Flu does so by infecting about 100 million Americans.

COVID, being 3-5x more contagious, if it were to infect 100 million Americans, 20 million Americans would need hospital care which they cannot, and because of this, about 5 million people would die. That's a whole holocaust, in 1 year, in 1 country.

Dear Shroomerites,

now that we're facing this epidemic, some of us more acutely aware than others, I've taken to writing a mail to my closest ones wherein I forgive them their trespasses, however real or imagined, wish them all that is good and show them my appreciation, in case something happens to any one of us.

I like to extend this, here, to the Shroomery.

Let bygones be bygones, let us focus on the good people we are and the good we can do for one another, and not be lost in negativity toward each other, in the knowledge that our identities are an unavoidable and Eternal consequence of the laws and constants of the Universe. That which is engraved in the essence of our Universe, death can never erase.

I love you all, very much.

Take good care out there, 2020 and perhaps 2021 will be quite a ride for us all, those who will see 2022 and those who won't.

500 Americans infected thus far. Still something 3.5k total deaths world wide.

It just isn't that bad. The news agencies sure are making a profit on it though.

You draw your conclusion from just two numbers. Also, I'm pretty sure we don't know how many deaths there really are in China.

And deaths isn't the only problem with the virus. Exponential growth which we see now and the fact that around 5-10percent of the infected will need serious hospital care is the problem.

Where's the problem? You're speculating using some made up stuff and one number.

I would recommend these two videos that have been already shared in this thread:

Dr. John Campbell overview of the virus (new video every day):

About exponential growth:

Watch these two videos and tell me that the virus isn't alarming and that we should forget about it because it's just the media making free money.

Oh boy, let's head over to Youtube where you get to pick and choose evidence to please whatever point we are trying to make. Let me pull up my journal of youtube scientists and check for successful peer review, oh wait, that doesn't exist.

I get that it's a serious concern. But where's the beef? Maybe it's yet to come, maybe the news media are cashing in hard. It's probably a bit of both. As we already know, a lot of the quarantine measures have produced negative effects, actually boosting the number of cases. So the numbers could actually be artificially high as a result.

Personally, I am going to put the bread in the oven, maybe watch a few episodes of American Dad, and just relax a bit. Buying more toilet paper and Purell isn't going to do shit.

The more we prevent stuff like this from running its course- aren't we weakening humanity in the long run?

It reminds me of a crop, pest, pesticide situation.

A crop is being fed on by a pest. A pesticide is sprayed and most of the pests die except the ones that have some sort of characteristic that keeps them alive. Maybe an unusually thick shell or something. So then all the bugs with unusually thick shells mate and pass on that trait to the next generations.

So the next time the pesticide is used, it isn't as effective. The species survives and adapts.

In this case, humans are the equivalent to the pest. The virus the pesticide. If we succeed in walling these incidences of disease off, are humans going to be weakened as a species in the long run while these diseases continue to evolve and get worse? -because we aren't going through the natural herd thinning events of natural selection?

Not saying we shouldn't do anything... just thinking about possible repercussions of interfering with nature.

Edit- heard/herd

The stock and bond market doesn't think it's hype. Will you believe money managers than run trillions of dollars with the smartest people in the world? Or you want to just shit on people to sound cool?

It isn't just a flu. It's the industries that a flu can shut down, it's a statistically significant mark on unemployment numbers, production, energy markets. It's the fracking industry in the USA largely going bankrupt. It's a black swan event that begets more black swan events.

I don't think we are doing a particularly good job of preventing it from spreading. Note the increasing spread of it.

It seems that if you aren't elderly or very young you stand a pretty good chance of surviving it. And if you get good care then that increases again.

So where are we? Less than 4k deaths thus far, this thread is a 45 days old. That's 77 deaths per day.

Again, where's the beef?

Who cares what the stock and bond market thinks? They are both based entirely on human emotion, science be damned. It's why so many people lose their ass there.

I do believe that you are correct when you called it a black swan event, lots of people are rationalizing this when it's pretty silly.

Why do people here still compare this to a common flu?
How many deaths do you guys thnk the flu had caused when it had existed globally for 3 months?

Idiocracy engage.

Speculating on Things We Don't Understand 2020 [Re: Asante]
    #26525476 - 03/09/20 01:09 PM (3 years, 11 months ago)

Global flu definitely has killed more because it's truly global. Covid, while having instances on much of the globe, is pretty rare still.

We will have to wait and see what happens with Covid, it's all speculation until it gets worse.

No, we should not wait, we should fight this in every possible way, like China did. Only then do we get 80.000 cases, and not 80,000,000

Its not speculation, every country where it wasn't fully quarantined got infections gorowing exponentially at a frightening rate until aggressive quarantine was achieved.

Its the pattern of all contagious disease, nothing speculative about it.

I'm thinking the USA government is going to announce a bunch of fiscal measures in the next 24 hours. I closed out a bunch of short positions, but I'm keeping all my gold.

The flu has had thousands of years to mutate to be able to kill and became more and more deadly. Not only that but we don't spend 10s of billions of $ fighting the flu and quarantining and giving people free treatments. COVID 19 appeared in fucking Januarary, if we become complacent because right now this brand new disease isn't killing as many people % wise we WILL have a much more terrifying disease very soon and when it does that infection/transmission rate will become much too overwhelming. People that go around touting a comparison to the flu and that aren't worried at all because Trumpy Trump told them so are the same people that will pose the most risk in making sure the doesn't kill as many or more people then the flu.

Says you, meanwhile all health officials are saying, "yeah it seems to be tough when you catch it, but most are surviving."

Meanwhile the news agencies are saying, "it's super duper scary and you should watch our news!"

Then there's you, "let me believe the media's scary stories."

For anybody who doesn't want to live in the land of make believe, check out this tool supplied by Johns Hopkins to watch Covid 19 progress. As of now, recoveries are out pacing new confirmed cases.
