I can't remember the target we're looking for with soil. 50s?

That's what I understand. I know morels are around 55 so maybe low 50s. I still consider myself a noob though I would know an ovoid if I touched it. I'm hoping as soon as it stays above 50 for about a week they pop and I hope that happens really soon.

I think cardboard is nothing but a time waster. Go directly to aged, field capacity, small, hardwood mulch chips, IMO.

Quick question that hopefully someone can answer. What is the correlation between mica caps popping and ovoids? Last year was my first year and I noticed I was finding mice caps around the same time or a week or two before. Thought I had ovoids until I actually knew what the hell I was doing and learned they are mica. Same habitat and often I found them within a few feet of ovoid spots.
Anyone have an opinion? Is it possible that mica may be a great indicator of the season beginning.

I found a lot of voids last year but being my first time finding them, and them being kinda old I didn't eat em. The hunt was super fun tho and to look down at the ground and find what you've been searching for for 4 years is a wonderful feeling.

The best part about the hunt is after a few years it’s less about hunting and more about harvesting, at this point I have about 20 different spots I can go pick and all I can say is the dedication pays off big time.

I don't consider Coprinellus (or w/e)--or any one species of anything-- to be a sign of the season but maybe that's just me.
For me, it's more of an overall impression by looking at the budding of trees and shrubs, grasses waking up, the stilt grass or whatever it is growing in the floodplain, garlic mustard and may apples coming up, nettle growing, creeping Charlie gaining its first blooms, the first dandelions, jonquils being on the downturn after having bloomed, etc etc etc.
IOW, it's a cumulative effect of everything which gives an idea of the general progression of spring rather than any one discrete species, even other fungi, IMO. It would be nice to tie it into one thing or just a couple, but that's never worked for me.

I agree. Didnt think about that and how I was trying to pigeon hole my mindset. I found the first dandelion here today actually. Some shrubs are starting to bloom. Found a few purple flowers I cant identify. Things are coming to life.

Slowly waiting for any updates. Found that website. Says the past 5 day average in my area has been 42 which has gone up an average of 2 degrees every 3 days. If this average continues it wont be long until its above 55 for an extended period of time.

That means, if all things remain the same with temps slowly going up daily and soil temps going up we are looking at 21 days for temps to hit 55 and stay there.
I'm saying it takes 10-14 days for pins to form and bloom after temps remain consistently above 50 in the ground. Looking at between the 7th of April and Easter sunday.
Seems like totally flawless logic. What could go wrong!
