a lot out of them... I'd say at least 20 2hr PC cycles. You hardly need any flame at all to your PC to 15-18PSI
Presto's are aluminum, BTW. So, just keep it on the lower end. Don't let the flames get anywhere close to curling up around the base and you'll be good.
Not the best depiction, but you can see that it's pretty damn low.

I ended up getting a smaller setup that maxes at 25k btu.
Lol the one you linked is crazy, 65k. I liked how the description highlights its ability to brew beer in a windstorm.
Guess I’ll get a tank now too.

You got it AKA. Feel free to PM me if you run into any trouble... I don't think you will - it's pretty much as easy as using a gas range. That's a bullshit claim of theirs, for sure. Especially with lower settings, my PSI will be jumping all over the place with a steady wind.
Back on subject about my dirty little 'lab'
I also run it dry. No towel. No ISO spray down. Just a preliminary wipe of the floor and working surfaces and I'm off. I don't work on a grate for the most part... Finesse. That's not to say that I'm not completely envious of your setup Shquonk.... we're looking for a house right now and your lab room is pretty much of one of my parameters for whatever we buy.

An eventual projection of mine - a somewhat-commercial production. Just supplying local restaurants and grower's markets. Seems you can't do enough blue oysters around here if you tried and I'm happy to help fuel that.

How you guys keep up with that amount of work? I can see the endless amounts of petri dishes and colonizing jars in the pictures.
Are you doing it full time or retired? A friend of a friend is doing the few cakes and the occasional DMT extraction and can't really keep up with it while working normally.

It’s 99% waiting.
If you mass prep grain and jars it’s really just a couple times there’s a lot of work.
Prep/pc/knock up jars then wait a couple weeks
Spawn tubs and wait a month
Harvest and dry.

The quick turn around is what makes this so much better than plants.
Once you get the basics down it’s like an addicting game, trying to always do better or discover the perfect clone.
My “lab” is just an empty bedroom with a table for the SAB, and a drawer desk thing next to it I store my plates and agar stuff in.
Besides that it’s just tubs everywhere.

I'd guess they're just butthurt about how small they are. Plenty of the mushcult fellas will gladly share with you what they're doing on the edible/gourmet side.
I live close to where nearly half of the mushrooms in the country are grown and all of the commercial businesses are perfectly willing to offer advice, tours, cheese and wine, etc. The other local small-scale gourmet producers, too, are totally hospitable to other ambitious growers. They even trade among themselves and help each other out. I've got all the resources available for edibles/gourmets, just an iota of the funds and none of the land... Basically, it just seems like a lot of people will display a lot of hollow enthusiasm and either not have the funds/expensive land or not be willing to put in the work. There's no real threat unless you what you have is fragile... at least that's the attitude in my community. So my guess is that they have very little that they don't want to lose any of.

Sharing and supporting is what makes this community so great. We all just want to do what we love and we are all here to make sure we all accomplish that goal. Withholding information and being plain unhelpful is the wrong mindset. I've yet to experience much of that here, luckily.

Side note: is it me or are the gourmet people on here against others selling gourmet? Is it really such a competitive field? I tried to get some advice on growing/selling shiitake (on a pretty small scale) and my thread was ghosted. Not even a sympathy poast
Yeah, I can see that dynamic being the reason. I’ll try to copy that poast to trusty ol’ Mush Cult.

Haha, point taken.
I just wanna supply a couple hipster-run corner stores. Forget coronavirus, it’s an epidemic of health-food buffs around here. Still 0 chance that I’ll scale up anytime soon, but it’s be nice to have another income source, however small.

Mc will give you g2g/lc PTSD
I’m having good results messing with lc/li but g2g is the shit.
The thing keeping me interested in lc is being able to keep them on deck in the fridge or whatever and having the option to knock up tons of grain on a whim.

Nice thread!
Im just getting back into the hobby. Wanted to do it properly this time around though (no more PF and MS to grain), so I made a grow room and dedicated quite some time starting up, doing agar work and experimenting with different grains and prepping methods:

Just made the shoeboxes, hope to see my first pins the coming weeks
Then some other varieties and species if I get this going and gain some experience.

Mine takes up a closet in the spare room. The sliding doors come off when I'm ready to work and completely hidden when I'm done. I've got to figure out a new solution soon tho cause that room is becoming a nursery!

Yep! I hit my wife in the face with the blow out safety plug thingamajig like week one of growing. (it was a PC I got at the flea market) she made me order a presto that night and I've been running my shit on the grills side burner ever since.
she also complained to me the whole house got hot, the windows got wet, and it smelled like cat piss mixed with barnyard farts. I couldn't argue.
Oh yeah....

Lol. Sorry got carried away. Not sure where the lab starts and the yard begins but that's how/where I get them shrooms.

I just got myself a bayou classic propane grill and did my first PC run with it jarring chicken last week. Jarring 10 quart jars of chicken makes it smell like you're in a fucking chicken factory. I probably will never run a PC indoors again. A user here has 5 of these grills and propane tanks although that looks... sketchy as fuck lol. But iamgine doing 50 jars worth of PC'ing in one run. Sweet.

What started as a walk in closet in a spare bedroom is now a my little lab. Originally was carpet before laying some cheap plywood down and then laying down vinyl on top of that. Still needs another rack or two and on the corner I do my SAB work. Eventually I'll try out some agar or get a flowhood but for now what I'm doing works. FAE is a slight issue and I'm trying work it out to where it out to where I can get a round of fanning in while I'm at work.

i have an entire room dedicated, slowly trying to fill it. about 10x12 feet with carper. i have a flow hood and some other basics. might upload a pic of this thread grows more. the OP makes me jealous with the linoleum floors. aside from ripping it out, whats a pro way to deal with carpet? maybe plastic liner?

When I first started I bleached my entire bathroom top to bottom bleached the toilet and the shower and the sink drains, bombed the room with Lysol and ISO and washed my whole body in antibacterial soap just to knock up some brf jars... burnt the shit out of my lungs too.
Once i started working inside a SAB on the kitchen table things got much easier and my contamination rate in Petris was pretty low like 1 in 50 poured plates got contaminated...
SABS are the shit
I’m lucky I didn’t pass out from using ISO and bleach in the same room. I guess when you mix ISO and bleach it creates chloroform gas

Presto's are aluminum, BTW. So, just keep it on the lower end. Don't let the flames get anywhere close to curling up around the base and you'll be good.
Not the best depiction, but you can see that it's pretty damn low.
So I'm pretty late to this thread, but I moved my PC to one of these years ago before retirement. It is worth every penny. I can run one PC on it and the other on my Cadco hot plate and get 16qts done at the same time.

I will say that my Cadco hot plate gets up to venting way faster than the propane burner. I think the open flame is less efficient, but works to boil grains.

Exactally after I got started on grains I knocked up some brf in open air with no flame just an ISO wipe between jars and they all still produced.

My “lab” is just an empty bedroom with a table for the SAB, and a drawer desk thing next to it I store my plates and agar stuff in.
Besides that it’s just tubs everywhere.
Thats my dream.
Unfortunately i have no bedroom to spare. I don'T have place for monos, so there is no point for me to go into Grain atm (as my PC is tiny also).
But in the future i will have such a spare room and it will be epic!

All you need is a closet and the same bedroom you sleep in. My first pressure cooker was able to do either 2 or 3 quart jars at a time I don't remember for sure but I still used to get it in. I had fun doing it too. All I had was the closet in my bedroom to fruit in and the dresser in my bedroom to do sterile work on. I've been through many different situations and I always made it work.

Yeah it’s such a flexible hobby it’s great. No permanent set ups really.
Up until today I’ve only been able to pc one quart at a time, but when that quart turns to two ounces of mushrooms it’s pretty sweet.

My lab is stuffed in a closet and I take the pieces out and set them up whenever I need to work. Basically just a Presto 23qt PC, small SAB (54qts), tub of oats, torch, spray bottles (iso and water).
The only other thing is that I have a cabinet with "weather stripping" and a raspberry Pi controlled heat lamp that I use to incubate some jars, LCs and plates. Also I keep the food dehydrator out because it looks nice enough in the kitchen.
Basically everything set up perfectly to grow in a small apt and not bother my wife with the clutter.

Horrible gas exchange in a closet? No. FAE no problem I run modified monos and unmodified shoeboxes. Never had a problem I also left the door open most of the time though. I still fruit in a closet. Check out the OS mini mono link in my signature all the tubs in the bottom were fruited in a closet. No fan running or anything like that. Amount of FAE is controlled by how tight you stuff the holes but I've never had to loosen them I usually just stuff them as tight as possible. I'll be honest FAE could be a little better but closet is stealthier. It's a trade off. Also who doesn't have a closet nowadays what are you living under a rock lmao. Just kidding bro

Na shouldn't be a problem. You can definitely still do sterile work where you fruit even if it's not ideal. In a ideal world you wouldn't want anything else going on in your sterile lab but... I mean we are(most of us) amateur mycologist and hobbyists. We do what we have to to get the job done. Most of us don't have separate rooms to dedicate to growing. It's all good.

This... been there lost like 4 tubs back to back with 6q in each and just gave up for awhile. Back at it now though trying to flex my agar muscle.

Niiiiice. Little foil over the top and careful handling do the trick with these? I see myself getting boiling agar all over the place without a lid..

Yup, foil over the top. I use the 2 liter beaker to prep 1 liter of agar and that gets me 20 plates. 20 plates easliy lasts me a month or 2. I prep in my aa915 and open it to remove the sterilzed beaker in front of my filter.

You pour your plates pretty thick. 800mL gets me about 40 plates (100mm size)

Maybe it is 40 plates and i'm just retarded. We cant rule that out...
Edit: I need to pour some more plates anyway... so we'll see if i'm just brain fartin'... which i'm kinda thinking i might be.

Also 20 plates for a month? I'm just getting comfortable with agar but I feel like you'd use more if you have multiple vars ur trying to isolate/different isolates of the same var. I just ordered a case of 500... should last me a while

Yeah if we're talking a monoculture true isolate, I'm right there with you. But generally a few transfers for less competition of genetics should give quicker colonization times if memory serves me correctly. edit: as well as a more consistent fruiting

I was really surprised the difference a transfer or two can make.
These are the same clone but I think t3 and t1.

I went through a ton of agar at first because:
- I needed practice and to learn
- I needed backup in case a had contam problems
- I didn't really know how things would work
In the end I've thrown out plenty of awesome plates and ended up only being beneficial for learning the skills.
I see once you know your process as long as you've got good technique there's no need to burn through many plates.
And if you clone you are close enough to an "isolate" anyway.
But back on topic, LotKid, that's a sweet lab.

No doubt, but to keep it in perspective, the difference between a T1 and a T3 is only 2 plates. You can always G2G for expansion.

Yeah man, those shoeboxes? Epic yields on that t3 box. What did you do to clone, a pin?
Edit: yeah man sick lab forgot what thread I was on for a minute

Yeah shoeboxes, the t3 was like 480 wet, I cloned a big single shroom that popped up way before the rest.
This big guy, one just like it popped up in the t1 tub.
I just meant the genetic diversity was reduced a huge amount by t3.
As for lab stuff mine now includes a fogger and a fruiting chamber in progress for pans.

My lab consisted of a desk, a big plastic shelving unit, a Martha that was double the size of the regular ones with shelving, and a metal shelving unit lined with painter plastic for spawn. The big Martha was used for fruiting tubs and was fitted with a fogger, heater, and air pump feeding fresh air in. The spawn shelf lined with plastic just held spawn, the plastic shelving held all of my supplies (unused grain jars, empty jars, grain, case of petris, etc) and the desk was for the sab. It was all contained in a 8x8 foot room sealed with more painters plastic (walls and ceiling due to massive mold growth in my basement). I don’t have pics of the whole lab but here’s my spawn shelf and greenhouse:

And my desk was on the next wall by the spawn shelf with the plastic supply-shelving unit next to it. Went a little overboard on the lab but I have always had some contam problems and my measures helped in my situation, but may be unnecessary for others. Pretty much nobody needs to completely seal off their lab but I did

I started with my spare bedroom using one side for all clean work, inoculations and spawning. The other side I kept my colonizing jars, agar and substrate on. Then, I can’t remember why, I moved everything to the fruiting room and just did runs in there all at once. Clean room changed into my fruiting room once everything was ready to go to fruiting. I can’t remember why I did it though. I’m back to the original set up in the spare bedroom.

Nice, nice thank you. I'm just curious to see how you built the prefilter box because it is one of the more elegant looking designs I've seen. I spent a pretty penny on wood and i want to get it right.
