How do You Dry Correctly?
    #26525749 - 03/09/20 04:03 PM (3 years, 11 months ago)

So I’ve read a whole lot of mixed reviews on the drying process.  Right now, I’m fan drying but I know that won’t get them cracker dry, as there is still humidity in the room.  So a couple questions:

1. Do mushrooms lose potency if they are dried?
2. is the oven a bad idea?
3. I think I’m gonna get a dehydrator, eff it.
That’s not exactly a question..,,

Anyway, I’m interested to hear how you guys do it, as I’m sure many of you have really dialed it in.

1. No
2. You could use the oven, but you want circulating air.
3. Dehydrator is the way to go. Makes it easier.

Drying is the only real way to store psilocybin-containing mushrooms. You first dry, then keep in airtight storage with desiccator in the freezer.

If you could freeze-dry, it would be ideal, but not many people have access to this possibility. You could just pre-dry in front of fan, maybe in a wind-tunnel type of set up, or you can use a dehydrator. Oven could work I suppose but prob not ideal to use much heat, also you need air circulation.

After that you can put in airtight container with some calcium chloride to keep them cracker-dry in the freezer.

Generally I just set them up spread out on a table on top of tissue paper with fan blowing for a day, then into a tupperware that has some calcium chloride in the bottom and something to separate it from the mushrooms on top (I use a tupperware that has a "net", not sure what its called, something like this, plus some tissue paper on top and then the mushrooms). Then I put it in the freezer and have kept it there for 4+ years still as active as day 1.

I see no reason to freeze them. They'll last over 3 years at room temp. Just cracker dry stored in air tight jar

Is there any difference if I cut the big ones top to bottom, with the fiber before putting them in the dehydrator? I cannot really tell if there is any difference in potency but they dry quicker.
Temperaturewise is 70°C(158F) really just as good as 40°(104F)?

From what I understand, (thanks to knowledge from Bod and Mushboy)Exposure to air is more of a concern than heat is. People make shroom tea with no potency loss and boiling water is a lot hotter than a dehydrator. Crank that shit up and get those boys cracker dry. :awesome:

My dehydrator has three settings, 45°C, 65°C and 90°C. I dry them for 24 hours at 65°C. I haven't found the need to split up fatties, even really big ones with >120g got cracker dry in 24 hours in there.

So I got a dehydrator.  I guess it has one setting because when I plug it in it just turns on and goes.  No power button or adjustments.

Anyway, what do you guys recommend for long-term storage? I understand it needs to be in desiccant but what works best for you? I have some Epsom salt but not sure if it’s best.

That’s how mine is too.

After they’re dry I put them in half gallon mason jars with desiccant packs.

Sometimes in a bag also with desiccant and then in the jar to keep batches separate.

I got a bag of a few hundred on amazon for a few bucks. Plus you can throw them in the dehydrator and they’re good as new.
